For many hours it shone upon us And for four brief moments Its golden radiance was dazzling. As it melts into the horizon We think of the darkness that is ahead, And of the glow that is gone, And we recall How very like the rays of the sun Were the warm friendships which thrived in its brilliance We are thankful to those Who helped to brush away the clouds And make our days bright. O, sinking sun, do not forget us As you go on your way To so light the lives of others- For we are the Future, We are builders of bridges, The healers of the suffering, The patrons of peace. You have added energy to our youth, And with these we shall make Each stumbling block a stepping stone On our highway of Success. Into the west sinks the setting sun, and we For this day is gone forever. For a brief moment We shiver there in the darkness, Then, turning our back on the past, We look to the east, And find the horizon aglow With approaching day. And we rejoice! For we know That, hereafter, no matter How deep or how final The setting of the sun, By merely turning around, We shall End the glory Of a new day dawning. 8 lk, ZU66 P SENIOR H OMER OOM TEACHERS MISS MCNALLY, MISS XVOLOHAN, MISS KAPP H omeroom Teachers '1'o you . . . our homeroom tezuthers, we, the Class ol' l955, wish Lo express our sincere appreciation lor your guiclzmce throughout our high school career. The first day of high school to us was one of amazement and bewilderment. We were amazed that the Seniors were not waiting at the doors for us, and we were bewildered by all of the confusing regulations which were laid down to us. We were assigned to different homerooms. The teachers of these rooms were Miss Wolohan, Miss Kapp, and Miss McNally. At first we thought fit quite impossible to change classes in a three minute period of time, but we soon learned that it was, and HAD to be possible. Upon meeting these teachers we were convinced that high school was going to be quite tough on us. As the years progressed though, we realized just how wonderful these teachers were to us. Our class was the guest of the Freshman Reception which followed our initiation period. The Senior's skit was enjoyed by all. A few Frosh tried out some dance steps, but most of us remained on the shy side and clung to the nearest wall. As Frosh, we were allowed few activities although our cheerleadinvg squad and our basketball teams did prove successful. Those of us who were musically minded went to State Competition and many of us came home with A ratings. As proud Sophomores, we were allowed to organize. Our officers were: President, Robert Bissell, Vice-President, Ashley Johnsong Sec- retary, Sandy Bonlak, and Treasurer, Ben Petrone. Many of the girls joined Theta. Sandy Liljeholm was the only member of our class in an office of Student Council. Joe Akins, Bob Bissell, and Sal Scatta- reggia represented us on the varsity basketball team. A bake sale and a hayride increased our treasury, which at the time was nil. Besides financial help, they were enjoyed by all. Our Junior Class officers were: Ben Petrone as President, Sal Scattareggia as Vice-President, Ann Wheeler as Secretary, and Bernie 26 Stock as Treasurer. Now we were upperclassmen and able to handle our problems most successfully. Finally came our Junior Prom, a day and night which we had looked forward to for three years. The Prom was a big success, and the girl with the wonderful personality was our Queen. This was none other than Miss Virginia Jackson. Helen Carlotti, the 1953 Queen, crowned Ginny, The court consisted of: Sandra Liljeholm, Audrey Perrotte, Ann Wheeler, Joanne Thorpe, and Sandra Bonlak. Now we were finally in our Senior year in this high school, and immediately class officers were elected to head our class. The elections were as follows: President, Joseph Smith, who was quite capable of handling any situation that would ariseg Vice-President, Charles Brewer, a reliable person, Secretary, Arlene Monington, who kept our records in tip-top order, and last but not least, our Treasurer, Kathy Austin. We finally had our turn to initiate the Freshmen. I don't believe we were too harsh on them. After the initiation we entertained them with the Freshman Recption which included a short skit, and a few musical numbers. Our largest and most important project was the Yearbook entitled Crest and Shield. We worked diligently and the results were certainly proved profitable. We are certainly proud of our book, which is the first of its kind at VRHS and we will cherish it for years to come. This book is probably the crowning achievement of -the Class of 1955. To all who made it possible our gratitude can never be fully expressed. To close our Senior year we had our traditional Senior Ball which was held at the DeWitt Clinton in the Crystal Room. By this time we were more advanced in the art of dancing, and we had a most enjoyable evening. Johnny Costas' Band supplied the music. As we now look back upon our four years here at VRHS, we realize that we will never return for another year. This is it. What we have accomplished will stand and what we have left undone will remain that way also. We would like to extend to Mr. jordan and our homeroom teachers a special vote of thanks for the wonderful coopera- tion and guidance they have given to us. Without their help our time spent here would not have been -as pleasant as it has been. 27 CLASS PROPHECY THE RAM NE WS-1 965 By ACE REPORTERS P RALPH ALTON AND ARLENE MONINGTON The Headlines Read: The President of the United States has just appointed William Robinson as our Foreign Minister to Turkey, also today in Washing- ton, Senator Richard Kane was appointed chairman of the House Un- American Activities Committee to censor Senator McCarthy who is still on the national scene. Kathy Austin, Janet Reid and Sara Mulyca have just started secretarial work at the U.N., while Joyce Kraus began work as the French interpreter there. Flipping over the page, we find that Carolyn Boomhower Hew to New York, as she was elected the 'KOutstanding Girl Scout Leader in the United States. This trip seemed to be a VRHS reunion as Dave Turner was the pilot, Arthur Heck, co-pilot, and Audrey Perrotte, hostess. On the return trip, Ginny Jackson, who is a head nurse at Bellevue Hospital, was returning to Rensselaer for a short visit. Pat Bruce and Irene Massara, number one American models, boarded the plane in New York, as they had just come from a Dior fashion show in Paris. On the next page there is a feature story about four local Van Rensselaer graduates who have justqventured into the hat designing business. With fashions better than those of Dache's, Caryl Gray, Barbara Mallory, and Nancy Pratt, have really put out some outstand- ing originals. On this page there is also an advertisement to join a Home Economics school, owned and operated by Barbara Leake and Rose Shepard. Page four tells us that A. F. of L. President, Joseph Smith has resolved to give higher pay and better conditions on the New York waterfront. On Wall Street, the thriving Thorpe Electrical Company, with Joanne Thorpe as Vice-President, has become a nationally known business and the stocks are very good. Also, on this page, we see that Dick Fahey and Bob Walsh have finally obtained their desired posi- tions as floor walkers in the telephone booths located in Union Station. On this page, there is an article telling that David Campbell, Bruce 28 Ludlum, Thomas Nichols and Tony Nardacci have reenlisted in the U.S. Navy. FLASH . . . Ben Petrone, the Daniel Boone of 1965 has just returned from a trip to Africa after 'big game for the K and Y Circus fstanding for Bob Kelly and William Youngj. While he was in Africa, Ben met his former classmate, Bill Spence, who is a mission- ary there. Turning to the last page of Section I, we see a feature health article by Edward Wheeler, MD. Pat Crysel has her horoscope column and the editorial is written by Charlotte Miers. She gives us other articles when she is not en'gaged in deep thought on her new book The Weakness of Negative Thinking. In Section II, the first page everyone turns to is the Sports page. A new pro basketball team with Sandy Liljeholm as manager has been formed with Sal Butch Scattareggia, Captain. Other members of the team are: Bob All American Bissell, Uncle Buck McGovern, Joe the Lawyer Akins, and Charles Crummy Cook. Further down on this page we find that Ron Rosenthal and Charles Brewer have just flown down to Florida to begin spring training with the New York Yankees. W On the theatrical page we find that Miriam Sanderson made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera House. Ruth Anne Aleschus, and William Turnbull will play an organ duet with the Boston Sym- phony. Bernie Stock, with his ten piece band, flew to New York at the request of the manager of the Roosevelt Hotel. He will be taking over Guy Lombardo's place for the year. Turning to the Classified Section we see an advertisement stating, This is Handy Sandy Bonlak announcing the opening of my art school. Further down the column there is one ad for the Valerie Burns Dance Studio. There is also one for used cars, Bruce Nichols and Jock McElwain are partners in this business. In the next column the S.G.S. School of Driver Training is offering classes at decreased ratesg Joyce Simons, Ann Grogan and Nancy Smith are the teachers here. Frances Tagliento has just opened a Super Market at the corner of State and Pearl Streets. She is offering some very good buys this first week. The former Joan Fleet has an advertisement stating that she will help any school get started with a yearbook. The C. N., Coleman and Niven Finance Corporation will loan money to any 1955 V.R. graduate wishing to attend the 10th reunion of the Class of 1955. Charles Norton will do better than thatg he'll drive you there. Unable to attend the VRHS 10th Reunion are Richie Sprague and Dave Curtis because their touring Bowling Exhibition is takinlg them far away from Rensselaer. Ann Wheeler, Secretary of the Bowl- ing Congress, and their official scorekeeper, will also be unavailable. 29 C L A S S W I L L By JoYcE KRAUS AND WILLIAM SPENCE To Mr. MacFarland and Mr. Jordan, we wish to express our sin- cere appreciation for their patience and understanding during these past four years.
