All four RCHS classes were represented and both casts received audience acclaim. The drama club sponsored a writing competition in the spring, supported the choral boosters’ musical and organized its troupe for a future in the spotlights. 8 Front: Missy Prouty, Sherrie Hall, Adam Vanderweilen, John List, Peggy Karnes, Karen Jung, Kyler Laird, Lisa Lintner, Maia Kingman, Tracy Justice, Crystal Hawkes, Em- my Kreilkamp, Tonya Bums. They defeated the other five finalist teams from around the state. The Hoosier Spell Bowl is sponsored by a group of citizens concerned with promoting academic excellence. The format of the contest is slightly different from that of the normal spelling bee. Each team has ten members. The first member of each team sits at a desk on the gym floor. The emcee pro- nounces the words, gives them in a sentence, and pronounces them again. The contestant writes the eight words, then is replaced by the next member. -Genny Jones- 19 (J linos haos took on a new lustre during the 1986-87 school year. Now being published by Taylor Publishing Com- pany, the RCHS yearbook was eased in- to the computer age by way of a new IBM PC. Much of the book was entered onto a floppy disk and then sent to Dallas where the company’s typesetting and layout programs took over. The result was a more accurate and more contemporarily developed record of the school year. Many of the people are in the photo below and they represent the those who shoot, edit, crop, write and compose the elements that make the Chaos. As the computer grows in its uses in journalism, both the yearbook and the school newspaper will grow accordingly. The school newspaper has sought to come back during the 1986-87 school year with a sharp document published and transmitted by computer. With the help of a pc, the information can be stored, edited and then sent by phone to the publisher. As time moves on, more journalism students will com- municate with the masses with the aid of the electronic typewriter, its memory and peripherals like the modem and printer. As this happens, the Rensselaerien staff will stand ready to change with the times. Mass com- munications students (like Steffany Smith at left) spend many hours putting the finishing touches on RCHS publications. The combination of good humor and a large dash of country romance held the breaths of all ages that attended the production. The variety in the characters added that special glitter that makes a musical a success. The secret of the play’s success was the outstanding acting abilities of every participant, with characters varying from shy to outspoken. The RCHS student thespians played each of their characters to the hilt, enabling our musical to be one of the high points of the school year. 40 SEVEN BROTHERS On the opposite page, Gideon Pontipee (portrayed by Greg Michael) is singing his opinion of love. Far left is Susie Lintner, Heather Louck, and “Father” Peggy Karns. They are singing for the protection of their daughters who are being kid- napped by the Pontipee brothers. The seniors observed the rookie writers, col- lected the information, and then transcribed what the children could not. It was an enjoyable half day for each of the classes, as they tried to follow the six year olds’ wandering trains of thought. The kids were “cute and forward” and the RCHS teams found the sojourn to elementaryland to be an en- joyable break. 45 Visiting Musi cal Talent Headlines RCHS Spring Convos Top photo: Peggy Karns accompanies visiting Metropolitan Opera singer Mark Doss with his varied pro- gram of fine music.
