RENSSELAER HIGH SCHOOL Rensselaer, Indiana Volume XXXIX CeNTEK or ACTIVITY Student life at Rensselaer High School is centered around the study hall. We gather here before school begins in the morning and during our noon-hour to talk over the latest in gossip, be withour favorite mem- ber of the opposite sex, and some- times even catchup on our studying. But as soon as the final bell rings, a cloak of silence falls over the study hall, and we resolve ourselves to the fate of preparing our daily classroom assignments. TABLE OF CONTENTS we plan ACTIVITIES ... I) WE DISCUSS SPORTS 29 WE MEET PEOPLE •••■ - tl NEWCOMER ' S DILEMMA COKES FOR THE THIRSTY It seemed as if the entire student body attended the All-School Party, which proved to be Rensselaer High School ' s most successful. After the recreation was over, we certainly appreciated the cokes and ice cream sandwiches served by the Student Council members. Our thanks go to them and their capable advisor, Mr. Calvin Beaman, for sponsoring this annual mixer. DIG THIS! We began this unforgettable night with a Grand March which thoroughly mingled us with our fellow students. We were then divided into four groups in order to proceed with the evening ' s schedule of activities. In the games and dances which followed all semblance of class disappeared as the green freshmen mixed with the high and mighty seniors. And when the party was all over, we were glad we had welcomed the freshmen in this manner. THE HONDO? The Jasper County Rural Youth lent a new touch to this year ' s party as they took charge of the evening ' s festivities. Not only did they provide for our en- tertainment with group games and dances, but they brought the pro- gram to a fitting close by exhibit- ing their own talents in the form of a skit and a square dance. They also deserve our thanks for the t important part they played in mak- ing the party a success. 4 Pimm, PRINCESSES, HD PARADES The judges had a difficult time choosing the best float in the parade. The D. C. E. ' s unique string of floats, pictured upper left, finally- won the first prize. Above is the Pep Club float and at the lower left is the F.H.A. float. Clouse Our homecoming was a memorable occasion. We ' ll never forget our lovely queen Joan Hansen, as she was crowned by Murray Key, vice-president of the senior class. Nor will we forget the rest of the pageantry of that night when the Bombers crushed Dyer before a huge crowd. S. Jensen, Sen. attendant; J. Hopkins; J. Hansen, Queen; B. Stevens; M. Key; D. ONE FOOT IN HEAVES” During our junior year we began to display our theatric talents by presenting One Foot in Heaven, a three act play by the Reverend William Spence. We spent weeks of diligent rehearsing under the di- rection of Mr. Robert Pabst before we finally presented the play, which portrayed the trials and tribulations of a Methodist minister ' s family in a small Iowa town, to an approving audience which packed the gym. , Dean, Felder, Wood, Walter, Foster, James, Miller. Carrol! H IKl ' iS THE FOOTLIGHTS Key, Houston, Carroll, Wood, Daugherty, Hansen, Kresel, Fiala. 00n TAKE MY PENNY” In our final year at RHS we again took to the stage. This time under the capable directing of Mr. C. T. Keller we presented a comedy, Don ' t Take My Penny by Anne Coulter Martens. Again a packed house saw us present the second hit play of our high school careers, which was about a teen age girl who wanted to go to Hollywood and her boy friends attempts to dis- courage her. BACK ROW: Williams, Key, Grant, Wood, Stevens, Schafer, Martin, B. Miller. FRONT ROW; P. Miller, Werre, Houston, Carroll, Kurtz, Fiala, Kerns, Daugherty, Hansen, Kresel. CANDLE LIGHT CANTATA MUSIC III MIRTH From the first note of Adeste Fidelis to the last sweet chord of Silent Night, our Christmas pro- gram was a tremendous success. Before a beautiful backdrop depic- ting an early 1900 Christmas, the chorus and band under the direc- tion of Mr. Mau presented an ex- citing program of Christmas mu- sic to a packed house. Special numbers by a flute quartet, and the Girl ' s Glee Club plus solos by Lula Mae Schultz, Chuck Tilton, and Sandra Lintner helped to maxe the evening a memorable one. TOP: Flute Quartet-Sue Kresler, Barbara Carroll, Anita Jensen, Dorothy Arnott. SIDE: Girls’ Glee Club. BOTTOM LEFT: Soloist-Chuck Tilton. NOT PICTURED-Gene Armold, Wayne Erickson, Warren Gratner, Clifford Hall, Eldon Kelley, Charles Torbet, Russell Willets. Those of us who live in the country and come to school on the busses certainly appreciate our bus drivers. No matter how bad the weather, they faith- fully carry us to school in the morning and return us safely to our homes at night. SOUP’S Oil! (COOKS): Mrs. Earl Long, Mrs. Max Pullin, Mrs. Wm. Staddon, Mrs. Virgil Daniels, Mrs. Harry Gallagher. When we eat in the school cafeteria, we find home cooking just like mom ' s. Our cooks work hard to prepare one square meal a day for those of us who find it inconvenient to eat lunch at home, and we certainly owe our thanks to them. MAIYTEYAME MEN (JANITORS): Freeman Norris, Edward Mitch- ell. NOT PICTURED-Lloyd Linback, Earnest Richards. The entire student body values the work our four high school jan- itors do. They have a man- size job in keeping the school build- ings in tip-top repair and we sometimes wonder how they can be so pleasant about doing it. 10 TOP ROW: Handley, E. Our marching band performed at every home football game, and half of us alternated entertaining at the home basketball games. In October we participated along with 82 other Hoosier bands in Purdue ' s High School Day. In mid- December we collaborated with the chorus in a memorable Christmas program. When spring rolled around, we joined with the four other county bands to present the County Music Festival. A few weeks later we followed with our own Spring Festival. We closed our year with the band picnic sponsored by the Band Mothers. Nesius. FIFTH ROW: Martin, Schaden, D. Miller, Fitch, Wuerthner, Rishling, Randle, Robinson, Lakin, Jackson, D. B. Our major ap- pearances of the year were in the annual Christmas program and the Spring festival. Part of us were also chosen to participate in the Purdue Chorus, The Variety Show, and var- ious other special activities throughout the school year. From the regular chorus a group of girls is chosen by Mr. Mau for the Girl ' s Glee Club. During the year we hold a number of social occasions which all enjoy, the Foot- ball Supper, Dads ' Supper, Sunshine Dance, and Mothers ' Day Tea. But most of our time is spent helping others by doing such things as assisting in the annual polio drive, sending wreaths to the Jasper County Hospital at Christmas, helping to support Riley Hospital in Indianapolis, and sending packages to Westville. At Thanksgiving we presented our annual service in the Christian Church. Soon after- wards we were busy collecting clothes for the Save the Children Foundation. Before Christmas we distributed food baskets to the needy of Jasper County. When the win- ter snows melted and spring rolled around, we donned our work clothes and proceed- ed with our annual clean-up of the city. Our year in Hi-Y was brought to a perfect close with our annual banquet.
