Text from Pages 1 - 64 of the 1954 volume:

THIS IS OURS! This is Rensselaer High School more than just one of the 7 80 high schools in Indiana to 378 students, more to its students than a brick building partly covered with ivy, more to its students than meets the eye. This is ours. Filled with students and teachers five days a week, it offers us life- -a life of our own, different to each of us in our individual way. From these walls come an education- -an education that will be looked back upon as one of our most prized possessions. The classes lead to friendships among fellow students and between students and teachers as well. From these friendships develop clubs, organizations, and after class get togethers. Then the path of harmony broadens and together we fight for and sing the praises of old R.H.S. in our sports program. This loyalty has been developed over a period of four years; and at the end of that time, we seniors will leave this Rensselaer High School and THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES. TABLE or CONTENTS PEOPLE 9 ACTIVITIES 31 SPORTS 49 THEY MADE THE FUN All the careful planning of the Student Council members took on new significance as four ministers led us in group games. Maybe we ' ll forget what games we played and the refreshments we ate, but not one of us will forget the fun we had. We owe our thanks to Mr. Beaman, to the council members, and to Rev. Ward, Presbyte- rian Church; Rev. Fitch, Christian Church; Rev. Fleetwood, Nazarene Church; and Rev. Bosse, Methodist Church. MINISTERS AWARD PRIZES Robert Ward, Joe Fitch, C. T. Fleet- wood, Carl Bosse SHOELESS STUDENTS SLIDE ' N SMILE The night of the ALL SCHOOL PARTY turned out to be a socking success as everyone joined in the fun. Even the seniors took off their shoes and placed them right beside those of the freshmen. Can you imagine a junior rolling a potato across the floor? Or a sophomore boy asking a senior girl to dance? This was just a small part of the fun that lasted all evening and the beginning of the friendly spirit that lasted all year between the classes. GRAB A SHOE--FIND YOUR PARTNER DIG THOSE CRAZY KIDS! BUTTON B UT TON- - WHO ' S GOT THE BUTTON? 4 THIS IS SANTA ' S WORKSHOP OUR CHRISTMAS PROGRAM ' Twas three nights before Christmas When all through the gym, Not a chair was empty And more were carried in. The band started to play And when it was through. The chorus began to sing And not a person did move. There were greetings and solos And then by candlelight Everyone hushed to hear The chorus and Silent Night. The evening was perfect The music was grand And to Mau and his musicians We all gave a hand. MR. MAU, FROSTY, AND JULIEN BLACKERBY We ' ll remember our 1953 Homecoming! It was a big day for everyone. Friday afternoon we formed a parade of the band, floats, the queen and her attendants and a lot of enthusiastic students. We marched downtown to the courthouse square to cheer our football men to victory. And then came the game ! The floats circled the football field and it wasn ' t long before everyone could spot the smiling Speech Club members. With their chef hats and big kettle, they cooked those Devils and won first prize. EVERYBODY EOVES A PARADE 6 I CROWN YOU QUEEN OF THE RENSSELAER 1953 HOMECOMING Michael Grant, Student Council President; Harold Shuster, Senior President; Jo Hite, Queen; Attendants: Beverly Peacock, Judy Newcome, Sandra Jensen, Gayla Fleming. Daring the crowning of the queen, the band formed a jeweled crown with balloons and began their show with Ain ' t She Sweet? At times it seemed as if the cheer- leaders and the kids were working as hard as the team, but we were all proud of our hoarse voices. And we ' re sure that it was worth it, for we beat Lowell 41-14. All too soon the game was over, but the Homecoming Dance moved into the spot- light. What a wonderful, wonderful day! VARSITY CHEERLEADERS: Suzy Phegley, Jane Kurtz, Jean Pullin 7 II.C.E Bill Wilcox .... President Delbert Hickman. Vice -President Elaine Moore Secretary-Treasurer GEORGIANN KNOUFF CONVERSES WITH PATIENT SUCCESS SHINES ON SIXTEEN It ' s new! It ' s RHS ' s latest addition clubwise! Nine boys and six girls put their heads together with Mr. Patterson and came up with a new idea- -or maybe we just applied an age-old one. Anyway, we combined work and pleasure into the D. C. E. Club--that ' s short for Diversified Cooperative Education. A hayride and weiner roast led our parade of activities, and the boys visited the Studebaker Corporation at South Bend. Of course, there was work too-in class and on the job. We go to school only one-half day, but when the bell rings at 3:30, we stay on the job. There were just lots of occupational opportunities — auto mechanics, radio and TV, plumbing, nursing, retail selling, bookkeeping plus lots of book learnin 1 . Each of us study materials that apply directly to our job, and together we discuss taxes, unions, and incomes. We ' re sure that work and pleasure combined can be a success. 8 LEE MILLER CHECKS SHOE STOCK MR. FIXIT - -DEAN McELFRESH PEOPLE WE LIVE FOR THESE MOMENTS The minutes before school begins each morning, the extra time during our noon hour and a minute betv een classes finds us together chewing the fat in the study- hall. This has come to be the most popular meeting place for students and their friends at Rensselaer High. All of these minutes spent in discussing everything from math problems to latest dates make up a memorable part of THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES. THEY HELP BUILD OUR SCHOOL From the big task of outlining our school policy to the small but important job of typing daily bulletins, we depend upon our school administrative personnel. Whether it be planning the annual school program or personal counseling, they are always willing to help us. For all their extra hours of work and effort, we owe them our thanks. Vice-President THIS IS HIGH SCHOOL AS WE LIVED IT Four years ago 79 of us entered as wide-eyed strangers who anticipated, hoped, and even dared to dream a little. All the newness gleamed on our brightly scrubbed faces as we eagerly sought our classrooms. The following September we happily came back to school and tried to impress upon the new freshmen that we were part of the scenery. We started to work imme- diately by selling tickets to the intra- squad basketball game. The proceeds went for a new scoreboard. Boy, were we proud of that! A few months later we proudly displayed our sharp black class sweaters with an outstanding white 54 on the sleeve. We played host to the students New Years Eve with lots of music, confetti, food, and fun. Like all juniors, we eagerly waited for our class rings, and like all the classes before us, we were sure that we had selected the prettiest. (Well, didn ' t we?) We combined our acting talent and produced a smashing hit of a class play, Every- thing Happens To Us. It wasn ' t long after that until Prom Time and we began to display our artistic talent. We were all proud of our Wonder- land and the blue-eyed blonde, Alice, which created a perfect setting for our theme, Through The Looking Glass. The next fall we all came back as sophis- ticated seniors and began to publish the CHAOS. That was work that was carried on throughout the year, but we were kept extra busy in be- tween times. First was the Homecoming Dance, and then we all spruced up to have our individual class pictures taken. What fun it was to exchange pictures with our classmates. As soon as we started fitting robes for graduation, we realized that the end of our high school days was near and that we had spent a part of THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES. 14 OUR SPONSORS- -MRS. WE LOOK FORWARD TO OUR DANCES Our acquaintances became our friends at club meetings and while working on committee projects. Each organization was outstanding for a particular event, but we all took our turn at sponsoring dances. These various dances changed our gym many times --from a Sadie Hawkins theme to the annual much awaited Sunshine Dance. IT LOOKS INTERESTING Early in November we jumped into a school bus and headed for the Gary Steel Mills. How amazed we were to learn on what a large scale the mills operate. We especially enjoyed the various movies on drafting and on metal and wood lathe operations which we watched at our meetings. At the Spring Ex- hibit we proudly displayed all our hours of work in the forms of desks, cedar chests, dressers, and lamps. TOP ROW: Critser, Davisson, Pass, Tullis, Hopkins, Caldwell, Law- son. In March, 200 high school musicians joined with us in presenting the County Music Featival. Immediately we began rehearsing for our own annual Spring Festival. VVe were real proud of our size which consisted of 146 members and were all set to prove quantity can be quality. Our first public appearance was our annual Christmas program. One of our specialties was singing The Night Before Christmas while other members of the chorus portrayed the song. And, of course, we ended it with our traditional singing of Silent Night while holding lighted candles. Besides preparing for the County Music Festival and our own Spring Festival, we were always busy with extras, such as the Variety Show, Purdue Sing, and community activities. From the chorus, the voices of thirty-five music maids were chosen and developed into the Glee Club. All of those after-school practices proved their worth as we participated with the regular chorus at the music programs.
