Our first year passed. The second found us anchored safely in the port of R. H. S. The faculty ordered us to keep alert. lm- patiently and anxiously we passed the critical third year period. Taut with excite- ment We became Seniors. Had not this been our destination? Keith Nesbitt, our pilot, Miss Bartley and Mr. Mohr, our co-commanders fired our imaginations with the desire to work. We received new dreams for our fancies, new fields for our energyenew worlds to con- quer. The record of our conquest was emblazoned with such heroic names as Avalyn Lane, William Ramey, Doris Miller, Patty Bausman, lacqueline Dean, Blaine Merriman, Dorothy Robinson and Ruth Miller. And so, four years after we had entered high school we were graduated, proudly bearing our mark of success. We were contented that in our conquest we were prepared now to seek a new world, face to face. NfW WHHIHS li HHNUIHHH Maurice Adams F. P. The best prom in the history of the Rensselaer High School was held under the supervision of Mrs. Martin, Mr. Holt, Boyd Page, Iohn Reeve, and Eileen Merriman. Recently Iohn Reeve had been elected State Secretary of Hi-Y. Thus great honor had been brought to R. H. S. Seventy-two Iuniors had reached the third step of their high school career. They were attaining their goals, slowly but surely. Another success ot the year was the class play presented by the Iuniors. There were great storms of applause for this delightful performance. ln the Who's Who ot athletes I have recorded such names as Bowman, Lewis, Ford, Dawson, Marlin, Babcock, Shelby, Kryder, Iordan, and Moore. Much ot our education has already passed, but we continue in our struggle to reach for the stars. Marjorie Phares, Vice Pres., Ralph Smith, Pres., Mr. Dnvisson, Miss Russell, Marie Mtxrtin, Ser, No longer were we considered the babies of the school. We had become so habituated to R. H. S. and so big that people began noticing us. We had literally fought our way up the first year. Under the tender guidance of our sponsores, Miss Russell and Mr. Davisson, and our officers we earned the right to be recognized as essentials in the school system. Now and then, of course, a few childish tactics crept out when we harassed the new freshmen in a friendly way. Soon, however, our energies were turned to more illus- trious pursuits. Football occupied the attention of such athletes as Green, Bahler, Putts, York, Battleday, Dawson, and Kryder. We sold victory badges to swell our treasury. Basketball suddenly loomed up as the chief diversion of the day. lt was delightful to watch Hancock, Putts, Cleaveland, Over- ton, Srnith, Green, Bahler, Gates, and McColly uphold the honor of the Baby Bombers. They symbolized our motto Possunt Qui Putant Posse. When the story begins, we find forty freshmen girls being initiated at a beautiful candle- light ceremony. At the Methodist Church they make their pledge to make the object of my life helpfulness and kindess to others. As the story unfolds, action begins with the industrious group of Sunshiners conducting an all-school hobby contest, distributing Thanksgiving baskets, giving a Christmas party for underprivileged children, and sponsoring an all-school amateur contest. Among the educational programs for the society was the Lincoln Day observation featuring Mrs. Harold Baker of Camden, who talked on the subject of With Malice Toward None. The Reverend Marshon DePoister also appeared on a program, the topic of his interesting address being Words Some of the outstanding incidents were the District Convention at Winamac, and the gala dance ushering in Spring on March 13. The climax came when a large delegation of Sun- shiners, accompanied by Miss Kresler, sponsor, journeyed to Battleground for the State Convention on April l8. Although each chapter is sketched upon a similar framework, every one brings forth several new ideas and stresses others which had not been fully developed. The framework is the church and its ideals. This book's primary purpose is to keep these ever before the readers tmembersl, and to furnish the guidance and stimulus needed to attain these ideals. The principal authors, the club officers, collaborated with the patron and sponsor of the work, William Holt, in introducing a few innovations. Night meetings were inaugurated and proved to be a success: one of the authors, lohn Reeve, was elected secretary of the state Hi-Yg and the club furnished cold drinks at all athletic events. Some of the other features were the revising of the club constitution, the annual banquet and dance, send, ing a delegation to the state conference, and the satisfaction of seeing former members of the club go into the armed forces of Uncle Sam or into Vital posts in defense industries. The officers this year were as follows: president, Keith Nesbitt: vice president, William Rameyy secretary, Hilton Bowmany treasurer, Glen Hancock. These boys worked hard to make their particular chapter a masterpiece, and if they were successful, it will, in time, become evident. As usual, the athletic teams were composed mainly of Hi-Y members, and the sportsmanship displayed was at all times very commendable. And so another chapter has been written, only time can furnish the material for another, Top row, left to right: Branaman, Cain, Stath, Halstead, England, Gerbzacht, Powers, Sanders, Erb, P. Ill Ill BRE ll Alll E THE DOLLY MADISON CLUB Turning the pages of this interesting and colorful book, we find President Doris Miller, assisted by Dorothy Phegley, Ruth Miller, and Bernice Simpson, skillfully guiding the Dolly Madison girls through an eventful year. Besides serving a series of six suppers to the Booster Club, a banquet for the lasper County T. B. Association, a luncheon to ninety Farm Loan Association people, and lunches to the basketball boys, they have accommodated the Literary Society by modeling costumes of various countries at a style review. Their Christmas dance proved a big success. With the proceeds from the various activities, these eighty-five girls have been able to pur- chase shears, dishes, silver and cooking ware for the Home Economics Department. Educational features within the club were the etiquette and talent programs. Miss Kresler spoke on several occasions about Europe as she saw it in l94O. ln the last chapter, Miss Russell and her homemakers begin to relax after a year of high achievement. A , . The programs for the year were built upon the idea of occupations. Several Rotarians ap- peared on our programs and discussed for us their professions. From these discussions the Craftsmen gained a general idea of advantages and disadvantages of several different vocations. The Craftsmen sponsored a singing assembly. They felt the need for more community singing. With the help of Mr. Shadley and Miss Sharp the idea turned out to be a huge success. As a defense project our club members sponsored a paper collecting campaign. The city assisted our club and enlarged our collection with the paper gathered from the business district. Many tons of paper were collected and sold, and the project proved to be most successful. Back row, lett to right: Iohnson, E. Murray, Smith, Nagel, Thompson, T. Murray. The story is built around two young co-editors of a thriving newspaper, Avalyn Lane and laclcie Dean. Spring and summer had passed into the harvest season and hot autumn. We laid aside our ploughs and resumed our school work under the guidance of farmer Bundy. Not being content with our regular routine affairs, we assisted in promoting the Iasper County Corn Show. The local chapter conducted a public speaking contest. Marvin Luers and Ierry Kruger were the winners who participated in the district meet. On April 3, 4, 5, two of our delegates went to the State Congress at LaFayette. Hearing about the need of individual participation in our defense program, we sponsored defense jobs for each F.F.A. member. Three of our boys were candidates for the State Farmer. They were Charles Stath, Glen Al- son, and Delos Waling. Robert Daniels had been one of the 1941 winners oi this award. Thus spring wore on again. The love for our land called us and we again drove our plows deeper and deeper into the good earth. 37 First row, left to riqht' Nesbitt N Hoover A Nu s S , , . , . s , pain, Scontlin, Daugherty, Hershmon, Saqe, Second row: Davisson, Bowman, Bahler, l. Imagine the adventurous times we experienced under the leadership of Ruth Miller, and her assistants, Patty Prouty, Marjorie Iones, and Ioan lacks, who kept track oi the financial books. Now it is like coming to the end ot a year's journey, and it has been thoroughly a pleasure trip. Because ot the fun we have had, we hate to leave our adventures of dart games, badminton, relays, and skating parties. If there is any more fun than leading a life for a year, roughing it in G.A.A. as We have done, it must be experienced by those in story books. -' '- P1-',,:s:i ' ' Standing, left to right: Hayes, Holmes, Hutt, Miss Rhodes, Johnson, Fleming, Dean, Nesbitt, Robinson, Schu- man, Bowman. The Cosmopolitan Club was organized because of a desire to further relations with our good neighbors to the south. Miss Cathcart consented to direct this club. lohn Reeve, as president, Elizabeth Davis- son, and Norma Hershman were chcsen to lay the foundation for future generations in the Cosmopolitan Club. The club sponsored the speaker for the Armistice Day program. She was Miss Gloria Fox, exchange student, from Mexico who was attending Purdue University. Another feature of their program was a Pan American Day convocation on April 14. Many interesting and educational meetings were held. At one meeting, moving pictures of Brazil and Mexico were shown. Articles coming from these two countries were on dis- play. Another outstanding meeting was one which featured Guatemala. Mrs. lames Chapman spoke on her trip to Guatemala and illustrated her talk with articles she brought from that country. A valuable Guatemalan stamp collection was on display at this meeting. The Cosmopolitan Club was given the task of compiling an honor roll of R. H. S. alumni and former students serving in any branch of the armed forces of the United States. We are trying to find out what our neighbors to the south eat, think, and propose to do what sort of men rule over them-whether they plan to play with us or with the foe now that the foe has appeared. That is what this club is striving to do. Ma, ' 9 ew L63 a, v - , .ki J, 44 M MN MX i Rl Y the schodboy The vokze o raMKes the ranks. 'lt lllt' BMISMAN ND HIS ll Itt SSHAHIIE S This biography of the great coach of B.H.S. is presented yearly by eleven stout hearted fel- lows that don't even know the meaning of the word fear. This year, however, Knute Bausman's squad had an oft season. Being up against some stiff competition, they lost six out of eight games. But that should matter. They have the heart, and every team has to have an oft season now and then. The first game with East Chicago was a let down. A last minute touchdown from the Chicago eleven took away the U to O tie from the Bombers. Michigan City capped the next game while the Bombers were not in the mood. The Bombers had a heavy fall also from Valpo. Lowell had our number that night and took us down the pea patch. Our first victim was Morocco, Whom we delightfully skinned. Our hopes were soon shattered, because the next game was with Crown Point, who turned the tables on us. The game with Wabash was a rip-snorter which added another game on our win list. But Monticello, in our last game, just wouldn't contribute another on to our Victory list. Eight of Knute's All Stars have played their last games for R.H.S.-Wood, Woodworth, Stath, I. Llntner, Schuman, Ames, Kruzan, and Eggleston. Delos Woodrmade his drives and bucks with plenty of force and his kicks brought no complaints. Keith Schuman gave his all on the and runs and passes which never missed. Ames was really on the ball, going through, the center and blocking. Kruzan had an, accurate eye for throwing that pill back and then tak- ing out a few foes. Woodworth, Stath, Llntner, Eggleston stopped our opponents and opened up many wide holes for the defense. ' - 1 7 Q The other fellows on the squad were Moore, A. Dawson, D. Dawson, D. Lintner, Battleday, Ford, Bowman, Lewis, and Putts. Knute expects great things of these boys next year, and he'1l get 'em. And of course Knute and his All'Rensselaeriens lived happily ever after. You could tell by a slight motion from one side of the bench to the other. He's upl He's down! The floor is almost worn through. The gun goes off just in time, cmd he doesn't have a breakdown. The Bombers this year had plenty of speed. They were absolutely devoid of height. 'Ihese midgets held their own, never once slacking down on the job. They went right to town. After some stiff competition which sometimes caused defeat, they went at the next game more fiercely. They played a fast brand of basketball, but they needed some height. That's all there was to it. Slim sees to it that his boys always know what they are doing. He deserves a lot of credit for his teachings. His teams always get better as the season shoots by. Nesbitt played center for the Bombers right in Wiles' footprints and did a good job. That streak? Oh, yes, that was Merriman dribbling down the floor. He's certainly a fast little for- ward. And Alson, tool He can really go in and fight for that ball. Babcock knows hislbeans about basketball and those one handed shots of his are simply divine. Dale Ames did his stuit for old R.H.S. Stath really caught on quick tor his first year. That basket? Well, Dukie didn't have anything else to do, so he thought he might as well get a couple more points. That Bowman really can handle the ball. The other boys on the team were Ford, Moore, Milton, Lewis.
