SHIP'S HISTORY USS RENSHAW DDE-499 The USS RENSHAW DDE-499, a destroyer of the Fletcher Class, was built by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company of Kearny, New Jersey. The keel was laid on 7 MAY I943 and RENSHAW was launched on I3 October I942. Commissioning took place in the yards of the builder on 5 December I942. ' The RENSHAW is the second Navy ship to be named for COMMANDER WILLIAM D. RENSHAW, United States Navy, who was born on II October I8I6 and was killed in battle on I January I863. After commissioning RENSHAW reported to the Pacific Fleet in the Spring of I943. Upon arrival RENSHAW took part in the Operations in the Solomons Islands Area, the beginning of actions that earned eight battle stars for the Luzon Operation, Occupation of New Oeogia, Treasury-Bougainville Landings, Bismarck Archipelago Operation, Capture and Occupation of Saipan and Guam, Capture and Occupation of Tinian, and one anti-submarine engagement. While in the Mindanao Sea, on QI February I945, RENSHAW was struck by a torpedo from an enemy submarine. The torpedo hit admidships and exploded, crippling the entire engineering plant and flooding all main spaces, kill- ing nineteen and iniuring twenty. RENSI-IAW was taken under tow to Leyte Gulf. During March temporary repairs were effected and RENSHAW proceeded to the United States for permanent repairs and overhaul. RENSHAW was decommissioned in February I947, and placed in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. During I949UMI950 RENSHAW was converted to an escort destroyer, a specialist in anti-submarine warfare. RENSHAW was recommissioned on I June I950 as the USS RENSHAW DDE-499, and shortly thereafter assigned to Pearl Harbor, T.H., as her home port. DUVIWQ the Korean Conflict RENSHAW served two tours of duty in the Far East area as an escort, patrol, search and rescue, and bombardment vessel. On one bombardment mission RENSHAW established a precedent by sinking a shore battery. A direct hit on a gun emplacement located on a cliff, sent it and its crew toppling into the sea. On II October I95I, RENSHAW was fired upon by enemy shore batteries and was hit by shell fragments, imme- dl0IelY VGIUVUIHQ the tire RENSHAW's gunners destroyed one gun emplacement and at least two of its crew. The RENSHAW has completed seven Wrrstern Pacific tours since refcommissioning, participating in anti-submarine, Seomli Gnd rescue, and SFATO Combined Fleet Operations
