They also es- tablish the polices which make the college a respon- sive part of the community vi hich it serves. Dr. Harry S. Braun leads the college toward the future. His efforts to guide the faculty, staff and students to new directions are resulting in swift educational advancements. ADMINISTRATION The Dean of Instruction works to insure a quality educational program and to foster unity among the president, faculty and students. Being Dean of Stu- dent Services involves overseeing counseling, regis- tration, financial aid and testing. The Business Man- ager is responsible for preparing the college ' s budget and maintaining a sound financial system of account- ing, purchasing and budgetary control. The Dean of Community Services helps instigate and develop all off-campus and on-campus evening classes according to the community ' s educational needs. The Dean of Vocational Technical Education is responsible for co- ordinating the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act agreements and for Vocational Plans. Expertise in music, arts, speech, dra- ma, foreign language, composition, literature and reading and writing skills makes a well-rounded person and a well-rounded department. Georgine Hawley, English Robert Luckey, Music Barbara Luchsinger, Communications Susan Kolojcski, Art 71 BUSINESS, MATH SOCIAL SCIENCE The practical aspects of life are dealt with in the Business, Math and Social Science Department pro- grams. Students can earn 2-year degrees or short- term certificates in areas ranging from tax accounting to typing, algebra to trigonometry, and how to handle social problems to how to handle hostage negotiation. The department offers a variety of business, math and social programs. Dr. Eugene Estes, Biology Science and Health — working together to make life better. The science section of this department delves into biology, ecology, zoology, anatomy and chemistry. Meanwhile the health half helps students grasp the intricacies of operating room technology, cosmetology, licensed practical nursing, associate degree nursing, health ed, basic first aid, and physical education. Automotive classes repair vehicles for the cost of parts to gain experience. Architecture and interior design students actually design as part of their learning experience. The college meets the demands of advancing technology by providing instruction in safety and certificate updating as well as two-year de- gree and certificate programs. Wilanna Patton, Nurse Elliott Bevis, Copy Service 89 RLC JAZZ BAND IS BIG HIT IN MEXICO Mexico rocked to the peppery sounds of the Rend Lake College Jazz Band during an eight-day visit the middle of April. The 22- member ensemble was one of seven groups from the United States s elected to attend the Fiesta Musical Mexicana, the first Illinois banc on the community college level ever invited to compete in the international musical Olympics. The Rend Lake College contingent brought back a bronze medal as the only jazz band to rank. High- lights of the trip were six concerts in three cities, Oaxtepec, the government-owned vacation center, Jojvtla and Mexico City. The RLC Jazz Band, which held fund-raising concerts within the district to help pay for half of the venture, was directed by Courtney Cox. DRAMA CfllTICS CIRCLE AWARD  PSYCHOLOGICAL DKAM (fROM BDOAOWtlV) Directed by MICHAEL TICK BLACKOUTS Blackouts V was held in the Little Theater in Octo- ber 1979. Blackouts has become an annual produc- tion at RLC in which both students and faculty par- ticipate. The admission fee is used to support a stu- dent scholarship. As always Blackouts was a fun time for all who attended. ALUMNI GAME AND DANCE The RLC gym rocked with excitement as the ghosts of the past returned to test their skills against the present RLC Warriors. The Alumni game was preced- ed by a Student-Faculty game, which was chaotic, and followed by a dance in the Student Center arranged by the Student Senate. SPRING SEMI- FORMAL The Student Senate sponsored a semi-formal dance at the end of the spring semester, it was held at the Mt. Vernon Holiday Inn. Eat, drink and be merry . . . School ' s Out!! EINSTEIN ' S BIRTHDAY The students and faculty with a little help from the American Food Service cut a birthday cake in honor of the one hundredth birthday of Albert Einstein. BLOODMOBILE Each year the Bloodmobile makes at least one visit to the RLC campus. This event is coordinated by the college nurse, Willanna Patton, and is supported by Mr. Wayne Arnold ' s Health classes. The student body has been very generous in sharing their resources for medical purposes. 101 SPRING BBQ In honor of spring the American Food S ervice sponsored a Bar-B-Q. Students thought the day was just right for eating outside, especially when they saw the menu, which featured pork steak, chicken, cole slaw, baked beans, potatoe salad and watermelon. Plus free pepsi to wash it all down. CHRISTMAS DANCE The Christmas season would not be complete with- out a gala celebration and so it was provided by the Student Senate. The Senate members decorated the Student Center in the spirit of the occasion. To com- plete the festivities Santa made a visit and assisted in handing out the door prizes. GUEST SPEAKERS RLC students feel the many sides of life through the experiences related by the myriad of guest speakers which appear on campus annually. These run the gamut of all walks of life from medical doctors, artists and tec hnicians to individuals incar- cerated in the Illinois prison system. Bernard Berg Interior Design Award. BASIC BASIC is an organization of Christians who get to- gether through the week to share God ' s love. The club meets on Wednesday at noon and its sole pur- pose is to share the gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by true Christian love and compassion that is shown in the Bible. Students are encouraged to make the life changing commitment of accepting Je- sus Christ as personal Savior and then living it. In its weekly programs the club has Bible studies, rap ses- sions, prayer time, singing, and fellowship. Greg Backes from Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Ver- non is the club sponsor. The officers are: Bob Burton, President; Brian Whisenhunt and Julia Stanford, Vice- Presidents; Peggy Wilson, Outreach Chairman; and Tim Soutt, Growth Chairman. BASIC is a non-denomi- national club and if you are coming back next year, come and make BASIC even better than it is now. PHI THETA KAPPA Phi Theta Kappa recognizes intellectual achievement at Rend Lake College. Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is conferred on those students who have achieved at least a 3.5 grade point average for two semesters and have been full time students for those same two semesters. Phi Theta Kappa will install new members and elect an instructor for the Most Distinguished Educator Award in the late spring. The officers are: President, Jerry Brownberger; Vice-President, Michelle Davis; Secretary, Dorothy Johnson; Advisor, Tom Burke CIRCLE K Circle K is a student branch of the Kiwanis which is a community service organization. The Circle K was active this year in the ticket sales booths. The club president is Tom Doherty and the club advisor is Mike McClure. PHI BETA LAMBDA The Phi Beta Lambda is open to all students in Accounting, Business, or Secretarial courses. All chapters of Phi Beta Lambda are concerned with the future of the business world. In order to be- come more acquainted with business, all chapters are given the opportunity to attend workshops and conferences. During the spring conference contests in various business activities are held and winners of these contests go on to national finals. The 1978-79 conference was the first RLC ever attended and the club placed in four categories. The officers are: President, Scott Anderson; Vice- President, Nona Beal; Secretary, Carolyn Tenny- son; Treasurer, Rhonda Reece; Reporter, Alan Monroe. ENGINEERING CLUB The Rend Lake College Engineering and Science Club was formed to promote educational development and the understanding of occupa- tional engineering and sciences. It has been a very active club partici- pating in many events this year. In September the club took a trip to the Marion Environmental Laboratory and enjoyed a presentation by Dr. Chin from SlU. An award was presented to Mr. Car! Wagner recogniz- ing him as the outstanding engineering student of the year. They also visited the Chrysler Assembly Plant and the Planetarium in St. Louis. The officers of the club are: Howard Eubanks, President; Brenda Ru- beck, Secretary; and Steve Cusumano, Treasurer. Mr. Richard Heaton is club sponsor. I.S.M.E.A. The RLC chapter of the Illinois Student Music Edu- cators Association participated in several activities during the academic year which included the spon- sorship of Blackouts V, a food and baked goods sale at the Drama Workshop held in December, and a Christ- mas party in the North Oasis. Everyone attended a superb performance by the Maynard Ferguson Big Band at the Plantation Dinner Theatre in St. Louis during February, and more concert excursions are planned for the spring. Eighteen members meet bi-monthly to plan bake sales, carnivals, semi- nars, etc. Trips are taken to furniture establish- ments, design studios, and a variety of institu- tions of design. Officers elected for the 1979-80 school year are: Patti Bowles, President; Jami Hale, Secretary; Jodi Chady, Treasurer and Mrs. Jan Aired, Sponsor. 123 S. E. A. The Student Education Association was designed to help education majors in understanding problems they might encounter in their field. SEA is affiliated with the Illinois Education Association and the Na- tional Education Association. The activities for this year were the used book sale, a fall carnival booth, and attending the state and local conferences. The officers are: President, Martha Abbott, Vice-President, Dar- lene Heil, Secretary-Treasurer, Pam Abbott. LETTERMENS CLUB The RLC Lettermens Club provides a source of athletic fellowship for student ath- letes. During the school year the club oper- ates the concession stand for events that take place in the gym. That income is used for special projects, team awards, and indi- vidual awards. The club also from time to time has mini-sports clinics for area young- sters. To participate in the club one must be a full-time student and member of a RLC athletic team. The sponsor is Coach Jim Waugh and the officers are: President, Doug Creel; Vice-President, Glen Ramsey; Secre- tary-Treasurer, Steve Brown. STUDENT SENATE The Student Senate is the elected student government of RLC. During the school year the Senate is involved in a host of student activities. Just some of the activities for the 1979-80 school year have been: Student-Faculty game, Christ- mas Dance, free movies, student dances and the Spring Semi-formal. A.I.M.E. The American Industrial Miners and Engineers is an active international organization of professionals in the business. The RLC student chapter of this organization is one of seven in Southern Illinois, Kentucky, and Indiana which is recognized by the international AIME. The primary purpose of the RLC chapter is to promote interest in the mining and petroleum industry. Doug Dunbar was able to capture first place in conference play, winning the indivdual title, while Jose Oropeza was the the number two shooter on the RLC team Juan Dominquez and Scott MacDonald rounded out the rest of the squad. There were several new school records set during the course of the year. Crystal Miller had 28 hits, scored 21 runs and batted a lusty .509. Kelly Stewart also stroked 28 hits, drove in 26 runs, and totalled 6 doubles. Toni Martin lashed 3 triples, and Ellen LeGrand hit RLC ' s first home run. Tanya Johnston show- cased her pitching abilities with a 5.02 earned run average and was 6-1 recordwise. This is a remarkable achievement considering the sport is only in its third year at RLC. Coach Jim Waugh and Assistant John Kretz, led their team to a record-breaking year, posting new individual scoring records for Doug Creel and a new assist record for Mark Craddock, as well as the establishment of several team records. The six chosen were Kay South, Crystal Miller, Dawn Webb, Loree Helm, Teresa Murry, and Sharon Wade. This year at the Lincoln Land Holiday Tourney in Spring- field they received the cheerleading trophy for the second consecutive year. The squad ' s sponsor is Lisa Van Horn. Hp-- ' - DEVIL T RRITO YOU BEWARE BASKETBALL The women ' s basketball team went into com- petitive action for their third year. Their coach this year was Dr. Richard Doherty and the team posted its best win record in league competi- tion. Many individual players captured awards in tournament and conference play. There will be four returning players for next year ' s basketball season. The 1980 Rend Lake College yearbook staff would like to announce the change of the yearbook name from TARN (which, incidentally, is a small Alpine lake) to RENDITION. The staff felt that this title better ex- pressed the style of RLC.
