One More Time!! 148 Gwendolyn Brooks Visits Gwendolyn Brooks, poet laureate of the state of Illinois, visited Rend Lake College on April 21, 1977. She held a workshop for Rend Lake College students. She recited her poetry to an enthusiastic group of high school and college students, who packed the Rend Lake College Auditorium. She was appreciated by all. G WENDOL YN BROOKS I went early to sit in front so I could really see her. She came in (walking as if her feet hurt) head turbaned, eyes mild behind thick glasses. She looked like a middle-aged housewife (like my black counterpart I thought, surprised). Had I expected a nimbus of sacred fire around her head? She looked, in fact, like Maud Martha. With quiet humor, she talked of her life; She talked, as I would, of childhood of love in early drab apartments of birthing babies of growing children and, as we listened, she talked of poetry. She read her poems and I was shaken for, when she read my favorite, We Real Cool, she did not read it, as I had done, with a jazzed-up, white-synthetic, jive-beat, but, oh so slow and soft, like a funeral song. The Designers ' Second Edition is a student organization whose purpose is to promote quality interior design. The club members maintained full responsibility for all aspects of this show which entailed obtaining the facilities, selling exhibit spaces, advertising, and keeping order in the exhibit hall. The club also operated a booth in the exhibit which provided free interior design recommendations for the public. This was a major accomplishment for a student group and demonstrates that the Designers of Rend Lake College are not ones to just talk of their talents but they put these talents to work for the public. Speakers One of the high points of Mrs. Hall ' s Social Problems class was the presentation made by three inmates of the State Correctional Institution. They openly discussed with the students the reasons for their being institutionalized, their experiences in the institution, and the possibilities for their release.
