This year twenty acts were formed to raise money for the Black-Outs Scholarships. The scholarships , given to two freshman students, will be presented this Spring in honor of Mrs. Kathleen Kelley and Mr. Jim Yates, who have recently retired from the Rend Lake College staff. Jan Hutson At Hannakuh, Anne presents her parents with some hom ' emade gifts On November 12 and 13 , the Rend Lake College Fine Arts Department presented the dramatic production of The Diary of Anne Frank, a dramatization by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. The play follows the adventures and anxieties of Jewish refugees hiding in a tiny attic in Nazi occupied Amsterdam during World War II . It centers on Anne , a thirteen year old adolescent who, even though she ' s cooped up for over two years in a tiny attic, experiences the joys and frustrations of growing up. Under the direction of Fred Vallowe , an RLC graduate, The Diary of Anne Frank enjoyed a huge success. Mrs. VanDann screams at the loss of her most prized possession. Fred (Tom Nance) and Lilli (Bev Walker) talk about the old days. Lilli (Beki Mauingly) sings about her former husband, Fred Kiss Me Kate , a Cole Porter musical , was presented in the RLC Little Theatre on March 12, 13, and 19, 20. Cheryl Foley and Keith Drayton, both PvLC instructors , directed the production with Suzy Wooley and Donna Spangler helping with the Choreography . The Musical comedy, revolving around a Shakespearean theatre group , concerns Fred Graham, his fiery ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi and a new play which they have come together to stage. An I.O.U. , two whacky gangsters, a flirty chorus girl and her jealous boyfriend, all combined to make Kiss Me Kate a very enjoyable and successful show. Bianca (Glenda Trout) and her suitors (Mitch Fulford, Alan Wilson and Mark Craig) sing about Bianca ' s perfect match. 31 Honors Day The talent and ability of R.L.C. students is exhibited in a wide variety of areas. Each year an Honors Day is set aside to recognize these students. Many departments and organizations give awards to the outstanding students in their respective area . 32 The American Red Cross Bloodmobile visited the RLC campus twice this past year, once on October 27 and again on March 16. Wayne Arnold, the faculty co-ordinator, set up the gym for the Red Cross and, with the help of his health classes, dis- tributed pledge cards to students and faculty. Such efforts produced a record amount of blood given at the college . ISB9B REND LAKE CO LEGE 33 Collegiate Choir The Rend Lake College Collegiate Choir and Brass Ensemble traveled to Washington D.C. last May to perform on the elipse in front of the White House on Memorial Day. The choir was one of two groups picked to represent the State of Illinois. Choir Members include: FRONT ROW, L-R: Larry D. The choir, accompanied by a Brass Ensemble , was one of two groups picked to represent the state of Illinois during the bicentennial year string of outdoor concerts. The choir left from Mt. Vernon by bus and travelled to Washington where they spent two hectic days trying to see all the sights of the nations capitol. On Monday, Memorial Day, they performed on the Elipse and then were escorted on a private tour of the White House . Upon returning home, the choir and brass ensemble recorded their concert through the courtesy of MCA records. ■I I This year six Rend Lake College students received recognition in the 1977 edition of Who ' s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. The students were selected by a campus nominating committee in recognition of their outstanding abilities in the areas of scholarship, leadership, and service. An early American coverlets display was also ; l f held this year and enjoyed by many area residents . GRENDEL A tree painting by David Gallo 38 Another drawing by Julie Johnson i 39 Music abounded at Rend Lake College this year whether you went in for the formal concerts , performed by such groups as The RLC Collegiate Choir (TOP) , a little outdoor music to pass the time between classes (CENTER) or an informal concert by the RLC Jazz Band in the Student Center (BOTTOM). mi v Terri Samuels and Kelly Mumbower were chosen as the Student Achievers for the 1976-77 school year . ' Winners of the Student Achievement Recognition Program competition, held each year at Rend Lake College, are selected as the students who have made the most noteworthy progress toward their career goals and have shown outstanding leadership qualities through participation in campus and com- munity activities. Competition is held on the local, regional, and state levels. A $100 award is given to each winner in 48 local competition levels. The two winners from each of the six districts receive $250 . The district winners will be judged by a three man panel and the two state wide winners will then receive $1,000 each. 42 14- Vince Mitchell, of Enfield, was chosen as this years Outstanding Agriculture Student. He was chosen on the basis of academic performance, interest and cooperation with faculty and students. Cheryl Stafford was chosen this year as the Outstanding Secretarial Science Student of Rend Lake College and was awarded a plaque for her accomplishments. Making the presentation are Mrs. Gela Goin and Mrs. Imogene Ansorge. 43 A new musical group was formed this year at RLC. The Vocal Minority, a choral group composed of eight RLC students and a small back-up group, sing mostly pop arrangements by recent composers. The group sang at many area activities, including the area Senior Citizens picnic at the lake, and it also performed at the annual Spring Choral Concert. This pop group rounds out the choral depart- ment at RLC, which includes the RLC Collegiate Choir, and the area Com- munity Chorus. The Vocal Minority members are, BOTTOM: Patti Eater, Gary Arnold, Mike Avery, Alan Wilson, and Mike Shreves. MIDDLE: Teresa Davis and Sarah Jones and Beki Mattingly, TOP. 44 4 5 47 SPORTS 49 Baseball The RLC Baseball Warriors started their Fall schedule on Sept. 13 against Shawnee College. With 8 returning lettermen and Coach McClure ' s recruiting, the Warriors put together a well balanced team . The Warriors placed third in the Conference with a 13 and 7 record and placed 2 players on the all conference team. These players were Jack Smith, pitcher, and Chris Valentine, first baseman. This Spring the Warriors are looking forward to a good season, a trip to Florida, and are determined to win the state tournament. Basketball The Rend Lake College basketball Warriors met all that was expected of them as they continued to improve their playing as the season progressed . Facing an extremely tough schedule, which included facing four teams rated in the top ten nationally , the Warriors pulled out the big games to end the season as co-champs of the Southern Illinois College Conference. This year the Warriors also hosted the Sectional Tournament of Region IV . The camp provides a week of instruction in outdoor living skills as well as developing an appreciation of the environment. Student Sports ORGANIZATIONS 65 ' w 1 Pressing Times The Pressing Times is the RLC newspaper. It covers all the college news and serves as a forum for student and faculty opinion. The Student Senate is sponsored by Robert Graham, Dean of Student Services. The Senate is responsible for allocating the activity fee each semester. They provide such services as sponsoring dances , speakers , and making purchases for the Student Center. 70 Basic Brothers and Sisters in Christ is a nondenominational Christian organization sponsored by the Southern Baptist Convention . Activities include leading revivals and group Bible study . They also attended a fall convention at SIU Edwardsville and a spring convention at Bloomington . They are sponsoring three summer missionaries: Gary Arnold and Beki Mattingly in Illinois and Kara Beth Neal in Maryland . Student Education Association The purpose of the Student Education Association is to help students gain a better understanding of education and to assist them in becoming teachers. The club ' s sponsor is Imogene Book. The officers are: Shirley Clark , President , Barbara Whisenhunt, Vice President, Jo Marlow , Secretary , Jan Page , Treasurer and Linda Dawson, Publicity Chairman. The SEA sponsored the used book sale , guest speakers , a Christmas party for children of Faculty members , and a Thanksgiving dinner at which the officers were initiated by the State SIEA president . Scholarships were awarded to Jo Marlow and Barbara Whisenhunt . 72 Designers ' First Addition Designers ' First Addition is a new organization on the Rend Lake College campus. Its purpose is to promote the technical and professional aspects of interior design. The Designers ' First Addition has been a very active club this year in presenting displays of their talents to the college community. The officers are: Ron Goodman, President; Ginger Hood, Vice President; Shiela Bloom, Secretary; Sue Whitsitt, Treasurer; Janet Aired, Advisor. 73 m 1 Young Democrats 74 The purpose of Young Democrats is to stir political interest in RLC students . They put up posters and distribute bumper stickers to make students aware of the candidates and their issues . Chuck Eckert and Mike McHaney were active in winning votes for their candida- tes. cm Circle K The Circle K is a newly formed organization which is a branch of the Kiwanis Club , a community service organization . Phi Theta Kappa PTK is an honor society for American Junior Col- leges. It recognizes those students who achieve above a 3.5 grade point average. One of the ser- vices provided by PTK is the annual presentation of the Most Distinguished Education Award. Dr. Richard Doherty received this award for 1975- 1976. A dinner was held on March 31, at Rend Lake College at which the state organization leaders were present. Awards were given to outstanding members. 9M- I HI I ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY Board of Trustees The Rend Lake College Board of Trustees consists of seven members elected by the district ' s citizens and one student member elected by the student body . The Board of Trustees has fiscal responsibility for and establishes policies which govern the college. This year ' s board members are: Mr. Carlton Apple, Chairman; Dr. Allen Y. Baker, Vice Chairman; Mrs. Marie Simmons, Secretary; Mr. Joe McClure; Mr. B. B. Connaway; Dr. Clyde Funkhouser; Dr. Richard Simpson; and Charles Eckert, Student Member. Mr. Carlton Appl 80 83 41 Dean of Instruction Dr. Kenneth LaSalle joined the college in January 1977, bringing with him a wealth of experience and congeniality to be used by Rend Lake College. His genuine concern for Rend Lake College and its functions has gained him affection and admiration of the administration, faculty and student body .
