For the first few weeks, we were a meek, scared little bunch; many of the group spending their entire day crying for Mama! Mrs. Starkey and Mrs. Blair were always around to dry our tears, and under their able leadership, times soon changed! In no time at all, we began to feel al¬ most as important as anybody and our meekness vanished to such a degree that many of us often had to “stay in for talking. Soon we were in the second grade, again having Mrs. Blair to lend us her guidance and to put our galoshes on for us. That year we had a new pupil added to our group— Jacqueline Waller started to school. In May, we all dressed up in white and wound the May-pole. The wind was blow¬ ing ' so hard we could hardly wrap the streamers,- this was very bad for some of the girls paper costumes. By the time we entered the third grade we had lost quite a few of our group and gained a few more, but we were the same mischievious little group. We kept Mrs. Saunders pulling her hair over our many escapades. In the fourth grade we were divided into two groups. (We were so mean that one teacher couldn ' t stand all of us!) Mrs. Owen took the larger portion of the group and Mrs. Rowland the other part. Most of the gang were be¬ ginning to feel mighty grown-up, but some of us were still babies. Shelby Jean, Hallie Marie and Jerrye were still bringing their dolls to school and cutting out paper dolls in every spare moment. Little “secret groups were or¬ ganized to talk over very important (??) matters. Everything was new in the fifth grade. We had a new principal, Mr. Raymond Bodkin, and his wife was our teacher. We could no longer run up and down the halls before and after school, and we had to get in a line to go to assembly. Right before Christmas, Straightstone School burned down, so we had several additional pupils in our class. We prac¬ ticed from January till May on the May-pole Dance, to the tune of “Stars and Stripes Forever. We still can ' t stand to hear that song! In the sixth grade we were divided again. Mrs. Bodkin kept all the boys and Mrs. Hines took the girls in with several boys who had failed their grade the year before. This year we had our first parties. We had a Christmas party at Mrs. Hines ' house and a St. Patrick’s Day party at school, at which we entertained (??) our parents. Attendance picked up con¬ siderably, but why not? For coming every day in the week, we got thirty minutes extra recess and for coming every day in the year, we got silver dollars. Everyone, with the ex¬ ception of Jacqueline, got the measles and Julia even rep¬ resented our class in the May Court still wearing her splotch¬ ed face!! The seventh grade found us back in Mrs. Hines ' s room, joined now by the boys who had left us the year before. A few of the older boys had quit and Kenneth Reynolds and Ollie Doss were lost to us by going ahead to the eighth grade. We had our usual amount of fusses, scraps, and romances, but we were a happy bunch. We got a pre¬ view of coming attractions when we were visited by the group from Hurt. Lots of cute boys and girls came, but we wondered how on earth we would ever get to know them as our friends. (A lot we knew!) In 1950, forty-one shy, but excited youngsters entered Renan High School to begin the long struggle toward grad¬ uation. Mr. Martin P. Allman was our sponsor, and he al¬ most succeeded in teaching us that if you keep your mouth shut, you ' ll be richer for it! Our freshman year found us bolder and eager to ven¬ ture into more grown-up activities. Some of the girls, having cut their pig-tails during the summer, now “went steady. Jacqueline, Julia, Sondra, Thyra, Jerrye, Emily and Erie made the basketball team, several of them even becom¬ ing lettermen. Wayne, Wallace, Carrol, Byron, and Ken¬ neth Emerson also began their career in basketball. Mr. All- man was our homeroom teachers, and our coach. When we began our Sophomore year, we had a former Renan graduate for our homeroom teacher, Miss Elizabeth Mayhew, who later became Mrs. Regen. Again this year we were active in sports and all extracurricular activities. Mrs. Mary S. Anderson was waiting for the Juniors with her stern, jovial personality, to encourage us to be more civilized. Our Junior-Senior Banquet was splashed with water guns. For several weeks the Junior class was shunned. Mum was the word. Finally, on the night of the twenty- seventh of May, we learned why. After having spent a whole fun-packed day touring Appomattox, we came back to school to a party, only to find that we were the honored guests. We were presented with those long-awaited-for class rings! This party will long be remembered and treas¬ ured by all of us. Now, we are upperclassmen, again under the direction of Mrs. Anderson. Our last year has just begun but already we are very busily engaged in many activities. On the 5th day of November we presented our senior play, The Skele¬ ton Walks, and it was a screaming (??) success. We are looking forward to our trip to Washington and finally com¬ mencement. —MARIE J.
