Memories If one was fortunate enough to attend school when Reliance was begmnlng to come mto bemg he would have trudged each school day to that three room house m No 1 and taken his seat along wlth the other puptls who llved In Reliance Mass Chantry the flrst teacher would call the class to order and the Pledge to the Flag would be glven As puplls became more numerous two new teachers were called upon to axd her namely Mrs Wtlllam Cook and Mrs I L Libby Reliance soon became lasted among the thrnvmg coal communmes ln this area and naturally new teaching facxlmes had to be obtained to accommodate the new people who were contmually movmg ln Soon the ltttle schoolhouse was aban doned and puplls and teachers allke moved to the bulldmg whlch now houses Reliance Local Umon 905 But lt seemed Rehance had not reached uts full growth for once again school materials were moved to a larger and more attractive whlte bunldmg situated on a hull overlooklng the camp Thus bunldmg IS the one which long housed our grade school classes at Reliance At that time nt was used not only for educating the new cmzens of this country but also as a communxty church and a hall for other soclal functions Then came the eventful year when those who reached the eighth grade could rude the bus provided for takmg them to Rock Sprmgs to attend hxgh school You see the only grades taught ln Reliance were one through eight Each lowly fresh man would gaze upon his hero and bus driver Donald Millar as he drove the puplls to and from Rock Sprmgs But lh 1925 the buses ceased to run as sounds of sawmg and hammering replaced the steady purr of the motor because ln that year the present hugh school building was constructed for the furthermg of education and tn 1930 the gymnasium was Dr O C Schwlermg now Dean of the College of Education at Wyoming Unlverslty was brnefly engaged to act as superintendent of School Dlstrlct No 7 as well as Dlstrlct No 4 an Rock Sprmgs During the summer of 1925 he worked wtth the Union Paclflc Engmeerlng office ln planning the present hugh school buxldmg and assxsted ln securmg the necessary teachers for the followmg fall Much of the thanks and honor also go to those early ploneer board members who Included Charles Durham Hugh Kelley and Davld Daniels They chose relxable and commendable man to guide the pupils as they attamed their place nn the world Mr Hanna the flrst superintendent of Rellance Hugh School Other early supermtendents Included Mr Busby Mr Martm and later Mr Clyde Curtz who was superxntendent for exght years and who now IS superlntend ent at Evanston Mr C V Irvln then acted as superintendent for four years bemg succeeded on May 8 1945 by Mr Ira 1 Russell the present superintendent From this early begmnmg under the leadership of these supermtendents Reliance Hugh School has attamed an admlrable record scholastlcally and athletic ally Now a member of the North Central Assoclatlon of Schools RHS has an excellent school band a modern hot lunch program and educatlonal departments that are commendable School Dlstrlct No 7 has not lagged by the wayslde recently for this year a larger modern grade school bulldmg was erected to replace the old whlte building Yes early llfe at RHS was the foundation of our present system and much gratitude 15 due these people who made II possible for us to have this monument for teaching future world leaders O XX ll 9 . 0 . , . y .
