C lass History Four years ago, the present senior class, with an enrollment of 26, entered an important phase of their lives as freshmen with radiant faces and anxious hearts. Under the direction of Miss Mary Cook we began with electing oliicers. Claude Thomas was elected to lead us with Willetta Wilde and Richard Telck helping. All of our class participated in Hobo Day in October. We ended the occasion with a dance in the evening. Dolores Reay and Claude Thomas were chosen candidates for Sweethearts for the senior hop. The following February some of us took part in the Valentine Girl-Date-Boy party sponsored by the Glee Club of which many of our class were members. The Class of '4-8 honored us with a St. Patrick's dance. Everyone had a good time and we were very grateful to our hosts. To end our year the girls participated in an F. H. A. assembly known as What Are We Going To Wear? D As sophomores we elected Spiro Varras as president, VVilletta Wilde as vice-president, and Helen Bucho as secretary-treasurer. Miss Regina Black Sponsored our class which was composed of 25 pupils. All high school pupils were honored at a Spot Dance of which we were sponsors. We were the lirst class to put on a dance of this kind. We spent Thanksgiving at an all-school party, with a Thanksgiving motif featured in the decorations. Happy days were here when we entered high school on a bright sunny morning as juniors. Members chosen to head our class of 21 were Everett Hernandez, Spiro Varras, Geraldine Kobler, and Willetta Wilde . To help us in one of our most important years were Mrs. Alice Schmidt and Thomas Manatos. The end of football season was highlighted by crowning the Princess and Pirate. Candi- dates from the junior class were-Geraldine Kobler, VVilletta Wilde, john Wilson and Kenneth Besso. Under the direction of Miss Regina Black we presented our junior play, Desperate Ambrose . Leads were played by Bill Lee and Dolores Reay supported bv Everett Hernandez, Claude Thomas, Spiro Varras, John Wilson, Willetta Wilde, Loretta Wilde, Maxine Brown, La Verne Coet, Sharon Graham, Henry Telck, John Fortuna, and Charles Williamson. Pleased faces were seen in February when our class rings arrived. We really felt that we were wearing the badge of '49 graduates. April 9, 194-8, was a very memorable day for many students. This was the day on which the junior prom was held. Blue Hawaii was the theme of the dance. Dolores Reay was crowned queen, with Betty Box and Kathleen Christopher as her attendants. We had a joyous ending of this school year when we escorted the Class of '4-8 to their highest goal of high school-graduation. As seniors we began with 18 members, led by John Wilson, Bill Lee, and Richard Telck and sponsored by Miss Delight Kearney. Members elected to the Sand staff were Spiro Varras, editorg Everett Hernandez, assistant editorg Kenneth Besso, business manager, and the rest of the class as reporters and columnists. Miss Regina Black acted as Sand sponsor. The senior class chose not to hold the annual senior hop. December 3 would have been the date of this occasion. Claude Thomas, john Fortuna and Loretta Wilde were chosen as leaders of the annual under the guidance of Miss Gwynne Keeney and Miss Regina Black. Due to the death of Miss Keeney on December 7 we changed to a new sponsor, Miss Delight Kearney. The entire class helped on the annual work. Ordering name cards and choosing announcements was a big day for us as it meant that we would soon be coming to the end of our high school years together. Under the sponsorship of the Pep Club many of us attended the Girl-Date-Boy dance. Tamperini's trio furnished the music. The main highlights of the year for the Class of '49 were senior play, April 22g senior week, which began May 23, class night on May 24, when we displayed some of our talents in the skit which we presentedg baccalaureate on May 223 and above all, Commencement on May 25. We, the Class of '49, owe our success up to this point in our career to our parents and teachers, without whose guidance we would not have reached this goal which we have had in sight these many years. -44,
