Strength, knowledge, and learning are represented by the new Reitz Y, seal, making its initial appearance in this Senior Edition. Designed Slfluf HEX by Erika Gresse and Charles Ringling, it may be used on future letterheads, school jackets and sweaters and similar articles. 1,49 X ln search of a different cover idea for this year's Senior Edition, several staff members suggested a school seal, which could also be used on other articles representative of Reitz. Permission was granted by school authorities, and the seal was drawn. During the March l5 meeting of the Student Council, it was officially adopted. The oak leaf symbolizes strength-strength of mind and character needed to be successful in any phase of learning. The open book represents knowledge, which is acquired after years of study. Finally, the torch symbolizes the light of learning, ever burning in this free land of ours. I 7fze Alain 6094 Teachers are those people sometimes hard to get along with but impossible to get along without. Although occasionally impractical, sometimes unpredictable, they are perpetually unfailing. Their job is to teach, their pleasure is to see students learn. Teachers are as human as all other beings. They eat the same foods, wear the same clothing and breathe the same air. Only their great service to young mankind sets them apart from others. Teachers are the main cog in the never ending cycle of learning. They compose the human chain used to connect knowledge of ages past to the minds of today's generation. Constantly learning, them- selves, they are trained to pass it on to others, While it is the duty of some to construct buildings, manufacture automobiles or assemble refrigerators, it is the duty and privilege of the teacher to take the youth of today and, through their guidance, mold them into the law abiding, respectable, useful citizens of tomorrow.--N.S. 4 MISS INEZ AHLERING . . . Unsung meal heroes in this picture were Emma Lupton, Louise Peeling potatoes and serving meals were among the duties of Baker, Janie Sanders, Carry Coleman, Alma Steinback, Willie the cafeteria workers. After becoming accustomed to the hectic life of high school, we elected Mary Groshart David as president, Billie Jo Myers as vice-president, 'Charles Epperson as secretary and Nancy Heinlin as treasurer. ln the world of sports the freshmen held their own. Mr. Barnett piloted our freshman football squad of forty-three boys and Mr. William Trott coached our twenty-four member basketball team. Our class activities started off with the Big-Little Sister party, which was given by senior Big Sisters for freshman girls, Talented members of our class presented a talent program March 13. A class picnic bought many freshmen rornping to Mesker park in the spring. We enjoyed the productions by upperclassmen. Ghost Road was the first Fall play of our high school days. Why the Chimes Rang was presented before Christmas vacation. The seniors this Mrs. Virginia Tyree year gave The Little Dog Laughed, which made us look forward to our Senior play and the years ahead. Always to be remembered by each senior will be his homeroom teacher of four years. Eight faculty members who served as homeroom advisers were Everett Hender- shot, Mrs. Virginia Tyree, Al Longibrake and Miss Ruby Strickland, in the first row left to right. Standing behind were Gilbert Wiehe, Raymond Jones, James Barnett and Clarence Riggs. Saphamaae em As sophomores, studies became more difficult, ball games more interesting and extra-curricular activities more time-consuming. Charles Epperson guided us through this year with the assistance of Joan Fleming, vice-president, Joyce Hartford, secretary, and Bill Hayden, treasurer. The football team this year did wonderful things. We belonged to the school that won both the 'City and SIAC football champion- ships, and many of our sophomores were on the squad. Eleven boys from the sophomore class helped the reserve basketball team win 14 of 16 games. Some of our class members were in the 72 piece band which won first place in the band division at the annual West Side event. Rain, rain, rain! We were discouraged by the rainy days preceding our class picnic which was held in the Old Heidelberg in Mesker park. But the loveliest day of May dawned for our picnic and for us. Mr. James Barnett Recenl' ' uniaa eaa Our junior year was filled with the gaiety and excitement of upperclassman life. Many memorable events occurred during our exploration of this different school and social level. Our class officers were a very important four. Charles Epper- son was president, Gearlene Plump was elected as his assistant. As secretary Joan Fleming worked with the treasurer, Gary Moore, and the other officers in planning class projects. Sports hit a peak in Reitz-especially with the football team winning the city, SIAC and mythical State championships. ln basketball, we won the SIAC first rating. A small town, Milan, with l6l students, won the state finals. The track squad won the city trophy. Six of our classmates starred in the Fall play, Running Wild. A spring concert, Say lt With Music, was given by the Concert band and orchestra. Among the many highlights of this year were the air raid drills and the various community drives, which netted many junior homerooms baskets of apples. The nearness of our senior year was evident as we chose our class ring, jacket and sweater and senior picture studio. Evansville College Union building was the site of our first Junior-Senior prom, Hawaiian Sunset. May 2l will always be remembered by the dreamy-eyed juniors of '53-'54. Twenty-eight juniors were honored by being inducted into the National Honor society. Finally, the class of '54 was graduating. We juniors sat to- gether, the boys were dressed in navy and white, the girls in white. As James Pirtle, president of the graduating class, gave his last speech as a Senior and presented the mantle to Nancy Sander, we became the Senior class. We marched out as Seniors with the words and duties in our hearts. IO The Senior class officers, Nancy Sander, president, Joyce Hartford, vice-president, Fred Walton, secre- tary and Gayle Slifer, treasurer, solemnly stood in the doorway of the future. Senicvz em Fall came rapidly and the year went even faster. We passed the stage of classes, homeroom periods and ECIA assemblies. We were graduating. Sitting, dressed in caps and gowns, we recalled the events of our last' year in old Reitz high. Things started popping in October as the Senior girls had their choice in inviting the boys to the class party and the freshman girls to the Big-Little Sister party. The first semester was crammed with studies and duties. We posed for Senior pictures, were measured for caps and gowns and ordered commencement invitations. Spinning through the fall, we had Go-to-College day for all and the first Washington-New York tour for many. During the year Reitz was host for the annual debate tournament and the District Speech contest. Headlining the sports seasons, the Panthers went to the semi-finals. Politics played a more serious role to us as we stood on the threshold to adulthood. We participated in the mock election and general assembly. Dramatists presented Curtain Going Up and One Foot in Heaven, which was our long-awaited Senior production. We were rushed during those three months prior to com- mencement. Reitz Senior night at Evansville college started the long list of activities for us. The Junior-Senior prom, the Faculty- Senior party, the Alumni banquet, our Senior Talent day, the trip to Shackamack, the Commence-ment exercises and finally the Commencement dance with Billy May and his orchestra comipleted our final days in high school. We shall never forget our first day in Reitz nor shall we forget the last. And who will forget those days in between? MICHAEL WAYNE ACKER: NHS 45 NJHS 2-45 BGG I-45 Semester Honor Roll I-45 Chess 8. Phyllis Harrison was treasurer. S ' gcfilion OMHCJIGOLIMM Things were buzzing in the Student Council again this year as the representatives and officers tackled one task after another. September brought a new clan of students to Reitz, so the first things on the agenda were the election of Student Council repre- sentatives for the year and the Freshman Induction assembly. Then came football season and the annual campaign against drinking at the games. After an all-school election, the Football queen was crowned. Several kids had the job of choosing lunch period movies for the coming year. were serving on the P. Y. C. committee and the Students Community Center youth-advisory council, as the Christmas season approached. The Councilers were right in step, with their party where they watched colored football movies as they ate. Basket- ball season brought the need for sectional and regional ticket drawings. Then came springtime and many more problems and jobs. Some of the businessmen came to Reitz for the Kiwanis voca- tional talks and many of the members served as guides, as they did for the Go-to-College day. Such projects were accomplished as the rigging up of an out- door bell, the purchasing of a new flag, and the cleaning and painting of the R. Also in the spring, new officers were elected to serve next year. Probably one of the most worth-while activities was the drawing up of by-laws for honors, awards, and club officers and the revision of class elections. Spring also brought the need for the continuation of the campus care which was a year-round project. The year's doings came to a close with the presenting of the Student Council Citizenship award and the Eighth Grade Day program. - By Joan Fleming. Girls' Cabinet officers began their yearly chore of cleaning trophies. From left to right were Nancy Wea- ver, Gayle Slifer, Sharon Waters and Joyce Hartford. 28 Players in the Christmas pageant were the pages, Kent Freuden- berger and Alan Steurerg shepherds, seated, were Mike Herrell, Sandra Rullestad and Charles Brooks, wismen, standing, were Lloydene Morris, Jim Biggerstaff and Danny Browning. Mary was portrayed by Leola Goebel. Mary Lacefield was the angel. Curtain Going Up, the Fall play, was full of action. Louise Bellman tried to console Charles Myers, after he had downed Leo Wentzel. Their fight was over Jane Ann Hermann. The Christmas pageant make-up crew was composed of Pat Wing, Carolyn Russell, Sylvia Rhode, Sue Carr and Phyllis Winiger. Larry Ham, a grumbling custodian, held Mary Klipsch's shoe teasingly behind him. Margaret Marynell earnestly greeted Reverend Spence, Denis Brown, as Clarence Niederhaus, Gayle Slifer and Nancy Heinlin looked on. l Mell Welborn narrated the part of Fraser Spence in the Senior play. As Reverend Spence's wife, Hope, Nancy Heinlin offered her husband, Denis Brown, a bit of advice about his difficult church members. ln One Foot in Heaven Mike Daley, as Hartzell Spence, at the right, had a crush on June Winternheimer, seated in front of him. Adding to the night-club atmosphere, the waiters dressed in white shirts, dark bow ties and dark trousers. They were waiting at the entrance of the dance floor to find the reserved tables for couples as they arrived at the long- awaited event. Classmates just didn't seem to be the same. Girls, in their ballerina formals with colorful shoes to match, appeared to be ladies of the world. And the fellows, in their white dinner jackets and black dress pants, seemed to be modern examples of knighthood. The music was so dreamy that everyone seemed to glide along with no difficulty whatsoever. And the hep cats really lived it up on the jazz numbers. The crowning of queen and king, Linda Harmon and Mike Daley, seemed to bring the memorable evening to a fitting climax. Goodnight Sweetheart wrote the perfect ending to an enjoyable night. As time rolls by, there will still be pressed corsages, blue dance programs with notes jotted down in them and other memories that will bring back the wonderful moments of the i955 Reitz Junior-Senior prom. Reigning over the Junior-Senior prom were the royal couple, Mike Daley and Linda Harmon. After introducing his date, Lynn Clippinger to faculty chaperons, Miss Viola Eblen and Mrs. Alice Getz, Dick Bogard was distracted by a friend while the women chat. I I I As editor-in-chief of the MIRROR for the entire school year, Delores Bergdolt showed her superior jour- nalistic ability and forbearance. 32 That The MIRROR is brought' to homerooms every Friday is taken for granted by many. Here are a few startling facts for those people: An average of I5O man hours is used to get the paper prepared by the staff and 50 man hours is used by the print shop boys. This is the work hours for each week. Every week 2000 copies are printed and The MIRROR is distributed 29 times, therefore 58,000 MIRRORS are printed. 450 MIRRORS are mailed out to subscribers every week, which means the staff has to paste 450 addresses every Friday. The MIRROR is exchanged with 250 other school papers. For every penny The MIRROR gets from subscriptions, staff members must earn five cents from advertisements to pay for the printing. There are an average of 60 pictures taken a month for the regular and senior editions. The staffers use lor waste? 4000 pieces of typing paper a year. The business manager sends out about 500 bills a year to advertisers. The MIRROR earns and spends between 58,000 and 59,000 for the regular and senior editions. This year's printed senior editions weigh approximately one half ton. In this year's regular editions, 240,000 words and names have been gathered, written, typed, copyread, set in type, proof-read, composed, page proof-read and then criticised -by every student in school. Charlie Ringling, MIRROR and Senior Edition cameraman, was al- ways on the run. The staff members of the Senior Edition posed for Charlie Ringling's camera.
