Rolling past Huntingburg 49-44, the Panthers made their season opener a successful one. The Hilltoppers traveled to Terre Haute and dropped their first game to the Gerstmeyer state finalists, 5l-65. Bicknell then came to the Pant'her's den and dropped a 68-54 engagement. Tell City invaded Reitz next and went home on the short end of a 56-46 score, Washing- ton's Hatchets fell before the Panther onslaught, 5l-47, in an overtime affair as the Panthers continued their domination of SIAC competition. The Panthers met disaster in the Holiday Tourney, falling to Princeton and Winslow 45-52 and 44-53 respectively. Lincoln dropped Reitz 56-36, and then Terre Haute Garfield, previously unbeaten, bowed to the Riggsmen 54-48. Still hop- ping mad from last year's one point defeat, the Panthers rolled past the Bosse Bulldogs for an avenging 55-44 decision. Travel- ing to Bedford, the hot Panthers won their sixth straight SIAC victory 48-43. Princeton cooled Reitz off as they won their second game from the Panthers in a tightly played ballgame 50-53. The Reitzmen came back in a whirlwind to stop Boonville 48-35. Jerry Clayton and the crew from Central, with twelve wins and two losses ,challenged Reitz and went home on the short end of a 5l-48 score, The red hot Winslow Eskimos put' the freeze on Reitz for the second time, 6l-4l. New Albany fell 52-49 in a game that' had the fans screaming. Memorial was the last victim of the Panthers in the regular season as the Hilltoppers snowed them under in a 60-42 rout. Coach Bud Ritter's Peru squad stopped Reitz 50-4l as the Panthers couldn't hit the Tiger's basket, Jasper's Wildcats stopped Reitz in the season's final game 57-4l as the Wildcats fin- ished second in the Sl-AC. Sectional time came with twelve teams all aiming at one goal, the Evansville championship. Wadesville invaded E-town to play the Panthers and went home dazed as the Reitzmen unloaded a barrage of field goals and free throws for a 82-46 victory. Lincoln was the next opponent of the Panthers and, putting on one of the longest and most amazing stlals ever displayed at Central gym, they downed the Riggsmen 30-32. This year's team won twelve games and lost nine. They won the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference championship with ten wins and two defeats in league play. They finished second in the city race with three victories and one loss as they played one game less than Central who had a four and on record. They also placed one player on the all-city team and one on the all-SIAC team. The squad started the year with three victories, de- feating Huntingburg 140-293, Bicknell f4O-363 and Tell City C39-24l. They were defeated by a rugged Washington team C52-379. Not letting the defeat' affect them, they rolled up four more victories before losing to Bedford C5l-3ll. They completed the season with a total of nine vic- tories and six losses. The Panthers had plenty of height-ranging from 5 feet ll inches to 6 feet 4 inches. The team consisted of five juniors and nine sophomores. Junior-sized cagemen ended a good season for Reitz by downing the Southern Indiana Conference Champs, Central. Starting the season, the young Panthers lowned two city teams in a row, Mater Dei and Bosse. Then they traveled to Tell City to con- tinue the trial of victory. Returning to the city they met Memorial's Tigers head-on, but the little Tigers fell to the wayside of the strong shooting tactics of the Panthers. Lincoln also felt the sting of defeat from the young Hill- toppers. Then the Panthers had their first round with Cen- tral's Bruins. lt was the Panthers' first loss for the season. But' the tide turned and the Panthers snatched two more victories from the hands of Mt. Vernon and Bosse. Losing in the SIAC tourney, the Panthers bounced back to win the four final city games, Coach William Trott's boys had a good season. City, SIAC, and State Championships were gathered on the hilltop this year by the football team. To win all these honors they had to complete a ten game schedule without a defeat. The Panthers opened their season with an easy win over Barret of Henderson, 34-O. The team displayed the power in that game that was to carry them all through the season. Traveling next to Indianapolis, they played Cathedral and showed fine form by defeating them 20-O. Gerstmeyer of Terre Haute proved to be the Panthers' stiff- est early season competition. Taking advantage of a Hilltopper fumble, they were the first team to score on the Reitz eleven. The Panthers won by a 20-6 margin. At New Albany the Panthers gave a sturdy Bulldog team a 47-6 walloping. Coming home to play a hepped-up Bosse Bulldog squad, the Blue and Gray gridders eked out a I4-7 victory in a game that was played hard all the way. Mater Dei, a young school trying to engineer a triumph over the Hilltoppers for the first time, was leading 7-6 at half time. This was the first and only time during the entire season that the Panthers were behind. In the second half they recovered, and wound up with a l9-7 victory over the Wild- cats. Highly touted Muncie Central, undefeated leaders of the Northern Conference, traveled to Evansville to meet the Blue and Gray. Last half touchdowns by Jim Byers and Bob Martin paced the southern defenders in a convincing I3-0 victory over the Bearcats. The Vincennes Alices were the next to fall, 44-7, in a game that featured many long touchdown plays. Don Siscel's 75 yard jaunt and Larry Stofleth's 85 yard punt return were the highlights of the game. Memorial's Bengals ventured to the West Side only to receive a 40-O trouncing at the hands of the Panthers. End Bob Fisher caught two TD passes to set the determined pace for the Blue and Gray. Central's strong Golden Bears were the last hurdle for a perfect season. Rolling up a 27-O triumph, Fred Russell's 75 yard touchdown run in the opening minutes was one of the many bright spots, Don Siscel, playing his last high school game, showed fine form as he scored twice for Reitz. Page 57 Page 56 Reitz's rough and ready freshman squad came through wiht an excellent season, losing only one of six city duels. Coach James Barnett's boys went out to meet the Mater Dei Wildcats with determination, and came out with a I4-7 vic- tory. ln the next game, the frosh squad pushed the Central greenies over defeat's bluff by a scor of 2l-7. The Panther gridmen broke a halftime tie, and went ahead to score two more touchdowns. Bosse's freshman team fell under the rolling wheel of vic- tory the young Panthers were pushing. They held Bosse score- less, beating the little Bulldogs 6-O. They also downed Me- morial and Mater Dei, for the second time, before they felt defeat. As a result, they tied for the city crown. Cub Coach Wayne Weller's little grid-team ended the season in second place in the Evansville race. The only team to give the young ones defeat was the Central Bear Cubs, who downed them twice. They placed second by defeating the Bosse Bulldogs twice, once on their own field and once on the home gridiron. Coach Allen Horn's reserve boys played a tough schedule this year ago. Horn's pigskin packers won four games and lost two. The reserves scraped by the Mater Dei Wildcats and the Bosse Bulldogs by one touchdown each time, whipping Mater Dei l4-7 and Bosse 6-O. Seniolz grfzllfion all 7alwL My, how time fliesl lt seems only yesterday that we fthe class of '54J were freshmen. l can well remember how l roamed around being looked upon as a greeny. I recall with ease how l longed for the day when l could heckle the new crop of fresh- men. That day came and now has nearly passed. ln fact, many of us will be starting all over next fall in various colleges and universities. Looking back through the last year we seniors can recall many events which will linger in our memories forever. We started to school back in September and were welcomed by a state cham- pionship football team. Reigning as football queen was Doris Keck Cnow Mrs. Doris Dayi, and Jimmy Byers received the coveted Kiwanis award. Re- member how Reitz stood out on the city, confer- ence, state and even the national teams? Then came basketball season, and with it we won another S. I. A. C. championship, How can we forget that last minute shot by Lincoln's Don Moor- man in the sectionals? Once again the Kiwanis Page 22 club visited Reitz and this time it was to honor Skip Knight. Of course we will never forget the events that took place in the spring. There were picnics, parties, the Prom, Commencement, and spring sports. Reitz continued in her winning ways this spring, The baseball team won the city championship and the track team followed suit with the same. Yes, of the whole year, we will probably remember more from those happy spring days. As we seniors say our final goodbyes, we turn back once again to the school and friends we have known and say, Thanks for the memories, may you remember us as we shall remember you. Yes, seniors, these are the things which I shall always remember, What other events do you recall? Reitz has been good to us during the last four years. As we turn our backs on her we bid her a fond farewell. To the rest of my class I say best of luck, and as the' words of the concert choir's theme song goes, The Lord bless you and keep you. -Jim Paul. 014154 ancffqalfialllfiwi Page 20 Scholarship winners were greeted by Mr. Wayne Weller in his office. Officers for the class of '55 during their Junior year were Gary Moore, treasurer, Joan Fleming, secretary, Gearlene Plump, vice-president, and Charles Epperson, president. Glafu P Ten years have elapsed since the class of l954 was gradu- ated from Reitz High School, and the members of that class, engaged in a variety of jobs and professions, have become widely scattered. However, a gala reunion has been planned for this week and almost everyone has returned for it. The committee in charge of all arrangements for the re- union was faced with a terrific problem-finding housing for the members of the class and lsince most of them are married? their families. As a solution, they decided to lease the Hotel McCurdy for a week, and the members of th class of '54 are already beginning to arrive. The first group to arrive is now over at the main desk. After warm greetings all around, they have started talking shop. Someone is mentioning new textbooks-that's Jack Horstketterl Nancy Alsing and Nancy Altheide are standing behind him with their arms full of books. Why they're all teachers! Of course that's it, because here come Sharon Be- bout, Betty McLemore, Carolyn Reasor and Carol Keil. James Lamb, now a professor of nuclear physics, is the next to enter, and behind him are Dolores Nelson, Sharon Dunham, and Charlotte McRoberts, instructors of the physically handicap- ped. Bonnie Schlegel, carrying a 'baseball bat and a bowling ball, shouts a cheery greeting. She's now a physical education teacher. Bob Hape, teaching at Harvard, and Barbara Nietham- mer are next. Helen West, head of the Congressional Library, follows them, and she is joined by Bill Schoenbaum, Charles McReynolds, and Glenn Sussott. The boys are world renowned inventors and credits to the class. Laden with briefcases, Jim Tudor, Daymond Williams, Charles Perry, Harry Brown, Ron Burgdorf, David Riddle, and Jackie Nicholson are the next to join the group. Glancing coldly around, they immediately begin to extoll the merit of various and sundry items. They are, unquestionably, sales- men and . . . with the exception of Jackie, who represents a lingerie firm . . . all sell screw drivers. To the stirring strains of martial music, David Moore, Bill Kappert, Donald Temme, Allen Hinderliter, Dale Oberbeck, Officers for the class of '56 during their Sophomore year were Pat Johnson, president, Pat Bishop, vice-president, Jane Ann Hermann, secretary, and Mary Jo Niethammer, treasurer. Iris, here on leave granted by Pogo, is head of the WAF office at the Pentagon, and Mary Ann is currently on KP at West Point. Harry Land, Ed Land, Darrell Lowrance, Gerald Brenham, and Bob DeVillez, also in service, have been detained by the President and are expected later. ' f4Ke4fl'a14lf5 stature has been measured by an apparent degree of success. Time after time, men have been con- demned to failure simply because they lacked the visible aspects of success. What, actually, is success? The word itself is rather an insignificant term for something that means so much to the human race. To define suc- cess is extremely difficult because it is an abstract quality. Success is an indefinable quality, and be- cause this is true, it cannot accurately be guaged by any known measuring device. Being comprised of many individuail aims and ambitions, it means something entirely different to each one of us. For the past four years we have been experi- menting with success. Through our various clubs, Page I6 value success highly and to place it in its true perspective, Our experiments have taught us that success, no matter what its form, is largely a matter of personal satisfaction. Any job well done is, in its own particular way, a success, something that may be viewed wtih pride. Because this school has been of primary impor- tance to us for the past four years we have con- tributed a great deal of time and effort to it. What little we have done will remain here, but, as we graduate, we are taking with us something far greater. Confidence, the most important thing that Reitz has given us, is the key to all success and to the preservation of the American way of life. -By Anne Mandeville LILLY STRUPP: Typing and Shorthand Awards .... Al- most from the moment it began, our senior year has been an eventful one. To herald a successful close to our high school career, the football team this year won the City, the SIAC, and the mythical State championship. The ordinary projects of school kept us busy through late Fall, but after the Christmas holidays we began to realize that time was growing short. Each succeeding week brought some new senior activity. The Senior Play was given April 29 and 30 and, almost before we thought it possible, the time had come for our last Prom. After that, in whirlwind fashion, came the Faculty-Senior Party, the Alumni Banquet, Senior Talent Day, and final- ly, Senior Week! As we reminisce about the past four years, we remember not only what happened to our class and to Reitz High School, but to the entire nation as well, ln the short span of our high school career the population of the United States has reached l63,000,000. Three diminsion movies have become commonplace, and televiewing has become the na- tional hobby. Now, all research indicates that black and white television will be obsolete withTn a few years. Politically speaking, the Republican party, after twenty years in involuntary retirement, has again come into power, and Great Britain again has a woman as its sovereign. During our brief stay here, the United States has been engaged in great war, and the advent of the hydrogen bomb has made the complete annihilation of mankind possible. In the silence of a sunset Commencement, these are the things we remember as we sing: Hail to the our Alma Mater . . . is ga E gm Officers for the class of '54 during the Senior year have been Jim Pirtle, president, Larry Higgins, vice-president, Tom Greenberg, secretary, and Don- ald Richey, treasurer. Page 5 Page 4 Glau Sfmwxau MISS JEAN MARSHALL MR. ALLAN HORN Glwu Dancing rays of early morning sun shone bright- ly that Fall day in 1950 when the Class of '54 first climbed the long hill to enter Reitz High School. During our freshman year we were primarily con- cerned with orienting ourselves and finding our own particular place in the cycle of a new school life. As class officers that first year we chose Bill lgleheart, Tom Greenberg, Jack Fisher, and Don Williams to serve as president, vice-president, sec- retary, and treasurer, Our freshman basketball team that year won the SIAC title, and the highlight of the entire year, as far as we were concerned, occur- red when the varsity basketball team won the sec- tional, regional, and semi-final titles, losing by only two points in the game for the state championship. As sophomores, we began to extend ourselves and to become more active in extra-curricular activ- ities. Our class track team was victorious in the lntra-class meet, and our big social event was a party in the school cafeteria. That year our officers were Bill lgleheart, president, Carol Combs, vice president, Jim Pirtle, secretary, and Janice Taylor, treasurer. When we became juniors we joined the sophisti- cated ranks of the upperclassmen. To guide us in the first year of our newly acquired dignity, we elected Jim Pirtle as our president. Tom Greenberg served as vice-president, with Skip Knight and Don Siscel acting as secretary and treasurer respective- ly. The football team, including some Juniors, won che City and SIAC titles, and some our musically inclined members helped the band win first place in the Fall Festival contest. Attending the Prom that year, as well as ordering senior class rings and sweaters, reminded us that our own senior year was not far away. -1 Senialul We are dedicating this year's Senior Edition to Jack Steele, one of our classmates who was killed last summer. Jack was a valuable member of our class, and each of us have missed him. genial: Zcfzlfian Slaff EDITOR-IN-CHIEF ..........................................
