THE KILLER - JOE HARRISON I was a hunter stalking my quarry. At least I believed my- Q self to be. I was now the proud owner of a new .22 rifle, al- I f-A though I knew little about one, except sighting and pulling f the trigger. Being a typical slicker from the great metropolis,- I had never seen a real live rabbit, only in pictures. Never- If pf, xg lheless I had always wanted to hunt and kill a fat little cotton- , VM XA- . tail. ,if Sj- 'Ihe day was clear and cold, perfect for hunting, a light snow covering the hardened ground. As I trudged along, the snow made a funny crunching sound under foot, and I liked it. I felt good all over, from the tip of my warm fleece-lined cap to the soles of my heavy, spiked boots. The trail I was on abruptly turned to the left, causing me to nearly lose my balance, but it served to bring me back to reality. VVhere would I look for a rabbit? I remembered having heard or read of rabbits habiting brushes and briars, so I headed for the nearest clump of undergrowth. Almost on my objec- tive, I heard a peculiar sound in t.he snow, like a rolling tire on wet asphalt. I wheeled around in time to see something flash over a knob and disappear into a clump of bushes, crusted with snow. I hadn't gotten a clear glimpse of the fleeting object, but I was sure it was my adversary. It took me a full minute to regain my composure, but when I did, I set out coldly calculating how to trap the creature. I soon formulated a plan. I started walking in a wide circle around his haven, gradually closing in. My eyes fairly burned the bushes in search of the doomed hare which you must remember I had never really SCCII. My huntsman instinct was now an obsession. My trigger finger quivered. I was seized with an uncon- trollable passion to send a bullet' crashing into its head. I knew I must not let this feeling get the better of me, or I'd ruin my plan. I got ahold of myself, cocked my gun and waited. I hadn't noticed until now. but it had started to snow and was getting a trifle colder. I looked up to get a squint of the sun time. It must be about . . . at that mo- ment something flitted by me from the clump of underbrush. I was so stunned I just stood agape watching the round, white, fluffy, little tail gradually grow smaller and smaller and disappear. On the spot I swore that I would find that rabbit, even if it took me the rest of the day, and when I did, I would snuff out every ounce of life within him. ' For a minute, I sat down on an old decayed stump to marshal my wits about me. It was snowing a little, harder now and I shivered slightly. I still don't quite know whether it was the cold or a feeling of futility. Suddenly, with the savage- ness of a leopard, I. sprang to my feet and viciously kicked the old stump with such a blow it broke and Hopped into a decaying heap. The rabbit's tracks! I could have stalked him. Now those delicate tracks were covered over completely by the ever-increasing tempo of falling snow. For several minutes I just stood there incensed, perspiring freely, with the mercury at 120 above. Then I had a hunch - the infernal thing would return: it probably had its lair near by. The tension subsided. I pulled up my collar and settled down to wait, how long I neither knew nor cared. Although the snow had about stopped, the wind grew more piercing. I slapped my hands together vigorouslyg my fingers were stiffening. I might not be able to pull the trigger of my gun if I stayed in this unbearable cold much longer. I shifted my rifle onto my left shoulder to relieve the stabbing pain caused by the intense cold and pressure. By this time my jacket was nothing but an insulation to hold in the freezing air that had seeped through. - I was beginning to wish I had never heard of a rabbit when suddenly a mov- ing something caught my eye. I jumped behind a near-by tree. 80 My whole body became tense. For the first time I saw my prey clearly. Closer and closer it came, each hop bringing it nearer to certain death. About fifteen yards from the clump of bushes it hesitated. I held my breath. I raised my rifle to my shoulder, cocked it, and sighted. The rabbit stopped again. It sensed danger and froze perfectly still. It was only about ten yards from me at this time, but still did not present a perfect target. It seemed hours that I stood there, waiting, for that lithe, little hare to move, but now at last I was sure I had him. Finally I could stand the suspense no longer. I moved out , from the tree and sighted again. The rabbit jumped. I fired Vp-lf. simultaneously. The rabbit faltered and fell. The blood It --If ,. ,' ' . y flowed from the wound, literally washing the life from him. 'Y-I , The thrill of killing my first rabbit was short-lived, how- 4 U E I ever, as this feeling gave way to black despair. Instead of yt . f V being a victor, I felt myself a ruthless killer. Leaving the rab- fffii' , -fr KY N-W bit as it lay, I slung my rifle over my shoulder in disgust and H - A headed for home. THE TERRIBLE DOCTOR - VICTOR IYIELTON As George walked down the steps, his mother called, Don't forget that dentist appointment, George. All right, he said. George kept on walking. He knew he would try his best to forget. All the way to school he kept picturing the .--kg? dentist pulling his tooth with a long pair of pliers, while he was ILL standing on his chest and making him scream with pain. He knew it wouldn't be as bad as that, but he didn't like the idea anyway. f lings! On the way to school George met Tom and Jerry. They were laughing and shouting and talking about the fun they would have V after school as they played football in the vacant lot. Hiya, GeorgeI they shouted. Hi, boys, he returned weakly. It was so hard to talk for he had the dumps away down deep - that dentist with the long pliers. By this time he was only a block from school, and everyone was rushing to school and shouting to one another. - George walked up the stone steps and into the marble-floored corridor. It was a pretty school, if a school can be pretty, with its bright corridors and neat rows of lockers on either side. It wasn't a very large school, at least not for a high school. But St. Mary's was only four years old, and it was growing all the time. George opened his locker for his geometry and biology book and went to his first-period class. He had forgotten about his tooth and the dentist with the long pliers during the geometry class, but on the way to biology he stopped at a fountain to get a drink of water. As he bent over, the dentist and the pliers came back with start- ling clarity along with a sharp pain on the right side of his mouth. He was back in the same old slump now, with his mouth feeling like it was full of pins. As he walked to class, he was a perfect example of the last rose of summer. He tried to study, but he kept reading about the dentist and the pliers. Now his tooth hurt, and this made him feel even worse. When the morning classes were over, there was a shuffling of shoes and slam- ming of locker doors as everyone hurried home, but George couldn't get en- thusiastic even about eating. The sun was warm and bright, and there was a soft breeze blowing as George walked home for dinner. As George walked into the house, he could smell the dinner cooking. Is that you, George? his mother called from the kitchen. Yeah, Mom, it's me, said George. He ate his dinner very slowly, making sure that his food stayed on the left side of his mouth. After dinner Mother made him brush his teeth, wash his face and hands. and comb his hair. so he would look nice for the dentist. ' I 81 By tl1e time George had got all ready it was getting pretty late, so he had to run most of the way back to school. But he hnally made it on time. During his afternoon classes, George tried to forget about the dentist, the ache, and the pliers. And compared with the morning classes, he was quite suc- cessful at it. But George knew it couldn't last very long. The last bell rang, and school was out. For the other boys the worst part of the day was over, but for George it had just started. He shrugged his shoulders and started walking down a little narrow side street. He was slow and unde- termined - if he were late, the doctor might not be able to take him today. He turned up Main at Madison. Now George felt nervous - there were only two blocks between him and the doctor with the pliers. He walked slower than ever, but all at once he was stand- ing in front of a large building. He stepped in and looked at a long row of names. In the second row, live names from the top, he saw in large letters, DR. QI. B. ATWELL - DENTIST 3D FLOOR. George walked over to the elevator, took a big gulp, and 'pressed the buzzer. ' Presently, it came down, the door opened, and George stepped in. Third floor, he said. The door closed, and up they went. When the elevator stopped at three, George went across to the oliice. ' No one was there but a good-looking nurse. She asked him his name, looked in a big book, and then took him into an- ' other room, there was the DENTIST. He smiled and said, e N vp Hello, George. And then the funny thing happened. He ' put George in the chair and just took a long thing that you V xv' 42 pick nuts with. Then he exchanged the pick for a weak little ' V I drill. He put the drill in George's mouth, right on the sore X L tooth. Then he talked and talked to George about the World . Series. George didn't feel the drill, his mind was on tl1e pliers. All of a sudden the Doctor stopped drilling and reached to the nurse for a hunk of dull silver and packed it in his tooth. The doctor thenygave George a glass of warm water, told him to rinse his mouth, took his apron off, and said, VVell, George, that's all. Don't eat any hard food tonight for supper, drink milk. You're finished? George said. Yes, all done, the doctor said. George got up, and hurried out. His tooth didn't hurt, the doctor hadn't had a long pair of PLIERS. There's time enough before supper to play some foot- ball, George thought. , a .VV A PERSISTENT SALESMAN - .IEANNE BRAND All my life I had never seen a really persistent salesman ,F-N ,qi until that cold, snowy day in December. He rang the door- Stl 'gal bell, and when I saw him my heart stopped. He was young, ff lf l ' I would say around twenty-four, and very nice looking. He 5, ilzm..2',. was my dream of an ideal man. I wondered what he wanted, 4, f 1' and then he spoke. I fl Good morning, are you the lady of the house? -- ' Yes, I said, feeling very happy but curious. it Xxx .wr Well, said he, I represent the Goof-goo Doll Manufac- turing Company. When I realized that he was a salesman, I felt terrible, because my mother had always told me that some day I would meet one who was really persistent, but it never dawned on me that this nice-looking man could be one of those persistent salesmen. Now Miss, if you will just let me in, I will show you a sample of our dolls, Were, his next words, and though I wanted to let him in QI always did like to look at dollsj something inside me told me not to. 82 I'm sorry, but there are'no children in the house and we would have no use for any dolls. You might try next door - there are some children there. I'm sorry. With these words and a smile, I started to close the door, but it was not easy, his foot was in the door. Surely you have a niece you would like to buy a doll for. No, I said, I have no niece, so will you please remove your foot from the door? Sticking his foot in a little more hrmly he said, Then you must have some friends who have small children. No, said I, growing very angry, I have no friends. Then if you have no friends, a doll will be just the thing to keep you com- zany. I Upon hearing these words, I grew thoroughly angry and gave him one hard push. Being thrown off balance he landed at the bottom of the porch steps look- ing very bewildered. Then I said, very nastily, Your dolls will keep you com- pany down there, too. THE REAL THING ' BY CARROLL LENSING Jack Russel left the room to go to see the Dean about visiting in New York. To save money, he had been working in a restaurant after school and helping 5 mn the janitor in the morning. The night was devoted O to study, and there was plenty of it in this school. ' t 'tba It was a 'boarding school for boys only, and -Iack's tuition was paid for all four years by his father before , ,7 his recent death. x f . , I 1 It was a gloomy day outside and some of the boys' vw ,,,,1' iv. dormitories were just as gloomy. There were about seven boys kneeling in a little ring in the center of the floor, and the dice were rolling freely. Come on Bill, get in the game. No thanks, said Bill. - What's the matter, Alan said, are you afraid of losing your money or some- thing? Not exactly, said Bill, I have seventy dollars and besides, I just gamble on the real thing. ' Well, frankly I think you're yellow, Alan said. The rest of the boys mum- bled, and went back to the game. You'1l see, said Bill. He satvdown on the bed to watch the game. Panting like an engine, -lack, came bursting into the room. Well, what happened? everybody yelled at once. I get to go! I get to go! Jack yelled. I get to go to New York to see my mother, and in the middle of the year, too. .Iack's mother had been sick for two years, and she had grown worse since her husband died. Bill sat there taking it all ing it was the first time he had heard anything about lt. Jack started to pack immediately. Oh, my God, Jack said. W'hat's the matter? said Bill. ' Someone has stolen the money I had saved for the trip - sixty dollars! Somebody would have to be pretty dirty to do that, Bill said. Yeah, replied the rest in amazement. The Dean heard of this, and within twenty minutes he was in the room. XVell boys, the Dean said, I guess you know we have a thief in this dormi- tory. .Iack's train leaves at 8:30 in the morning, and if the money isn't returned in I5 minutes, I'm afraid he won't be able to go, for we must go after the res- ervation. I'll just turn out the lights, and we'll walk around the table. The thief had better drop the money somewhere. 83 The walking started, and Bill was in the middle of the line. When the lights went on, there were six ten dollar bills on the table. Well, I'm sure glad that's over, the Dean said. After he had gone, Alan said, Let's see your wallet, Bill. Bill refused. They took the wallet by force, and found that he had just ten dollars in it. The Dean stepped back into the dorm. Anxious eyes met him. Did you by any chance lose this, Jack? Why, that's my money envelope, -lack said. You dropped it in the office. The lady found it when she was sweeping, said the Dean. The Dean left and they all looked at Bill. Gee, I'm sorry Bill, honest I am, Alan said. Oh, that's O.K., said Bill. Now I know what the real thing is, said Alan. CONTRATERRENE 'ATOM SMASHING - CHARLES DEWIG For years, since the universal adoption of the atomic theory of matter, it has been the dream of ' physicists to convert an atom of one element into Q, fi that of another by changing the charge on the atom nucleus. The term atom smashing has been applied to this process which consists of chipping R or crushing the very core of the atom, the proton. Since atom smashing has become one of the most interesting fields of scientific research, giant ma- chines have been designed and erected in which protons or deuterons, the nu- clei of heavy hydrogen, are given the necessary energy of motion and then al- lowed to crash into a target of the element to be transmuted. A machine invented by E. O. Lawrence of the University of California, the cyclotron, is about the best known and the most successful atom smasher of the present time. Protons in a machine of this nature may be given as much as 30,000,000 electron volts of energy. However, only a small fraction of the protons actually hit atom nu- clei and cause transmutation. Although atom smashing by these large machines has been slightly successful, the enormous cost of the machines and the tremen- dous amount of energy necessary to manipulate them destroys their practicality. After, reading certain puzzling facts about meteorites and their theoretical explanations, I drew the conclusion that perhaps there is another possible proc- ess by which one element may be transformed into another. On rare occasions certain meteorites were observed to explode after striking the earth, and when trying to recover them no meteoric rock could be found. Since a normal meteorite does not explode when contacting the earth but creates a deep crater and causes a shower of meteoric rock, these strange phenomena mystified scientists for many years. But aided by a hypothesis which has recently become popular, scientists can now put forward a complete though startling explanation. This explanation is based upon the theory that there exists a dif- ferent type of matter, different from any kind we have ever known. So before some mysteries connected with meteorites could be explained, it was necessary to conceive a new type of atomic structure. In the physicists' mind there exists a theoretical set of elements which have been called contraterrene matter. It differs from the terrene matter with which we are familiar because it consists of atoms with positive electrons revolving around negatively charged nuclei. The positively charged electron is called a positron, the negativelv charged proton is referred to as the negatron, and there is also a general belief that there is also a 'neutrino without any electric charge. Like a proton, a negatron would tend to form a complete atom with other nega- trons in the nucleus and positrons instead of electrons in the outer shells. If combined properly, a new set of ele- ments could be created with isotopes, lm-- definite chemical reactions, compounds, O O 0 0 and alloys. But perhaps they already 9 ' 9 exist somewhere in the universe outside Q + of our solar system. Stars and star clus- ' . ters and maybe some of the comets may o 0 be composed of this type of matter, but O 0 it has never been proved and in all 0 0 0 0 probability, never will. T errene Oxygen Contraterrene Oxygen 84 To produce this kind of matter the problem would be to create a negatron. There is definite scientific proof of the existence of the positron, positively charged and of about the same mass as the negative electron. There is also some reason ,to believe in the existence of neutrino without any electric charge. It is a matter of fact that the negatron has not yet been found in nature, yet there is no reason to doubt its existence. However, atomic theory supplies a good rea- son for the difficulty in finding the negatron, for it could exist only for an in- finitely small fraction of a second. This is due to the fact that it would tend to form an atom of contraterrene matter which would immediately react with the terrene matter of the earth. The two types of matter fundamentally different, mutually exclude each other. If, for example, a terrene atom of oxygen would encounter a contraterrene atom of the same number of positrons, the two atoms would destroy each other by flaring up into a burst of gamma radiation. A re- action of this kind would doubtlessly release tremendous stores of energy, per- haps many billion volts. The remaining neutrons would be left over as 'fashf' For this reason it is very difficult to detect the negatron that might spring into existence. If this reaction is probable, a new question arises. VVhat would happen if, say for example a contraterrene atom of eight negatrons would come in contact and react with a terrene atom of over eight protons? The result would possibly be a form of atom smashing where the remaining protons, electrons, and neutrons would tend to form a new atom which would contain as many protons and electrons as the difference of electrons of the original terrene atom minus the number of positrons of the contraterrene atom. But since the negatron would immediately react with any terrene matter about it, all work would have to be carefully planned and carried on in a vacuum to eliminate reactions with un- desirable matter. + - - 0 O Q 9 9 I ' + f 2 ' + 9 O o o + + , Q Au atom of contraterrene hydrogen coming A contraterrene atom of oxygen coming in in contact with a terrene atom of helium contact with a terrene atom of neon suppose should yield an atom of extremely heavy edly would yield an atom of terrene helium. terrene hydrogen. The atoms of a series of carefully controlled reactions of this nature would combine and form a complete new material, probably one of the ninety-two elements. If this were so fand in all probability it isj one could hardly calculate but few of the possibilities of such a reaction. The production of almost any known substance, perhaps uranium being the only exception, would be in the immediate grasp of chemists and physicists. Thus, as a summary, the whole process hinges upon the discovery or produc- tion of the negatron. After years of further research about atomic structure which will result in a better understanding of positive and negative charges, the negatron, now existing only in the scientist's mind, may become a reality. If the charge of the proton could be reversed, even for only a fraction of a second, a carefully planned reaction could result in the production of a certain desired material. Radium and other rare or radio-active elements could be artificially made, thus eliminating long and complicated processes of purification. The discovery of the negatron would, without a doubt, revolutionize the sciences of chemistry and physics. Perhaps somewhere in the near future, in the superscientific postwar world, the negatron will be found and if used properly in the service of mankind its great benefits to the human race could never be measured. 85 lass Teachers must carry deep in their pulse their functional purpose - to instruct and to inspire. 86 NW! ,, 4.
