BACK ROW: Frank Stone, secretary, Jerry Rietman, president, Gene logel, vice-president, Gene Mattingly, treasurer ln the autumn of 1943, we, the largest Junior class of girls in the records of Memorial High School, donned our white socks and stepped proudly into the ranks of upperclassmen. Wistfully we watched the lucky Seniors initiate the green Freshies, longing for the day when we, as Seniors, would be privileged to inflict like miseries. After our capable class officers were ushered in, we settled ourselves for a year of intense study at test tubes and typewriters. On the memorable Saint Catherine's Day we accompanied the Seniors to Mass and treated them to a waffle breakfast, followed by a thrilling movie at a local theater. We selected our class rings with pains- taking care and iubilantly received them one bright spring day, thereafter displaying them proudly on third finger, right hand. ln March we were entertained with an inspiring performance by our golden-voiced Glee Club. Under the skill- ful guidance of our capable teachers, we mas- tered our subiects true to form and to the best of our ability, we crowned our efforts with a mag- nificent Prom, which all agree was typical of Junior spirit and a credit to Memorial. -l . . . THE GIRLS Time marches on . . . we, the present Juniors entered Memorial in September, 1941 . . . green as any Freshman could be. However, since that time we have participated in innumerable ac- tivities . . . sports . . . student productions . . . scholastic accomplishments. In '41 we published rival newspapers, held our own athletic tourna- ments and took part in the student productions. 1942 . . . the War . . . and we, now Sopho- mores, became more serious, more educated, and best of all we escaped the wiles and trickery of the upperclassmen. During this year we were second in the sale of war bonds and also succeed- ed in placing some of our mates on the varsity football, baseball, and basketball teams. September, 1943, saw the maiority of us back in the classroom again to begin our JUNIOR year - a year of increased activity, responsibility, and scholastic achievement. Several members of the class played on the varsity teams and did ex- cellent work. During the year our dramatic ability was discovered with the result . . . four of the six male characters in the school's annual production, Spring Fever, were Juniors. Then came the Ju- nior-Senior Prom which was one of the most elab- orate Proms in the history of the school. Now that the year is drawing to a close we are beginning to realize and to anticipate the added responsibili- ties which lie ahead of us next year. No doubt some will be serving Uncle Sam in fighting for the glory of our beloved country . . . but those of us who remain to graduate will try to uphold the honor, dignity, and loyalty which becomes a Senior of Memorial High School. . . BACK ROW: Paul Weaver secretary, Bill Kleindorfer, vice-president, Dick Alexander, president, Arnold Jacobs, treasurer Although we're the Sophomore class, we still haven't outgrown many of our Freshman antics. We are noted for our wild screeching and run- ning in the halls. Without our late-comers to class and lunch, we wouldn't be the same lovable girls of last year. At almost any time and any place, you'll find us at our favorite pastime - dancing. But later When our work is done, Our diplomas won, We'll be thinking of this Sophomore year. These words from our class song express the feeling we will have when recalling that year so full of fun - our second year in high school. We'll be thinking of those real friends, our home room teachers, Sister Mary Gertrude and Sister Marie Carmel, who helped us so much. We'll be thinking of those classes in which we had to grin and bear it , of Caesar, of whom some had double doses, of geometry, where we learned to copy angles without cheating, of bioloQY in which, at one time or another, we all decided to become surgeons. And so, we end our second year with this refrain: We'll be true, ever true, To the school that is ours, Where we spent many wonderful hours. . . . THE GIRLS Boys gathered together, leaving their summer iobs and vacational hobbies to form the Sopho- more Class which transcends all others. Remember the assembly before the Bosse football encoun- ter, Memorialites? The most hilarious assembly of the year! For such an extensive class it was, of course, imperative to include capable government of- ficials. Elections took place early in the fall. All those who had registered in September were al- lowed to vote. Dick Alexander was chosen presi- dent, Paul Weaver, vice-president, Bill Kleindorfer, secretary, and Arnold Jacobs, treasurer. No class would be complete without its con- tributions to the school's athletic activities. Charles Schmidt, playing right end, and Tom Pirnat at fullback were awarded varsity football mono- grams. Lawrence Holder was a first string guard on the basketball five and merited a monogram. The Sophomore dance scaled high in student opinion. Bengal Bouters supplied a full afternoon of rugged entertainment on March 17. Well, that's all for this year, friends, but the same gang will be back next fall ready to fight and to study to add more laurels to the Memorial wreath. . . One bright September morn one hundred and forty of us bewildered lads, hailing from all sec- tions of Evansville, assembled and listened to the welcoming words of our first period instructors. We impressionable youngsters were gradually ori- entated into a new world, a more rigid life. The rough spots wore off by rubbing shoulders. Our faculty numbered fifteen priests and brothers who moulded the plastic youth into firm foundations of Christian morality, citizenship, and scholarship. Then our schedule became a more formal fact. The rigors of Latin were made simple for us by Brother Venard, we found x with the aid of Brother Albertus and our English was corrected by Brother Maurus. These classes were sufficient mental calisthenics for our group. Coaches Don Ping and Art Cosgrove listed our physical prowess. With the passing months, an understanding, a spirit of union grew among faculty and the stu- dent body. The cafeteria became a scene of dis- cussion and dances, the spacious backyard, a gridiron where our athletes punished the pig- skin and themselves, the gym, the locale of our assembly and of hard fought intramural basket- ball, the auditorium, the general meeting place for social and cultural affairs. ' U l THE BOYS On September 7, 1943, an army of frightened Freshman girls thronged the immortal halls of Reitz Memorial High School. Our first sensation or rather humiliation was our initiation. Most of us will probably agree that it was the most hectic week we ever spent. The Sisters were no doubt as glad as we were when initiation was over, for they didn't exactly relish teaching girls with immense green bows in their hair and huge billboards hanging around their necks. On a warm October day, the entire class filed into Room 210 to elect class officers. Oh, what a thrill! Twenty Freshman girls and boys decorated the cafeteria in preparation for the Valentine Dance. The paper dolls were the distinctive item of dec- oration. The Glee Club gave a recital on March 16. The program proved to be a picturesque display with the Seniors and Juniors in formals and the Sopho- mores and Freshmen as patriotic snow girls. The Freshman girls came closer to our Blessed Mother when they became members of the So- dality in a beautiful ceremony in May. We may be sure that now our Blessed Mother will take special care of us throughout our high school days and throughout our entire life. The road was a bit tougher in the second round, but the Blue and White came through the city race with five victories and a lone tie. Top contest ofthe season was the game with Central of Muncie. The North- erners came to Evansville with an excellent record, ranking a top berth in State grid circles. The Tigers led by Captain Endress played championship ball and won 19-6. This victory gained Memorial Statewide recognition and the number two spot in the final State grid ratings. The team composed of ten Seniors and one Junior showed its calibre by placing four men on the All City squad and one on the All State team. Cap- tain Frank Endress was chosen as All State fullback as well as a member of the All City eleven. They beat Bosse 27-25 during the holiday season in a hardfought contest and came back against a dangerous Central club to ring up a 30-28 victory. With the city championship at stake the Bengals lost to the Reitz Hill- toppers 33-24. One of the high lights of the season was the victory over Boonville on the latter's home court. The Pioneers were rated as one of the top quintets in southern Indiana. In the sectional tourney the Blue and White again won their way into the finals where a superb Bosse squad annihilated them 46-29. lt marked the second year in a row that Me-morial's colors were carried into the final game.
