Of the thirty-one who started, seven have completed the journey. The seven who started were Janice Paulsen,Lee Petersen, Helen Mennenga, Elinor Linder, Bill Ragsdale, Catherine Robinson, and Craig Dirks. Miss Roberta Worley who is now Mrs. George Lonergan, was the pilot of our first fli ht journey. Lee Retersen and Billy Ragsdale thought school sort of monotonous ani failed to hear the bell and were late for afternoon classes. But, not pouring all the blame on the boys, two girls, Helen and Janice, visited the city one noon and were late back to school and also missed recess for two weeks. Miss Marsh increased our musical knowledge this year. This year went fast so our plane came in for a landing for three months' rest. The air journey was ready to start again and everyone was as anxious as ever. Miss Anna Hepperle took controls on this trip. The important thing this year was learning how to write. No one joined this journey but Janice Pauls en moved away so didn't join us in second grade. The first thing we knew it was time to refuel or have three months' rest. Our report cards showed we were able to join the flight. September came fast and soon our airship was ready for the third trip in education. Grace Robinson, who is now Mrs. Ralph Lerch, was our pilot. The new subject of interest was the study of the world, geography. Our music teacher was Miss Collister. Robert Bown joined the class and Allan Wilkinson joined us from Grundy Center. In the fall of l9h2 we were ready for another take-off. Miss Tenny was at the controls. This was an exciting year for Miss Tenny was a very athletic person. She was also subject to hiccoughs during history classg perhaps she didn't like the lesson any better than the rest of us. Jim y Lewis joined us this year from Eldora and he says he is sure that the school in the center of Eldora is the Public school for good boys and girls. Billy Heithoff joined us from Dike. Everett Wrage also joined us, coming from a Rural School. Being good scholars we all looked forward to getting our report cards. This being our last year in the lower grades, Miss Havelcheck guided this flight. No more subjects were introduced this year but the courses were, of course, more advanced. Larry Trepp joined this year from that so-called town of Eldora. Eldora is pretty popular, isn't it. Miss Moklebust, who is now Mrs. Si ond Holt, was our music teacher this year. At the end of this year we were alimlooking forward to going upstairs to Junior High. We all passed and were ready to make the flight next fall. We started sixth grade with all of our last yearfs members and two new members. Janice Paulsen rejoined us from Texas, and Da e Larsen joined the class from a rural school in Tama County. We were introduced to three new teachers--- Mrs. Jenkins who taught spelling and reading,Miss Gardiner who taught arithmetl: and English, and Miss Swenson who did a grand job of starting us on art and penmanship. Miss Moklebust taught our music. We had a hard time adjusting ourselves to so many teachers but soon found out we couldn't talk all the time. we learned the 'American Creed' which we said in the assembly every Friday. we had many different rules including the 'guard house' better known as the 'fourth squad' with which some of us became quite familiar. We improved greatly this year and were ready for another year's work if our report cards permitted. We were now ready for our seventh flight with the same teachers to direct us with our work. Betty Dinnebier joined the class from Hudson. Music was taught by Mrs. Rhea and later by Mr. Myers. In this grade we started physical training--the girls under the direction of Mrs. Barbour and the boys under Mr. Downey. we made our minds work by learning the Lincoln's 'Gettysburg Address' and saying it before the assembly. We organized a basketball team this year and helped win a beautiful trophy for the Junior High. This was the first one Junior High had ever won. An operetta was given called 'The Galloping Ghost' in which most of us took part. This being the end of the war the army came marchingto Junior High with Mr. Woodrow Nelson helping Mrs. Jenkins with the teaching prob- lems. We finally got to our destination though we were sorry to think of leaving Junior High. Neva Ackerman joined the passengers this year from Waterloo. Our new teachers, including some in high school, were Mr. Hafke, who taught civics and managed the boys' manual training. Miss Cooper taught our history. Miss Willis, who is now Mrs. Tom Emmett, taught the girls their home economics. Mr. Marston taught our first year of speech training. Miss Eva John- son trained our musical voices. The Junior High took part in the o eretta,'Dixie Land Minstrel,' under the direction of Miss Johnson. Our class clubs were very numerous this year. We had a history club which was based on the weekly Junior Review and the last half of the year was carried by the Civics Club. Our Eng- lish Club started at the first of the year. We named it after the birthday of Iowa---'The Centennial Club.' Our athletics were conducted by Mrs. Barbour with the girls and Mr. Hafke and Mr. Barbour with the boys. Miss Gardiner was elected class sponsor. We all felt very sorry in leaving the well-known Junior High of the geinbeck School, but we looked forward to a bright freshmen year and on to t e uture. In the fall of 'L7 twenty-eight of us entered R. H. S. as freshmen. Not knowing where to go, we furnished the upperclassmen with many hearty laughs. Being very bashful we were afraid to walk in front of the assembly and we were even afraid to sharpen our pencils. This year we were joined by Barbara Schel- ling and Ramona Halupnick. Our class officers were: President, Kay Tommang Vice-President, Bill Rags- daleg Secretary-Treasurer Marian Bicket3Student Council, Larry Treppg Sponsors, Miss Cooper and Mr. Risdal. Miss Johnson was the producer of the operetta, 'Tulip Time' in which most of us took part. Our annual Christmas party was sponsored by the Student Council this year. The Band Mothers' Club was formed, and they raised money to buy new band suits. In the spring the marching band attended Teachers College Relays and the Drake Relays. We also went to the Northeast Iowa Band Jubilee which was held at Waterloo and the Eastern Iowa Band Festival at Cedar Rapids. By the end of our freshmen year we had gained much confidence and were well acquainted with high school. In the fall of 'L8 we began our Sophomore year in high school. Bill Vest joined our class this year. Our class officers were President,Dale Larsen, Vice-President, Larry Treppg Secretary-Treasurer, Jim Lewisg Student Council, Charlotte Ruhs and later Bill Fluggag Sponsors, Miss Willis and Mr. Maas. The FFA boys had a semi-formal fall dance which was well attended. Later in the year the FHA girls sponsored a jean party at which everyone wore jeans or paid the consequences. This year we won the Northeast Iowa Cedar League football championship by having an undefeated team. The coaches and players were honored at a banquet sponsored by the Legion. During the second semester we lost one of our members, James Roberts, who succumbed after a short illness. We attended the funeral as a group. This year our basketball team remained undefeated until we were defeated by Dike by one point in the County Tournament at Grundy Center. we were sectional basketball hosts to the surrounding schools. Our team went on with their march of victories to the sub-state by winning the sectional and district tournaments. In the last game of the sub-state they suffered their second loss of the year by losing to Waverly. If we would have defeated Waverly, we would have played in the State Tournament. Around 800 people attended the preliminary music contest which was held in our community in the spring of 'L9. Reinbeck received seven firsts. The Glee Club and Mixed Chorus went to the district contest at LaPorte City. The band attended the Waterloo Band Jubilee and the Cedar Rapids Band Fes- tival. This was the year Elizabeth Snyder was crowned queen. Some of our class members served at the annual Junior-Senior banquet. We began our Junior year with no new members. Our class officers were: President, Marian Bicketg Vice-President, Jim Lewisg Secretary, Neva Ackerman, Treasurer, Barbara SchellinggStudent Council,Janice Paulsen and Allan Wilkinsong Sponsors, Miss Staveley and Mr. Bowman. Our football team won the North Iowa Cedar League Conference again. Several boys from our class played on the team this year. One of the projects for this year was an all school carnival which added 81371.78 to the unified treasury. A 60-member all girls' pep club was organized during our Junior year. Our uniforms were orange blouses and black jumpers with matching mittens, hats, and anklets. For the first time in the school history a formal co munity prom was held in the high school gym following the Junior-Senior banquet. Around 500 people danced to the music of Jimmy White and his orchestra. The theme for the banquet and prom was 'Luxury Liner.' We entered the last year of our high school days on August 28, 1950. Our class officers were: President, Jim Lewis, Vice-President, Dale Larseng Secre- tary-Treasurer, Lee Petersen, Student Council, Larry Trepp and Janice Paulsen, Sponsors, Miss Staveley and Mr. Manning. Most of the boys were on the football team which had a season's record of four wins, four losses, and one tied game. We had our three-day Homecoming celebration on October 26 27, and 28. Our candidate for queen was Ramona Halupnick. Features of Homecoming were the fire- men's show, pep rally and bonfire, football game with LaPorte City which we won, and the Homecoming dance with the teachers' floor show at intermission. We held our carnival-November 10 and ll. The seniors sponsored an auction of teachers' services. This special feature was well enjoyed by all. E d We had our graduation pictures taken November 21 at the Troy-Mack Studio in 1 ora. The seniors decorated the steno and typing rooms for Christmas and received second prize. At the time our annual went to press our school year was only half over. D. 1251. WITNESSES ' I resides at 0 resides at 1 9 xkggxi resides at Senior Prophecy Ten years have passed since the class of WSIW have left old R.H.S. As I was eating breakfast early one summer morning in l96l,in the city of Reinbeck, I turned on the radio to hear an announcer saying that Dr. Elinor Linder, famous child specialist and head physician of the St.Francis Hospital in New York City, was to speak two evenings later at the annual Medical Convention at the Hotel Stakley in New York City. I rushed to the phone and quickly called up mytmo old girl friends, Ramona Halupnick and Betty Dinnebier, who is now Mrs. Don Moye, and who are farming the old homestead, and asked them to accompany me on a trip to New York City to hear Dr. Linder speak. They were very glad to accept the invha- tion. We decided to go via Chicago and make it a real vacation trip. We left the Reinbeck Airport at 10:00 and arrived at the Wilkinson Airport in Chicago at lO:u5. We were greeted by Allan, owner of the airfield, and his secretary, Miss Catherine Robinson. After a chat they invited us to lunch at the famous Larsen Inn which is located in the NHeart of the Loop.' Dale, the owner of the Inn, another one of our old classmates, sat down and visited with us. Dale informed us that if we would come back for the evening floor show, we would see Neva Ackerman as the featured star of the Heithoff Variety Show. The show was so well received by Dale's patrons that it is now running for its third season. We had to miss the floor show, much to our disappointment, as our next scheduled stop was at New York City, where we had arranged to see Bill Ragsdale catch for the New York Yankees, in the game against the hicago Cubs. We arrived at the ball park in plenty of time. During the game there was much booing at the umpire for the bad decisions he was making. Once, after he had called a strike, he turned around to pick up a bottle that had been thrown at him. We saw, in great surprise Craig Dirks, who formerly attended school with us. During the seventh inning stretch, we went down to the refreshment stand to get some pop. There we bumped into another one of our old classmates, Janice Paulsen. She told us that she was in town to see that game and do some shopping while Chuck was home taking care of the children. We went back to our seats and finished watch- ing the ball game. The Yankees won by four runs. 3:11 f X e .T K, . QQ'-L S 2 After the game we decided to gotoThe Manning Hotel and get our room for the night. The clerk gave the bell-hop our suitcases. The bell-hop was none other than Robert Bown. We had a chat on the way up to our rooms. He wanted to know what we were all doing since we had graduated. It didn't take long to reach our rooms. We ate at the Hoff's Cafe where we had a delicious chicken supper. After we had finished eating, we decided to goto our room and get a good night's sleqc We were up rather early the next morning and went down to have breakfast. We ate at a little coffee shop. We decided then we had better go to the bank to get some money if we were to go shopping. As we got in the bank we were met by the President of the bank, Lee Petersen. We talked a while and then hailed a taxi to take us to Macy's Department Store to do some shopping. As the taxi pulled up to the curb,we were surprised to see Richard Schick as the cab driver. We had a nice talk on the way to Macy's. We took an elevator, operated by Larry Trepp up to the fourth floor to the Women's Department. He told us that two more of our classmates were employed there. We reached the dress department where we were greeted by Helen Mennenga and Phyllis McIntyre, who were sales managers of that department. When we had finished looking at the lovely dresses, we went down for a coke. When we reached the drugstore and were seated in a booth, the waiter came over to take our order. WWhat will it be?' We looked up to see Everett Wrage, the soda jerk. He brought us our cokes and took time off to sit down and chat with us awhile. We enjoyed our cokes very much. We then thought maybe we would take in a little entertainment at a theater. We found out that Bill Vest had been manager of this theater for the last three years. The next day we went on a guided tour to Radio City. We were surprised to see Jim Lewis as the owner of an exclusive men's clothing shop on the lower floor of this huge building. That night we went to hear Dr. Linder give her talk before 500 guests. The talk was rather technical for us to understand but we were glad to see that one of our classmates had reached such fame since graduation. After the lecture we went to Elinor's apartment for a couple hours' chat before we left New York City for our return trip home. Senior P 0 e m We, the class of nineteen hundred and fifty one, Have really come to school to study-- Not just for fun. So maybe we have had many a different way, But we hope that some of them are here to stay. And here's to you, introducing a few, Some of the things you should know, too. First there's Everett Wrage, who makes the girls' pulses flutter, But when he's near them, his heart turns to butter.
