With their shiny faces and hair combed just so Donna Mae Vogt, Wally Larsen, Kenneth Stephan, LaVonne Sell, Marian Mulder, Bar- bara Meewes, Marlene Hamann, and Bill Frei started on their educational journy through the grades. Later that year Marlys Wood joined our group. Miss Alice McFadden decided to make Reinbeck her home, and she is now Mrs. Ralph Creswell. The time flew and it wasn't long until we were in the second grade. One winter day when we were playing in the gym, Bill Frei cried out that he had broken his arm. What really had happened was that he had hit his crazy bone very hard in a fall. Soon all was well once again. Miss Anna Hepperle was the teacher who had to put up with us and our nonsense. By now school was a snap for us when, much to our astonishment, we found ourselves in the third grade. They say that there is-a surprise in every pack- age, but what a grabbag we turned out to be for Miss Grace Robinson. Arithmeub and geography were added to our studies, but we managed to grasp these well enough to be promoted to the fourth grade. Our first report cards issued that year by Miss Tenny didn't prove to be so hot, so the next six weeks was spent in studying. It wasn't long until even our deportment grades improved after we found out that Miss Tenny wouldn't stand for any foolishness. We were now enjoying music under a special teacher, who was Miss BethCoIHSten Physical education was introduced this year and we all enjoyed it very much. By this time we had arrived at the fifth grade which was taught by Miss Havelchech, with Miss Bowen as our music teacher. We gained two new students this year-- Phyllis Nehring from Buckeye and Donn Lewis from Eldora. Donn says that he came from the Eldora Public School, but sometimes we wonder. After this struggle we were now ready to be introduced into Junior High, We found some new studies here, but the main thing was the WFourth Squad,H which became well known to most of the boys, and some of the girls even got on speakhg terms with it. Among our teachers here were Mrs. Jenkins, principal of Junior High, Miss Swenson, Miss Gardiner, and Miss Moklebust. While we were in Junior High, we learned the American Creed and the poem 'Trees.' Lyle and ,Clarence Smith joined us from Morrison the year we were in the sixth grade. We had been told the seventh grade would be the hardest, but we didn't believe this, until all of a sudden things started popping. This year our class membership was enlarged by the following people: Mar- lene Willer, Willie Lynch, Dick Boll, Betty Bol1,,Bob Hite, Gertrude Aswegan and Luella Blakely. Our last year in Junior High was the year we enjoyed the most because it seemed we ruled the roost. Betty Wheeler, Darlene Harms, Arlene Schildroth, Shirley Jensen, Lois Gibson and John Jipp added more members to our class roll. Because the war was over the teaching force was enlarged by the following men: bk. Harold Marston, speech director, Mr. Woodrow Nelson, civics' teacher, and Mr. Richard Meiers, music teacher. Mr. Downey taught Manual Arts to the boys and Miss Willis taught Homemaking to the girls. Aside from a successful year in our three R's, we had some very interesdng side lights. The Junior High basketball team won a trophy for the school. A large number of the players were from our class. Junior High also produced an operetta, VThe Galloping Ghost.n Under the leadership of Mrs. Jenkins we formed The Old Glory Club. Here we learnedthe proper way to conduct a business meeting. Miss Gardiner acted as our sponsorand helped us have a very nice party--the social event of the year. After a short vacation of three months and much anticipation we enteredhigh school. Here we took our places among the gigantic seniors and tried to look small and inconspicuous. But even with all the effort many of us still got let on the water fountain, one of the many old customs. Our class staged a Halloween party in honor of our sponsors. This year we were joined by Siemon Babinet, Giles Card, Vera McCreery, Wilbur Mumm, and Joe Murphy. Many of these people came from rural schools. Our class officers for this year were: Bob Hite, President, Bill Frei, Vice President, John Jipp, Secretary, Wally Larsen, Treasurer, Luella Blakely, Stud m Council. Miss Cooper and Mr. Risdal were our sponsors. Many of the freshmen participated in the operetta WSunbonnet Sue.W Some of the money from this musica production went toward the buying of the baby grand piano. Miss Eva Johnson was the director of this well-produced number. This year we had a dental check-up and many of'us found that we had somebad cavities to be filled. The Christmas s irit got into all of us and the whole high school drew'nanass The final event of t is season was the huge party staged in t e cafeteria around a gigantic tree. Spring came along with the usual affairs, track meets and music contests. Our class was just getting into the swing of these things when school was oven By the time we entered school for our tenth time, we were a little better acquainted with the idea of what was happening. Our officers for this year were President, Luella Blakely, Vice President, Bob Hiteg, Secretary, Bob Crowley g Treasurer, Wally Larsen, Student Council, John Jippg and our sponsors were Miss Willis, who is now Mrs. Tom Emmett, and Mr. Hafke. Again Miss Johnson was the successful producer of an operettag only this time the theme was a Dutch setting and was called WTu1ip Time.W This year the student council sponsored the annual Christmas party whichums held in the cafeteria. Everyone enjoyed the festive dance around the huge tree and the mistletoe in the corner. Just ask some of the members of our class if they can remember this party--especially in the last annual we produced are some revealing pictures of this event. On April 9, our class lost one of its members when Phyllis Nehring was killed in an auto accident. Our class attended the funeral as a group. Quite a few of us sang in Mixed Chorus and Girl's Glee Club, and the boys also went to this contest at Vinton. All three groups came back home with a II rating. For the first time a band-mothers' club was formed. After much hard work, they managed to raise enough money to buy new suits for the instrumental diviskm of it. These were black, navy style, with orange trim. The marching band attended Teachers' College Relays and the Drake Relays before school was out. We also went to the Northeast Iowa Band Jubilee which um held at Waterloo and the Eastern Iowa Festival at Cedar Rapids. This year Jerry Ehrig, Charles Brandhorst, and Ralph Schlicht joined us. Once again time had flown quickly and we were ready to enter our Junior year after three short months of vacation. J'c ff' 'BH'uP'dv,-M.1H - Presiggntgunlgls Efggog, lgggietvgrgg overs. M6Creg?'?i eqreasurEr?neWalT?fnnLarge?1?, Student Councilg and our sponsors were: Miss Staveley, Mr. Grace, Mr. Hopkins, and Mr. Burg. We were all quite excited and thrilled at the idea of ordering our clam rings. After many months of patient waiting, our rings arrived in the spring. It seems many of them met the usual treatment by appearing soon on the fingers of other schoolmates. The F. F. A. boys entertained the whole high school at a semi-formal fall dance which was very well attended and quite different from most of our parties Later this same year the F. H. A. girls returned the favor by sponsoring a Hjean-partyn at which everyone wpre jeans or suffered the consequences. The class play we produced under the direction of Mr. Grace was nhobgobl n Housen and centered around a kidnapping. Everyone in our class helped whether it was on the scenery building proposition or doing the actual acting. This project helped boost our treasury for the big main event of the year with tm banquet and promz The KXEL Broadcasting station from Waterloo made a tape recording of someof our outstanding people, our music groups like the girls' sextette and Dgijp, Arlene Sc ildroth's commercial advertising the aspects of Reinbec won e g rlsv prize. 3R,,,,-Q,,,,,, , Aiowt We were sectional tournament hosts to all the surrounding schools. For four nights we made good money on the refreshments. This was the year that we won the Northeast Iowa Cedar League Football chanh pionship by having an undefeated team. The Legion sponsored a banquet in honor of the fellows and their coaches. The basketball team was just as good. We remained undefeated until Dike beat us at the County tournament in Grundy Center when we were beat in the first game by one point. The fellows went on with their march of victories on through to the sub-state. The very last game of this tournament was when we suffered our second defeat by losing to Waverly. If we could have overcome the l6 point lead Waverly had, we would have been state tournament material. Reinbeck was host to a speech contest this year, the first one we had partic- ipated in for years. Some of our class members took part in it. The small groups Preliminary Music Contest was held in our community and at our churches and school. About SOO people were here. Reinbeck's ratings were unusually high as we received seven firsts. The Girls' Glee Club and the Mixed Chorus went to the contest at LaPorte City where the girls received a II and the Chorus a III rating. The Annual Junior-Senior Banquet was held on May 7 at the Masonic Hall. Our theme was NMoonlight and Rosesn. After many careful weeks of preparation with making crepe paper roses and dying cheese cloth blue, the big event finally gappened. One hundred eight faculty members, seniors, and juniors attended the :BO dinner. May 18 was the evening we held the big prom in the gymnasium. Vic Miller and his orchestra played for this formal dance. The Baccalaureate Services were held on a Sunday evening at the schoolhouse with both the Juniors and Seniors participating. The girls' formals added arnte of color to the huge throng of people. The band under the direction of Mr. Bowman attended the Waterloo Band Jubilee and the Cedar Rapids Band Festival. This was the year Reinbeck's candi- date, Elizabeth Snyder, was crowned queen. It had rained all day, and that eve- ning, too. But every one was still so excited that when the band got back to town about 12:30 that night, they marched in the rain in a special celebrationin honor of Miss Northeast Iowa. By this time school was adjourned for another year. The last September that we were to enter high school rolled around too soon. Thing three of us entered the senior class together. Our class officers for this year were: President, Bob Hiteg Vice President, John Jippg Secretary-Treasurer, Joe Murphyg Student Council, Bill Frei, Vera McCreery, and Wally Larsen, and our sponsors were Miss Cooper and Mr. Tripp. Most of our boys played on the football team which again won the North Iowa Cedar League Conference at the annual Armistice Day game which was in Reinbeck this year. One of our big projects was an all school carnival at which every grade and organization sponsored some event. We had all kinds of concessions from the Minstrel Show and the Hula Dance to the Duck Ring and Bingo. Our net profit of 81371.78 went into the Unified Budget Fund which is the treasury of all the classes and organizations together. A new organization was started this year. It is a 60 member all girls' pep club made up of all the high school girls. The school bought orange and black jumpers and blouses for them with matching mittens, hats and anklets. Mrs.Grant and Miss Williams were the girls' sponsors, even though they were grade school teachers. This organization has gained wide publicity through its yells and snappy uniforms. At the time this was written the basketball season was not over, the senior class play produced or the annual banquet held. Agg P12 OPH E Q Wilbur Mumm and Ralph Schlicht take off in their new experimental rocket- ship, flying for the service of New York Institute of Aeronautics. fAfter flying for several minutes they stop at Lynch's Mid-Continent Flying Field. They climb out of the ship and enter the office for further instructions. Much to their surprise they see a very familiar face sitting behind the stenographer's type- writer. Vera McCreery, very much excited and with that big smile on her face, welcomes them enthusiastically. As they are discussing old school days, the instructor of the flying field enters. The boys again are surprised to see that the instructor is none other than classmate, Willie Lynch. Vera suggests that all of them go out together that evening for dinner and discuss old happenings. Everyone is in favor of the idea and the date is set for seven o'clock. On the way Vera tells them that the nightclub is located in the fabulous district of Cleveland, Ohio, on Parkside Boulevard. As they drive up to the en- trance, they see the glittering sign WSomongn's Chinese Palace.H The quartet enter the nightclub. The proprietor greets them with a startled look and then exclaims, Wwell, I don't believe my eyes.W Yes, it was Don iZombieJ Lewis. Don gives them the very best table and joins the happy four. The waiter takes the order which consists of a very expensive dinner. As they eat their dinner, the music strikes up and the band leader steps up to introduce a number. The four people recognize him as Giles Card with his sax,who has recently taken over Tom- my Dorsey's band. The evening is spent in the very best of entertainment and the classmates again proceed on their way. The taxi is called by Ralphie and as the taxi drives up, they see the sign on the taxi NSmith Bros, Inc.n The driver steps out and gives with a big old- fashioned grin as he recognizes Vera, Ralph, Willie, and Wilbur. Clarence tells them that he and Lyle claim part ownership in the Cleveland Taxi Corporation . Clarence and the rest hear a sigggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg with the noise of a taxi horn. Clarence remarks that that was Lyle. He says that he gets in a hurry once in a while--even yet. After spending the evening in Cleveland, Wilbur and Ralph get instructions to fly on further west. They stop at St. Louis for refueling and as they are looking the city over they see a sign WStuffy Stephane' Modeling Girls.N The boys wander over to the grounds and see old friend Kenny Stephans giving girls orders about how to pose for a good picture. As they notice the girls, one in particular takes their glances. She is modeling nStuffy's latest invention--- Synthetic Bathing Suit. It's little blondy--LaVonne Sell gives off with a big smile, the camera clicks and she runs to greet her friends. LaVonne tells them that another one of their classmates is secretary at Sure-Insurance Building at 519 Central Lane. Ralph and Wilbur leave after an hour's visit and go to the given address where they find Miss Donna Vogt speaking over the telephone. She immediately lays down the receiver and greets her former classmates. The boys then go to the Murphy Hotel to rest up a bit, when Joe Murphy comes out to greet the familiar friends. Joe takes them to the office and shows them the latest television set which he has purchased. They turn the set on andsa a crowd of yelling people shouting Yea! Brandhorst. As he completes the home run for the last game of the world series playing for the St. Louis Cardinals we see it is Chuck Brandhorst of Reinbeck, Iowa. The managfng HWaldo,' comes out patting each player on the back. Wally Larsen, former Reinbeck lad, is manager of the St. Louis Cardinals teams who have just won the World Series. After the plane has been refuelad, they travel until they land Ka forced landing, by the wayl at Chicago to visit Ralph's aunt and uncle. As they are visiting, they learn that a Reinbeck graduate is one of the grade teachers in Chicago. They stay overnight at the home of Ralph's relatives and the next morn- ing are found at the grade building asking Marlys Wood how she likes teaching school. Marlys tells the boys she has fifteen minutes off and suggests they see a friend who is working at the drug store. Yes, Dick Boll is the pharmacist at Boll's Drug Counter. Ralph says that after nose diving with Wilbur, he probably will need a prescription. The schoolmates leave again after a pleasant trip and are headed west to- ward the old home town of Reinbeck, Iowa, which is now a suburb of Morrison. The first person they run into is Betty Wheeler who is now Mrs. Kenneth Bicket. After a short session with Betty they have rocket trouble. They go to the garage in Reinbeck and find the mechanics in the WModernize Garagen are Siemon Babinet and Jerry Ehrig. They are going out to the field when the mechanics tell Ralph and Wilbur that the school secretary is Barbara Meewes. They stop in and give a quick Hhellou to Barbara. While the boys are fixing the rocket, Ralph and Wilbur take Jerry's 1960 Chrysler Convertible with eighteen cylinders and travel over the new ei ht lane highway to Lincoln. Outside one of the main buildings we see a sign ngou don't get Jipped here.n They walk in and see that this is a very high class nightclub which is owned and operated by that old Lincoln resident, John Jipp. John ex- plains that 3t,ooo changes hands each night. Wilbur tells Ralph that he would like to stop over at Voorhies and take a look at the old town. They land at a very small field and see a sign. Voor- hies--Population 1800. Wilbur says, NIt's really grown.n The first acquain- tance they meet is Shirley Jensen working at the elevator. They have also erec- ted a theater there and Gertrude Aswegen is the co-owner of the theater. The girls tell the boys that Marian Mulder is a receptionist for Pitze's Beauty Sa- lon at Waterloo, Iowa. The flyers grab another new propeller and are off to Waterloo. They chat with-Marian for a while and as they are talking a cherry blonde comes in. She has graduated from Reinbeck High and is now a private secretary for the Waterloo insurance Company. The boys give a whoop and holler, and shake hands with Darlene arms.- By now Ralph and Wilbur have seen practically all of their former friends and classmates, that they decide to see the rest of them. Cedar Falls is their next stop. Here they find Arlene Schildroth working as a botanist and English teacher. Arlene claims she has really discovered a number of things. Here, Marlene Willer is employed by the Bell Telephone Trans-Atlantic Ex- change, as a telephone operator. Do you keep getting the right number, Marlene? The flyers leave Iowa and fly non-stop to California where they land at Marshall Field and the first thing they see is a large parade with a bulletin saying VOTE FOR BILL FREI FOR U. S. SENATOR. Following the large bulletins and posters is Reinbeck High graduate Bill Frei, riding in a Cadillac Convertible, and shouting Hhellou to Ralph and Milbur. Further down the street they see another Bill Frei supporter and as they talk to Luella Blakely they learn she is studying interior decorating. Among the growing crowd, they find Bob Hite trying to get a quick glimpse before he takes the plane back to New York City where he is studying television. The boys see Lois Gibson taking pictures and notes for the paper for which she is report- er. Our friends say a short Hhellon and Hgood-byn and are on their way to the Field House and find that they are to take passengers back with them to the east coast. Among them is Bob Hite who is in a big hurry to make a television program back in New York. The boys are assigned their stewardess for the flight and it is none other than Marlene Hamann. Under the hands of the former Reinbeck High students the plane lands safely at La Guardia field in New York City where the three classmates agree that the class of 1950 was truly a group of successful students fa . 4 !erl..2- a. -wig .4 st,- TLASS - POEMX fi f ' ' 25 We, the senior class of nineteen fifty, qt? .
