Fond memories linger in the hearts and minds of those who climbed those steep steps day after day for one, two, or three years-Memories of pep rallies on those front steps, assembly programs and plays in the auditorium, home coming parades, field daysandpracticing in the stadium for commence- ment. These and a thousand other things make one CHERISH the memory of the OLD yet SALUTE the NEW ...... for these are truly Gfanyzby anof Cfaknyzhy 12295 Foreword Pages 2- 3 Building Pictures Pages 4- 7 Dedication Pages 8- 9 Administration Page 10 Faculty Pages 1 1- 14 Classes Pages 14-53 3 f'+ Sz, N f ,ai 5 s 25+ 4:.Yg-?:+-,gg- s, ' 5 y 9+Q+QJ, nk' ,Nt- J QQYQ1, 23m4 vR+e fl-.Se '4- 'b'2: if a+ 4 8 U r , 53 aQ+f Q 1 Q +'d 1' CEEICHJIJIJIBIZELAJKIIJCI Reidsville Senior High Is New, Different, And Exciting The opening August 30 of the new Reidsville Senior High School was an event greatly looked forward to by most of the nearly 600 students registering. The students were provided maps to help them get oriented and find classes easier. The overall plan consists of eight sections, or building, con- nected to each other by covered walks and corridors, thus form- ing one integrated building. The entire building is one story, with outside walks and inside corridors. The walls of the halls are tile and the floors are terrazzo. Building I is directly to the left of the entrance and consists of sixteen instructional class rooms and a large room for club meetings. The ceilings of the rooms and halls are covered with acoustical tile, and the floors are terrazzo. The interior walls of the class rooms are gray and are complemented with doors and wood work of bright colors. Each classroom also contains a small office for the teacher. Building II houses the library and administration. Included in the library are a conference room for students, and audio-visual room for showing films and slides, a magazine room, a supply room for storing records, projectors, record players and other equipment, several listening booths for hearing records, and a professional library for the teachers. Lounge furniture is pro- vided in the magazine department. The administration area contains the office of the principal, the guidance counselor, and the school secretary. Also in this section are a reception center, teachers' lounge, conference room, supply and storage rooms, student store, health and guid- ance rooms. is . A Building III contains the commercial education classrooms, a large study hall, and a modern home economics room. Also in- cludedin Building III are the biology, chemistry, andphysic rooms, each with accompanying, ultra-modern laboratories. Buildings IV and V, when constructed, willprovide space for a large auditorium and music department. Perhaps one of the most popular buildings is Building VI, in which one finds a lovely cafeteria equipped with many modern facilities. The dining area is resplendent with its attractive fur- nishings and modern lighting. The kitchen with its many conven- iences and latest equipment is truly the pride of the cafeteria staff. Another popular area is the gymnasium located in Building VII. The entrance of the gym is just to the right of the cafeteria. In the vestibule of the gym is a ticket office and a stairway leading to the basement which contains a concession stand, the dressing rooms, showers, and storage space. The gym has interior walls of yellow and gray with a hard wood floor. The back entrance of the gym leads to the shops, which consti- tute Building VIII. Here are located the agricultural and indus- trial arts departments. Other features are an elaborate blower system which is com- bined with the heating system to circulate air in the classrooms and an inter-communications system which provides means where- by the administrative offices may have contact with all buildings at any time. Reidsville is indeed fortunate to have such facilities to offer to the youth of the community. -.A . L ani' ' A, ,,,. ,mf W' X CHANGING CLASSES IN THE COMMON BIOLOGY LAB. f75e 1251. Y X S SSS S Many happy hours are spent at Reidsville Senior High School. Studying and working claim the major part of all students' time. With a little over five hundred students it is possible to become acquainted with almost every one. However quality of friendship is as important as quantity. New friends are made in classes, clubs, at ball games, sock hops, and pep rallies. Each year old friends 'move on either by graduation or by moving out of town. One class must leave every year by graduation. This year the Senior Class has the distinction of being the first to graduate from the newly formed REIDSVILLE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL. Chief among these is help given to the Salva- tion Army at Christmas by the student body. The Latin Club and French Club print their own newspapers. Members of the Speech Club speak to civic clubs. The Future Farmers win parliamentary procedure and judging contests. Library Club members serve the entire school by working in the library. Home Economics students help with parties and banquets. The Honor Society has a tea for mothers of its members and the faculty. The Key Club sponsors the school directory. The Chorus sings for many public gatherings. The Band performs at all football games and special occasions. The Bus drivers transport the pupils to school. The Renocashi staff prepares this yearbook. The athletic program at the new Senior High School has made few altera- tions in the change-over from the old to the new. At the old school last spring the good pitching led by J. Revis sparked the baseball team toasuccessful season. Predictions are for an even better sea- son this spring. Anew practice field for football made it convenient for the long afternoon drills. The Golden Lions ended the season by being defeated by the Canton Bears in the Triple A play-offs. T. Balsley and J. Niemczura were captains of the team coached by C. B. Barham, S. Basinger, and J. W. Knight KHeadJ. Moving into a beautiful modern gymnasium spurred the basketball team to win first place in the conference at the end of five games with 5-0 score, but Wentworth broke the winning streak by downing Reidsville in the sixth game. The season ended Also for the first time in years girls of the upper classes are offered a half unit credit in gym. These are truly changing and challenging times. In the Fall the football team chooses five contestants for Home Coming Queen. All of these contestants are presented at the Home Coming game and the student chosen by the football team is crowned Queen. The seniors select the boys and girls they wish for their twelve senior super- latives. The pictures of these students were made this year at the Frank Penn home. The Presidents of clubs, classes, and organizations as well as the heads of activities choose attractive girls to sponsor in this section. These twenty comely maidens are pictured wearing white sweaters and pearls. The seniors write their own prophecy, statistics, poems, and the like which are printed in this section. The ever-loving snaps wind up this section. I was unable to leave the site of our cur- rent excavations here in Iran. We had just opened a new series of royal tombs, and there was a tremen- dous amount of work which had to be done immediately. I was very proud when I read about your being selected to head the U. S. mission to the U. N. I can understand why you were unable to leave New York. I received a letter from Becky Humphrey, who has taken over Miss Wootton's thankless job. She tried to give me an idea about what our former classmates have been doing. As you know, several members of our class became teachers. Most of our teachers remained in the Reidsville school system. Sue Allison, Pat Dietch, and Janet Wise are working in the elementary grades, while Frances Tysinger and Harriet Davis are at the junior high school. Joan McCullen has become the able principal of our old alma mater. CBoy, I'm glad I went to high school when I didlj Diane Keens is the new gym teacher, Tommie Ward now conducts the chorus, and Maestro Larry Murphy has replaced poor Mr. Moore as band director. Linda Dodson and Cliff Baggett are both members of the U. N. C. fac- ulty. Did you know that Billy Dove and Paul Smith have finally gotten control of General Motors? I under- stand they are planning to revolutionize the automobile industry. I'm afraid that David Diamond, who recently won the Indianapolis 500, will have to be weary of his old pals James Travis, Jimmy Setliff, G. T. Collie, and Carroll Garrett. They are now the law in the Reidsville area. Many of the girls in our class have become successful secretaries and homemakers. Grey Walker, Jo Ann Vawter, Betty Lou Wright, and Geraldine Stone do commerical work for businesses in the Reids- ville area. Frances Teague, Connie Knowles, and Kitty Moore are working in your neck of the woods. Betty Johnson is girl Friday for Frank Duncan, owner of Rand Shoes Inc. and Joyce Simpson is working for the governor of Utah. Ellen Williams married her M. D. Ann Bailey, Jamie Borland, Ferra Jo Hall, Ann Gunn, Annie Lee Bray, Libby Stone, Mary Anne Billingsley, Carolyn Carter, Vivian Rowe, Hazel Echols, Elaine Clark, Qalso teaches musicj, Becky Lovelace, and Nancy Peoples are all happily married. Charles Anna Walker, Toneka Gann, Sandra Delapp, Gloria Murray, and Joyce McKinney are secretaries for their own busy husbands. Mac Chapman always said that he'would be a big hit---he's now a champion fighter. I understand he bent a few teeth in a recent bout. He had to avoid orthodontist Frank Rakestraw during the whole reunion. Lawrence Warf, who started out as a dimestore manager, now owns the chain he formerly worked for. I am sending you a clipping from the London Times. It tells all about the new commerce building that architect Bobby Pugh designed. Betti Bramlett is now chairman of the board of Bell Telephone Co. Several of the boys in our class have successful service careers. Jerry McBryde is a marine, Lyn- wood Sheridan and Jerry Bray are air force pilots, Cary Ware is an army man, and Bobby Childrey is in the navy. CI wonder if he ever did learn to swim.l Do you remember how Betsy Burton used to tell us that she would be our class's first jail bird ? She fell short of her goal and became a commercial artist instead. I always knew Pender Grogan would replace Bob Hope. He and Carol Keith, the big star at Warner Brothers', are doing a picture together. Shirley Moran and Sandra Clymer have opened a new beauty shop in Denver. Donnie Chilton is the world's most famous big game hunter. Jerry Smothers is now president of the American Medical Association. Joyce Watt and Linda Gardner are medical technicians. Lloyd Smith is a medical records librarian and Carolyn Williams is an X-ray technician. Maxine Thomas, Mary Turner, Maxine Thore, Barbara Whitfield, and Toni Chaney twho went to the Congo as a missionaryl are all nurses. Cecil Ivey, Danny Somers, and Tom Hardy are big business men. They own the liveliest resort in Las Vegas. Joe Niemczura whose book HOW TO PLAY SNEAKY POKER is well over the three million mark, also lives in Las Vegas. Tommy Balsley surprised everyone by becoming a Wall Street Stockbroker. I wish Mr. Whittenton could see him now! Don Holiday is now directing his ovsm Dixieland group. Ronnie Brown has become a diesel mechanic. John Foil, a botony professor at State College, is doing research for the government these days. Glenda Smith is an airplane hostess. Nancy Chilton and Sarah Jo Coates are serving humanity as social workers. Faye Pegram and Danny Rudd, our class's only two lawyers, are both campaigning for public office. Our class can boast of quite a few engineers. Mark Horne has become one of the country's leading nuclear experts. Melvin Strickland, James Colvin, Tommy Stevens, and Jerry Standahl, our electrical outlits, have charged their way to fame. Robert Osborne has a top position with Canco, as does Claude Somers with Boeing Aircraft. Sammy Gibbs and Roger Travis have recently completed a hugh irrigation project on the Congo River. I understand that Jim Melvin uses his great professional pull everyday. He has become a dentist. Johnny Dixon, who always wanted to become a boolie , now owns Churchhill Downs in Kentucky. Janet Link is a professional camp counselor in Washington State. Several R.S.H. graduates are in the literary field. Gene Hunt is a U.P.I. foreign correspondent. Frank Montgomery is sports editor for the Review. Susan Manring's new book is just off the press. Alanson Huntsberry is a library administrator in Charlotte. Lastly, there are Billy Herndon and Reather Hinson. These two long ago decided to be professional bums. One of them, however, inherited quite a lot of money. Now they're the richest bums in the state. I hope we'll be able to see each other at our next class reunion in 1982. Sincerely, Gertrude 105 5 'Hx l 2 U ,125 ff? The years that we have ended Like smoke have fled away, But yet they live And always will In memory---each day. Editor's note: Many hours, days, weeks, and months have been spent in pre- paration of this, your 1962 RENOCASHI.
