This 1961 edition of RENOCAHI has been compiled and written for you, the student. It is YOU. These are your memories, the familiar halls, the friendly faces, which have been a vital part of your life. These are your accomplishments, this is your school. We cannot say that we are leaving all the wonderful memo- ries behind, for they have become a part of us. THE RE OCAHI 60 61 School Colendor Announced By Lipscomb Senior Class Meets The first senioi class meeting of the yea1 was held Thursday September 1 with Jim Shockley president presiding Jimmy Apple read the devotion President Shock lev then turned the meeting over to Miss Wootton class advisoi Miss Wootton stressed the impoit ance of regular attendance ex plainlng that the iecoid of all ab sences must be iepolted on Job and college applications She urged all students to write fo1 applica tion blanks to the college or col leges of their choice All those who wish to try for the Morehead Scholarship to U. N. C. were asked to come to the conference room to get applications. In conclusion Miss Wootton urged all seniors tu consult college catalogues and job requirements to assist them in making decisions on schools and vocations. The president then announced the Junior Rotarians for Septem- ber-January. Junior Rotarian for the month of September is Jimmy Apple Student Council President. Council Entertains Faculty The Student Council entertained the faculty with a tea in the high school library Wednesday after- noon September 14. Ellen Wil- liams social chairman greeted the guests and presented them to Jimmy Apple Jerry Smothers Carole Hendrix and Paul Briggs Student Council officers. Lydia Lewis, Julianne Scurry, and Pat Brown, members of the social committee, served punch, cake, and salted nuts from a table centered with an arrangement of fall flowers. In addition to the faculty, all members of the Stu- dent Council attended the tea. Freshmen Elect Officers At First Meeting The freshman class held its first meeting in the auditorium on Thursday September 8. David Hooper class adviser spoke to the group on the importance of electing suitable officers. After nominations were made the group elected Pete Glidewell president' Betsy Davis vice-president' Bill Scurry, secretaryg and Chrys Cons- table, treasurer. Jimmy Apple, president of the student council, was guest speaker for the meeting. The school calendar for 1960-61 in the Reidsville city schools has been announced by C. C. Lips- comb, superintendent, as follows: SCHOOL CALENDAR Monday August 29 first work day for teachers Tuesday August 30 registra tion day for all students from 8 30 to 11 a m Buses will operate and all students are expected at 8 30 QRule of the State School Commis sion demands registration this year on the second work dayj Wednesday August 31 first day of the 180 day school year Since this IS the first day of school it is imperative that all students register on August 30 month of school first will complete their school noon First graders days at Monday September 5 - Labor Day holiday. Tuesday September 27 -- white schools close to afford teachers the opportunity to attend the dis- trict meeting of the North Caro- lina Education Association. Thursday Friday November 24 25-Thanksgiving holidays. Friday December 2 - colored schools will close to afford teach- ers the opportunity to attend the North Carolina Teachers Associa- tion. The Society meets at lunch every other Tuesday in the private dining room of the cafeteria. Routine business is carried out at this meeting and interesting and informative programs are given from time to time. This club meets at the high school on the first Monday of every month and at the Presbyterian Church on the second and fourth Mondays of every month. The club has enjoyed great success and in- creasing enrollment each year. Inspiring and interesting pro- grams are fe atu r e s of every program. This year the club in co- operation with the Student Organ- ization presented a very effective Thanksgiving program. Chief among these are: serving at banquets, giving clothes for needy children and carrying Christmas pack- ages to needy families. This year the F.F.A. members have made an enviable record. They have participated in the following contests in the Federation and won first place in each: Shop Tools Identifi- cation, Ritual and Parliamentary Procedure, Crops Identification and Judging, Land Judg- ing, Public Speaking, Soil and Water Manage- ment, and Electrification. They won fourth place in Livestock Judging. The Club was first place winner in the Federation which entitled it to represent the Federation in the District and State Contests where it also won first place. It had the most points in winnings of any chapter in the Fed- eration for which it received the Overall Banner . Three boys in this Chapter received the State Farmer Degree. BAND ON THE BEAM The Reidsville High March- ing Band plays for all functions requiring a m a r c h in g unit, such as football games, City parades, and Home-Coming. This year itplayed for special occasions-Rally for V-Pres. Johnson, games at Greens- boro, and Asheville, and Band Day at Chapel Hill. The C o n c e r t Band meets daily and members receive creditfor the course. During the year this band gives a joint concert with the Glee Club at Christmas, in mid-winter, and inthe spring. It also partici- pates in the State Band Contest and sends members to the All- State Band at Chapel Hill. These boys and girls average been transported safely to school this year 424 miles per day bringing 216 pupils to by a capable corps of schoolboy and girl school. The school is served by 11 school by any driver is 58 miles per day. 79 L THE RE oc HI REIDSVILLE HIGH EXCELS IN SPORTS ' Basketball Opens Wingfield Resigns Reidsville WhiDS Season With Veteran Players Although football is supposedly the major sport at Reidsville High School, in the past few years local interest in basketball has increased tremendously, and large crowds of people now flock into R. H. S.'s Thompson Gymnasium to witness games between the Golden Lions of R.H.S., under th eexcellent direc- tion of Coach Hoy Isaacs, and their opponents. In his years of coaching at R.H.S., Isaacs has produced some of the finest schoolboy cage teams in the state. The Lions b e g a n basketball practice on October 24, with prac- tice sessions being held three times a week until recently. Candidates for varsity positions are Reynolds, Key, Briggs, Samm Gibbs, Jerry Smothers, Barry Eis- enberg, Tommy Balsley, Jimm Melvin, Henry Link, Mike Hooper, Gerald Canady, Sandy Sands and Jimmy Baker. The Lions have a tough sched- ule, facing such formidable confer- ence foes as Bessemer, Winston- Salem Gray, Morehead, Mt. Air and Greensboro Page, as well as the always-hard-to-whip local op- position such as Wentworth, Beth- any and Ruffin. When asked for a statement about Friday night's opener against Bethany, Coach Isaacs had this to say: Bethany has one of the finest teams it has had in years. They have young coach in W. A. Wall. I think the will be hard to beat. As R.H.S. Football Coach,-. Knight Named George Wingfield, head coach o Reidsville High's Golden Lion foot ball team since 1946, has resigned J. W. Knight, Wingfield's assist ant since 1948, has been named t replace him. Wingfield, a star on Reidsvill High's first championship footbal team in 1930, returned here as a assistant to L. J. fHapl Perry i In 1946 when Perry too as head coach at Elon Col 1935. over lege, Wingfield stepped up to hea coach of the Lions. Wingfield's Reidsville t e a m won state championships in 195 and 1954. His teams won confer ence championships in 1950, 1951 1952 and 1954 and were confer ence co-champions in 1949 an 1955. Knight, a graduate of Elon Col lege, joined the Reidsville Hig coaching staff in 1948 as lin coach and helped Wingfield instal the T - formation offense. Th Reidsville team, under Wingfiel and Knight, had winning record from 1949 through 1955. The 195 and 1959 Reidsville teams also ha winning records. Baseball Has Seven Seniors The R. H. ' A Parents' Night crowd of some 800 fans saw the Western 3-A Conference affair which started out as a one-sided game, but end- ed up as a thriller. Reidsville, completely dominat- ing the first half, rolled up a 12-0 margin before the intermission. Following the usual prelimi- naries, the first portion of the program was focused on the seven cardinal principles of education. In a well-conceived and executed panel discussion composed of fac- ulty members, Mrs. Ruby Williams discussed Training in the Mainte- nance of Health g Miss Nancy McCall, Training in the Funda- mental Processesng Mrs. Sue Mont- gomery, Training in Worthy Home Membership , Miss Anne Woot- ton, Training in Obtaining and Maintaining a Vocation , Mrs. Lorene Satterfield, Training in Civic Responsibilities , Mrs. Char- lotte Cate, Training in the Use of Leisure Time g and S. F. Wells discussed Training in the Devel- opment of Ethical Character. The panel, moderated by William Nel- son, also pointed out some of the overall goals concerned with the formal and informal education of each child. - R H S - THANKSGIVING PROGRAM PRESENTED BY STUDENTS A special Thanksgiving pro- gram was presented at assem- bly Wednesday, November 23. The program was sponsored jointly by the Bible Club and the Student Council. To begin the program, ten members of the Bible Club presented a choral reading.
