A very green group of children climbed the long steps of Reidsville High School to begin four years of study, fun, and memories. I believe they are the small- est runts we have ever had. Wonder if they will ever grow to look like anything. October 18, 1954 Tonight at the football game I noticed Coach Wing- field got soft-hearted and let eight freshmen boys wear uniforms- probably to keep the benches warm. Libby Hendrix, the freshmen cheerleader, certain- ly has made a hit with everyone. December 17, 1954. The old school was really buzzing today with the Christmas spirit. Pretty Kay Comer even had a piece of mistletoe in her hair. L21 January ZZ, 1955. The f r e s hm e n are experiencing their first real exams. Itis doubtful they willemerge safely, but Jim- my Dillard d'oesn't seem to be worried. I saw him asking Annette Smothers for a date today. ,..4r May 18, 1955. Jimmy Comer wandered into a meeting of the Junior bramatics Club today and was elected presi- dent. Everyone was surprized, and Jimmy still doesn't know what meeting he was attending. September 3, 1955. The adage You can tell a Senior by his stately cap and gown, You can tell a Junior by the way he struts around. You can tellaFreshman by his timid ways and such, You can tell a Sophomore, But you can't tell him much! certainly does apply to the sophomores. October 14, 1955. The football team chose Judy Walker as Miss Golden Lion, and she was crowned tonight. February 9, 1956. Tonight Judy Trent w a s c r ow n ed Miss R.H.S.: Phyllis Hopkins and Libby Hendrix were runners-up. The sophomores have taken all the beauty honors this year. April 2.4, 1956 The Romans were out in full force tonight at the Latin Club Banquet. Their consul Buddy Kemp made I 0 104 an impressive speech. He's a rather smart fellow. Gayle Shelton, Judy Trent, and Kay Comer did a unique dance. --S September 3, 1956. The juniors really look like young men and wom n finally. Two of the young adies, Rena Frick a plan many fine majorette routines which add so uch to the football games. November 22, 1956. The seniors received their class rings today. Many of the poor boys hardly saw their rings. Phylg Hopkins, Judy Wa1ker,and Laura Lee Hetzler immedi- ately slipped their dainty fingers into Carl's,Mike's, and Wayne's rings. 9- April 6, 1957. For months the Junior Class had been running around making boxes of strange little objects for the Junior-Senior Banquet. Tonight everyone saw the re- sult was worth all the effort. They had turned the bleak cafeteria into the land of spring fantasy. There was a star-studded show put on by the juniors which included such famous celebrities as: Bonnie Scurgy, Curtis Dic- kens, Anita-llage, Norma Moorefield, Christine Stone, Leilani Thacker, Dorothy Williams, Betty Ruth Bark , Larry Smith, Tommy Collie, Bonnye c onald, Pencie Trent, Sandra SCQLL, David BT5E on, and many others. September 3, 1957. For the last year the class of 1958 entered the great doors of R.H.S. They will treasure eachmoment of this year. November 29, 1957. , xi is After twelve years of blood, sweat,-and tears the seniors rec eived their class rings, a little band of gold with a piece of blue glas s in the center. The steady couples will do some real swapping now. Hugh will do his best to wear Judy'sg she will be weighte,d down by his. Iwonder if Jimmy will let Anrfie see his ? Sandra may get to touch Collie's, but it's oubt- ful. June 6, 1958. The end of the class of 1958's high school days is here. Tonight Mr. McKinney gave out the diplomas for which they have worked so hard. They will not return to classes here again, but I, the spirit of 1958, must remain to wander endlessly through the corridors of R.H.S. I will miss the charge I have watched over so carefully, but I will have proud m e m o r i e s , for they have been a good class. Here on the table are several different articles for which someone may find a use: One stack of old homework papers that were found in the lockersg they were not turned in for some reason. Another is a book entitled How to Pass French in 9 Easy Months After School by Steve Fleagle. Here we have a few test tubes which somehow moved from the chemistry lab to Jimmy Dillard's and Tommy Collie's lockers. Who will bid on these gym shoes, size 10? They served Wilma Smith through five years of bas- ketball practice. Bonnie curry and Ha:g.Sl:ih5It:Q,p have collected some second year Latin translations. These papers have he ped many of our class. Maybe they will help some of the students who are slugging through Latin now. They are not guaranteed to be correct, though. Herciis a priceless picture ofSueD ' . . have bat ng musti'tE'wTong. Southpaw Tommy Schoolfield was pitching, naturally. What am I offe re d for this slightly used typing eraser? It belongs to Lloyd Carter, but he has used as much of it as he can. Here is afender which Amos Whitlow picked up with his bus. He also has several telephone poles. What will you bid for this cleat off Larry Smith's shoe '? He lost it on one of his famous touchdown runs. Must get rid of immediately! David Brooks' seat and book in Miss Frazier's fourth period French class. Agggglgte Smothers will sell her volume of Tard1 Exguses ThatAGet Eggcuiedl' Bonnie Sc will sell her almost empty bottle of perfume, aTways found in her locker, to any girl with t e same ideas. Cleo Robertson is selling his car so that people will stop pestering him for rides to the football games. - .K The class is giving away William Whittenton's tuba and corny jokes. We will throw in the owner if the price is right. Who will bid forthis old ink pen? It is almost worn out from writing themes everyFriday for Miss Wootton. Jeannette Glass will sell her biology drawings to anyone who appreciates the time and effort put forth. We have many other useful articles, but the time will not permit us to sell them. Come by afte r class. . . . . Hazel Shelton and Tommy Schoolfield ,- -rv. i1,L,:.,,..f.-Q Tlx ,..- ' ,- CLASS INVENTORY After much thought and consideration, we, the class of 1958 submit this inventory. Reading- On comic books, Modern Romances, and Hot Rod, we are whizzes. But when it comes to liter- ature and Shakespeare, we run into difficulty. Mathematics- We can ar r an ge to spend our allowances very easily, but the saving of money and the Algebraic expressions give us no small amount of trouble. Writing- Our w r iting ranges from long flowing lines to some that looks like it came from a Chicken yard. Geography- Of specific climates, temperatures, and terrains of countries, we know nothing. But, we can name every rock and tree at our favorite parking place. English- We are not very up to date on our formal English, but we have an extensive vocabulary of slang. . . . . By David Brooks C LASS GRO UC H .t According to the propaganda circulated by teachers, principals, par e nt s,and people who just do not know, we students are s pe nding the best years of our life in school preparing to face the cruel world. I wouldjust like to set a few things straight. It may well be that these are the best years of our lives, but it seems to me that we could be making better use of them out of school. Accordingto our teachers, we are the worst class they have ever had the misfortune to teach. If, by mistake, we ever happen to bring our work in on time, the grade is so low that there is absolutely no incentive to do better the next time. Another thing I want to tell you about is the textbooks that we use. I think Einstein wrote some of the books for college seniors instead of for high school seniors and we just got the wrong books. Who- ever wrote the historybooks sure was dull. Who cares about who discovered Americag everybodyknows that anyway. It would be more interesting to talk about things such as who will win the football game or what the latest fashion in clothes is. I am starting a campaign to end all this homework the teachers pile on us. They think all we have to do is study. Teachers are really strange creatures. They will not even let one carry on a perfectly harmless conversation withafriend in class. How do they ever expect us to develop social maturity? They used to send us to the principal on the average of once a month just to scare us, but they finally decided that that scheme had backfired. It is not that I have anything against Reidsville High, but if I were principal, there would be quite a few changes made. I guess I had better stop now. I will probably get expelled just for this. . . . . Bgnie Scuggy 106 V' GIRLS' STATE Betty Bulb Bagker Norma McKinney BOYS' STATE Wayne Miller Jimmy Dillard Buddy Kemp Cat Fever 'J .V . ' . . . Sandra Yount K, fy, -7 GBHUARY After a long and serious illness, the Class of l958 passed away quietly. Final services will be held on June 6, at 8:00 P.M., in Kiker Stadium, From the day she was born until her last day, Fifty-Eight was such an active class. When she first entered Reidsville High School, she showed no signs that the fate of graduation would ever befall her. She was young and gay. Since she was suchapopular class, she attended many social functions. In her second year, there was a slight indication of a serious disorder in her system. This dis ord e r was a relatively new and unexplainable thing called study. This did not stop her fun, however, for she indulged even more frequently. Now she was attending all the pep rallies, foot- ball games, open houses, basketball games, and baseball games. Her previous early curfew for dates grew later, little by little. The third year of her short life showed an even larger portion of study. She tried desperate- ly to overcome her earlier malady, and she did very well for awhile. lt was really not until her fourth and last year that Fifty-Eight knew definitely she would expire. She was brave, however. She worked on every kind of project she was called upon to do, and she did it well! Even in her last week she was still attending parties and other social functions. This class will be long remembered and loved by her Alma Mater and all her friends. .
