ABOUT THE SEASON Reidsvi1leHigh's Golden Lions, closing out their 1953 season on Nov. 13, with a 27-6 win over Mineral Springs, came up with a good 6-3 record for the year. The Lion coaching staff, headed by George Wing- field, along with line coach J. W. Knight and Jr. varsity coach Bo Sacrinity, are to be congratulated for a job well done. Working with perhaps one of the youngest Lion squads ever assembled, Coach Wingfield and his assistants laid the groundwork for later teams definately marked for greamess. The season produced a new running star in flashy soph. Don Coker, who scampered for four touch- downs against Hanes in the Lion's 39-13 triumph. Guard Charles Hoover, playing his third season as a re- gular, established himself as one of the state 's finest lineman, as did tackly Kelly Mi.nyard, both making the all-conference team. Two of the Lion victories, both 7-6 victories over Hargrave and Tri-City re- spectively, were decided by the talented toe of Big John Medley, the hard-charging fullback. The hard running of co-capt. Bobby Cooke, along with the steady quarterbacking of David Bray greatly aided the Lion cause also. The Lions' major casualty came in the Thomasville game, in the form of a broken leg, belonging to the well-liked scatback,Jimmy Trotter, who established himself this year, through his hustle and determination, as an outstanding contender for future honors. The Lions of 1954 will sorely miss the dependable services of co-capt. William Farling, who played his guard position in fine fashion, along with center Harry Wilson, the other regular graduating. Also leaving the Lions are Max Dixon, Fred Fleagle, Raeford Roberts, Gene Walters, and managers Otis Sizemore and Billy Johnson. Sporting an 8-6 record to this point, they have, however, had the tough luck of losing three of their games by three points or less. Even after those heart-breaking defeats, the girls have come back to win four in a row. The team boasts two outstanding scorers in Co-captains Ann Black and Shirley Williams, both constantly hitting 20 or more points per game. The fine passing of Ioan Fulp, the other regular forward, coupled with the org- standing defensive play of guards Shelby Garner, Linda Pace, and Diana Standahl, go together in forming the fine, well-balanced squad for this sea- son. Coach Jean Scott must indeed be praised for producing such an out- standing cnntender. This year marks the final season for only three seniors. Ann Black, Betty Lou Warf, and Shirley Williams, but their absence will be heavily felt during the coming season. The Lions complied a 13- 5 record, losing only to AAA Burlington, Hanes, Mt. Airy, and Gray twice. The list of Lion vic- tims included such teams as North Davidson, Walkertown, Mt. Airy, Hanes, Wentworth, and Mineral Springs. The 1954 Lions will field a fine, well-balanced squad, minus only four boys from the pre- vious year. Ably captained by Hollis Robertson, this team will undoubtedly be anestablished threat in contending for State honors. Congratulations go to Coach J. W. Knight for his splendid job in fielding a fine team. Those graduating this year are Hollis Robertson, Arnold Moore, Bud Ramsey, and Raeford Roberts. WSH Hi. V- .J . -hw. ,- , HM, .H X. The ex- perience ofgoing back to my early haunts allowed me to thumb freely the keyboard of my memory. I keep dwelling on the many persons who have passed out of that childhood circle that was once so crowded with intimate, jostling person- alities.I find it difficult to become reconciled to the thought that countless scores of that friendly multitude are somewhere with the unconsidered routine of this daily life, and yetl do not know much of the associations they have formed. They have gone their seperate ways, built homes, per- haps, in far-distant states. The town of Reidsville had changed greatly in the past ten years. I found there had been a new hospital constructed by Raeford Roberts Con- struction Co. Some of the men in this company were: Max Dixon, Hollis Robertson, Mike Fargis, William Farling, Arnold Moore, Bobby Talley, Tommy Dixon, Jerry Ware, William Stallings, and Calvin Poole. In this hospital I found many of the nurses were graduates of my class. The Superintendent of Nurses, nn Dudle ,had under her super- vision: Mis es Judy immerman,Ronalda Chaney, Ann Lea P e t ti gre w, Glenda Duncan, Marjorie Waynick, Myrtle McAnnaly, Bobby Jean Teague, Palsy Chrismon, Mary Sue S choo l fi eld, Sara Wright, and Sara Rumley. They have addeda few new do c tors to their staff, too. They are the ho nor a ble Drs, Roger Cobb, Fred Fleagle, Jr., David White, and Glenn Clark, Ir. Maxine Di.xon is secretary for Dr. Clark. Along with a new hospital, Reidsville had added a new clinic. This clinic, run by women, had as it's president,Peggy Brannock, Vice-pres- ident, Sandra Dent, Secretary, Alice DeLapp, and Treasurer, Frances Alston. The nurses in this clinic were: Doro thy Arnold, Marie Barham, Yvonne Baynes, Betty Bray, Mary Earles, and Dorothy Hall. Continuing my tour through the new Reids- Ville, 1 fOUHCl 8 great television s ta tion . There were many of my friends employed here, Kaye Bugher is one the CBS-TV panel for afamous quiz program. Peggy Smith has now replaced Maxine on the Milton Berle Show, and Hazel Moore is Joe Friday's secretary, This television s ta ti o n, WXYZ., had many secretaries, A few w e r e Patricia Hooper, Janet Williams, Nancy Ro b e r ts o n, Barbara Lawson, Christine Cliborne, Rebekah Dickerson, Carolyn Hash, and Katherine Canady. As I was touring WXYZ, I saw Calvert Drinnon, a world traveler and explorer, after his show with Roberta Heffner, the world's greatest fashion designer. As I passed several shops I found the names of them were: Craddock's Reducing Salon: Stewart's Slipper Salon, Strickland's Beauty Salon, Bowman's School of Dancing, Maus's Sports Car Shop, Borland's Dress Shoppe, andI found Peggy Sebastian busy at work in her office building.I stopped by Ramsey's Book Store and purchased a copy of my Nobel Prize winning book My Highest Goal. As I entered the new Reidsville High School, Mr, Bill Whitlow, principal, greeted me. Some of the teachers I found were: Ann Black, basket- ball coach, Bobby Butler, junior English teacher, Eu gene Walter, senior math teacher, Henry Douglass, Ronald Fennell and E. C. Merricks band Directors, and Otis Sizemore, history teacher, Robbie Hunt Barker is the telephone operator at the high school. Before going to the Y. M. C. A. where Donald Brooks was manager, I stopped by Gardner's Drug Store to find that Carolyn Smith had moved from soda-jerk to pharmacist. There I found much information about my classmates. After this short visit to Reidsville, I decided that if we were successful-or were to be partially successful-the old, old winds will blow gently over the land, the old, old thoughts will generously rewarm our heartg and there together, like William Morris in his EARTHLY PARADISE, we shall freely indulge our memories of the past. Memories vague of half-forgotten things, Not true nor false, but sweet to think upon. Betty QICW DeLancey 5' Prophetess aw--- Avis V w x F' Z Q W' 'Qs .f u Q1 3, . uf! rn,-K ,, if me' K 'x . Q' yx .
