The lights grow dim, the audiences become silent, the curtain rises on our first play directed by bliss Lorene Cralle. The setting upon the stage is the Reidsville High School. Here upon this same stage the students of the graduating class of '53 begin to play their assigned roles in Knowledge Come but VVisdom Lingersf' The leading role is played by Larry McDowell, the presi- dent of the Freshman Class, with other principal roles being assigned to LaVerne Benfield, vice-president: Bobby VVilkerson, secretary, VVayne Handy, treasurerg and Billy McKinney, cheerleader. The characters gain confidence in themselves as the curtain comes down on the first play. After a short intermission, the curtain rises on the second play directed by lyliss Annie B. Anthony and performed by the same cast, with the exception of a few. The leading roles have been assigned to different but capable members of the class. The role of presi- dent being assigned to Wayne Handy, vice-president to Don Comer, secretary to Ann VVest, and treasurer to Piuth VVillis. Two cheerleaders, Billy McKinney and Marlene Saunders, come from the class. Parts as foot- ball players are given to Boyd Hooper, Bobby Drum, and Bobby Vvilkerson. The girls' basketball team flourished with players Dot Lee, Shirley Cox, Linda Parker, and Peggy Hall. VV'e review this play with memories of many hours of labor and many worlds of joy and good times. The third play, under the direction of Miss Mary Susan Robertson, opens with joyous shouts from happy luniors returning to school after a short summer. The noise ceases as Buddy Wells, chief marshal, enters fol- lowed by other marshals Eddie Rascoe, Bob Young, VVilliam Trent, ,loan Grolf, Ruth Craddock, Betty Wray Lester, and Ralph Massey. Class officers enter led by Billy loc Mofhtt, presidentg B. A. Cox, vice-presidentg Don Comer, secretaryg Eddie Rascoe, treasurer. The play continues as the football team consisting of Leon Mullis, Edwin Gunn, Bobby Wilkerson, Boyd Hooper, Bobby Drum, Kent Lively, Don Comer, Larry Mc- Dowell, Dickie VVare, Buddy Vlfells, and William Trent pass before us. The football team went to the state finals cheered on by cheerleaders Billy McKinney, Mar- lene Saunders, and Shirley Apple. The girls' basketball team includes Dot Lee, 'lane Palmer, Linda Parker, Peggy Hall, and Shirley Cox. The boys' basketball team is sparked by Bobby lvilkerson, Don Comer, and Donnie McDonald, On the baseball team are Jimmy Boss. Pat Brady, Vvayne Isley, Bobby Wilkerstwn, and Don Comer. The climax of this play is the Junior- Senior Banquet which is held in the new gymnasium and cafeteria. As the last character fades out of sight, I Page Ninety-eight the curtain descends on a happy group of soon-to-be- seniors. As they come together for the presentation of this final play of the series of high school dramas, they meet as members of a cast who depend upon each other for their cues and who believe in team work. They are working as a team under the supervision of Miss Annie VVootton and led by their Student Council President, Ralph Massey, and their class president, Bobby Wilker- song ably assisted by vice-president, Wilma Saundersg secretary, Larry lVlcDowellg and treasurer, William Trent. The football team has a very successful season, winning eight, losing two, and tying two. Bobby Drum, Edwin Gunn, Otis Cobb, William Trent, Larry Mc- Dowell, Boyd Hooper, Don Comer, Bobby Wilkerson, Dickey VVare. and lack VVare are the seniors on the team. Bobby Wilkerson, Don Comer, and Otis Cobb are the team captains. Shirley Apple, Marlene Saun- ders, and Linda Parker, who are cheerleaders, are led by chief cheerleader Billy Mcliinney. The boys' bas- ketball team is led by Donnie McDonald, Bobby Wil- kerson, and Don Corner. On the girls' basketball team are Shirley Cox, Linda Parker, Peggy Hall, Dot Lee, and lane Palmer. The baseball team includes limrny Boss, Don Comer, Bobby Wilkerson, Wayne Isley, and Evan Schooliield. Now upon the stage one hun- dred gi1'lS and thirty-five escorts which make up the an- nual Beauty Pageant appear. Next is the Junior-Senior Banquet and then comes the most important day of all, Commencement. ' The cast of characters, in these dramas just reviewed, stands out in sharp contrast to ,each other. There are individuals whose strong personalities have made for themselves and for the class places which will be hard to fill, Such are the scholarship students, the athletic stars, and the social leaders. There are groups of people who, possessing the same characteristics, have made for their class a name. Such are the talkative ones, the giggling ones, and the noisy ones. As these characters have played their parts, there have been some heroes-and a few villains. They leave it with their audience, who has always been kind and generous in its verdict, to separate the sheep from the goats. It is true that some times these members have been sent to the office for forgetting their lines or being late to rehearsal, or missing their cue, but then there are other occasions when Mr. Anderson has smiled upon them and declared that they have been the most agreeable cast he has ever had, and that they have produced fewer failures in their performances than any previous group. They hope that with greater effort they will make greater drama in the future, and that their fame will be linked with that of their com- pany, The Class of '53. JANE PALM Ea, Prophetess N W .Sze L .yn l eCLI'Yl,5 7, STHTISTICS I shall never forget the dream that I had at the beginning of my senior year. It was very fantastic as most dreams are. The entire Senior Class of Rt-idsville High School it as going to New York City to attend the opening of the new play, Two Feet in the Aisle. One hundred ten of us went in a blue Ford, blue being our favorite color and Ford our favorite car. On the way, we studied either English or algebra and munched Hershey bars. Belore we left we had bought Life, Seventeen, and The Saturday Evening Post. VVe stopped at every short order place that even resembled Short Sugars to order either steaks or hotdogs. As soon as we arrived in New York we went to the hotel and since it was between 10:30 and 11:00 p,m., which is our regular bedtime, we retired. The next morning we arose sometime between the hours of 6:30 and 7:30 a.m., as we do at home. VVhile we ate breakfast, we read either the sports section or the funnies from the morning paper. After breakfast we visited Radio City to see Patti ' Te: 1-ncaa. ' I Page do her radio show. As a special favor to us, she sang our favorite song, You Belong to Me. That night as we dressed for the show we were careful to wear clothes to flatter our coloring. That might be best explained by saying that 6502 of the class are brownette, l6f? are brunette, 14W blond, 496. red, and ICQ, peroxide, not to mention the touches of peroxide: 4070 have blue eyes, 359i brown, 1Of7n hazel, 99? green, and 69? gray. Even though it was late Saturday night when we got home from the play, we all went to church on Sunday. Vile found that 4292 were Baptist, 31170 Methodist, llfff Christian. 80 Presbyterian, and BW other denominations. It was a wonderful weekend and we enjoyed it even if we were a bit sleepy Monday morning. It was a fantastic dream as one can see once it is told. Ir was a Monday morning dream since everyone looked so sleepy. All the seniors wish there were a chance of dreams courting true, especially this one.
