The setting was in the fair little city of Reidsville, the time, about 12 years ago, and the cast-you've already guessed it-was the senior class of '46, We were all inexperienced performers, but with trial and effort, we finally became, each in his Own way, stars. Most of us began this rise to stardom at Franklin Street School. We were separated in the second grade when two addi- tional schools, North End and South End, were added. We were reunited in the eighth grade, however. Several of the old members had moved out of town. but to take their places, we had new members whom we all learned to love. Thus as we graduated from Franklin Street School, so ended the first act of our play. The second act took place in Reidsville High School. We freshmen were the very greenest crop ever to be introduced. We soon became accustomed to our new way of life and entered into the activities with full swing. We elected for our officers in the ninth grade Walter Moore, president, Betsy Lea Ware, vice- president, Louise Johnson, secretary, and Bill Perry, treasurer. As sophomores, we were just out of this world. We were obtaining quite a bit of knowledge in spite of the fact that we didn't study too much. During that year, one of our members, Betsy Lea Ware, was elected secretary to the Student Organization. We were all very proud of Betsy. Without too much struggling, we became juniors. Absolutely nothing could discourage us when we became juniors. That year, we were well represented on the Student Council and in every other activity in the school. Arlon Brande was one of the co-captains of our excellent football team of which every one was proud. 'Sonny Newhall and Bob Montgomery were the co-captains of our basketball team. All of us looked forward also to the following year when we would be dignified seniors, After minor -acting for four years, we were at the peak of stardom. We were determined to out-do all previous senior classes, and we did accomplish quite a bit. Our class officers were Arlon Brande, president, Weldon Price, vice-president, Louise Johnson, secretary, and Jackie Kelley, treasurer. Our football team won the Class B Championship, and two members of it, Bill Perry and Arlon Brande, made all-shrine. Jimmy Thompson was president of the Student Organization, and several other members of the class were in it also. Bill Perry and Walter lVloore were co-captains of the boys' basketball team, and Owline Gregory was captain of the girls' team. We had a hardworking annual staff with Louise Johnson, editor-in-chief, and Jackie Kelley, associate editor. As for the third act of this play, we shall have to leave it to your imagination, but it will have to have a happy ending because -all the characters are stars now. How else could it end but happily and prosperously? So in order to give them their proper title, I shall name them Lord and Lady Character. Lord and Lady Character are very happy people. They never quarrel-or almost never-and then it is only that Lord Character thinks football is the best sport, and Lady Character thinks she likes basketball best. But both of them will settle for a grand afternoon of swimming. Lady Character is a very pretty young lady, and only weighs on the average of 120 lbs., which after all isn't very much, while Lord Character weighs 155 lbs. So you see Lord Character is no little thing, and that was why he won, with the help of a few others, the state football championship. The favorite subjects of Lord and Lady Character are English and typing, while sociology is brought in as ready second. Lord and Lady Character have a. career ahead of them, and so Lord Character thinks he will study in Carolina University, while Lady Character will go to Woman's College. They both like Duke and Mars Hill: so'they just don't know where to go. Lord Character usually takes Lady Character. every afternoon after school, down to their favorite refreshment counter. There he serves her with her favorite candy bar, Mounds, and buys himself a Hershey bar. He also buys a drink for them both. He alternates with his drinks since they both like Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola, and both like milk. One afternoon, he buys one: and the next, the other. While Lord and Lady Character are still eating, Lord Character puts a couple of nickels in the juke box. He plays their favorite songs,' Symphony and Always, sung by their favorite singer, Bing Crosbv. After Lady and Lord Character have finished eating, they both return to their respective homes for a quiet evening of study. Did I say quiet? Hardly, since Lady Character is thinking about what she will wear to the movie to which Lord Character is taking her tonight, and he is wondering how in the world he can get his dad's Ford for his date. He'd settle for the Buick, but Lady Character's favorite car is the Ford, and he'd better get it if he can. So as thc' evening draws near, Lord Character calls for Lady Character in a Chevrolet. He couldn't get the Ford or Buick, but after taking one look at Lady Character, dressed in his favorite colors, blue and red, he forgot about the car. Lord and Lady Character hurry to the movies, because they are nearly always late. Their favorite movie actor, Spencer Tracy, and actress Ingred Bergman are playing tonight. Lady Character likes Dana Andrews, and of course, Van Johnson, while Lord Character likes Esther Williams, June Allison and Betty Grable. Lord and Lady Character attend around two movies a week, and often after the movies, they drop in on the Teen-Age Club, where they hear their favorite orchestras, Tommy Dorsey and Kay Kyser, on the Turn-Table. Also they enjoy several rounds of dancing to the singing of Vaughn Monroe and Frank Sinatra or maybe Dinah Shore. - A And so, after a wonderful day. Lord and Lady Character bid each other goodnight. They are two ordinary Characters, made up of sixty-three regular boys and girls, who live for a glorious future. Our last and senior year Becomes a maze of wrinkled mem'ries, vague but dear: A little girl in pigtails, who sat across the aisle, And giggled like the mischief, when he returned her smile: The persevering teachers, Who shared our tears and joys, To make us men -and women, instead of girls and boys. O Life! You are a three act play, The end, is this, Of act the first, our childhood days, the days of bliss. And Time! Why fleet you so? If only we might be In this fleeting moment for Eternity. But We must turn to act the second, Life. We start Into the world with bright-eyed smile and happy heart, Each in his own path, branching from the one we came, For l'Manhood, not Scholarship, is Education's first aim. And so each act prepares us for the next, and last Will come the third, the final act, when We, the cast Shall exit from the stage, the curtain closed, and We Shall come upon a greater stage, and there shall see Our Director, who was our Audience, who did give Us a stage on which to act, a World in which to live. -HENRY SCHOOLFIELD Amdemzt Awards Saluratorian Valedictorian BETSY LEA WARE JIMMY THoMPsoN NMVIEW fel Q 1 I 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 I 1 1 '1 1 I 5 1 Guzkfe to Glamour flfolfeff X Q - f if f f X . President of Freshman Class. 1510170 gaze H956 Pffopheqf BY JACKIE KELLEY Tonight, May 30, 1956, Radio City is the scene of the decade's most spectacular play. Because of their outstanding progress, the 1945 graduates of Reidsville High School present a play written and directed by members of that famous class. Behind the set there is the usual hurry and confusion that accompanies a radio production. Edith l.aBruce and Jean Stadler, famous artists, are backstage supervising the make-up. They are nationally known for their painting. Henry Schoolfield, who is a famous journalist and lecturer, is preparing a column for The New York Times. The very latest coiffures will be used in this production. This is due to Mary Grey Harrison, who has one of the largest beauty salons in New York. Much credit goes to her capable assistants, Ruth Andrews, Virginia Evans, Juanita Talley and Betty Triplett. The physical education instructors, Owline Gregory and Modina McCall, are putting a group of dancers through a vigorous exercise. Owline is teaching back at our alma mater. and Modina is on the staff of a Junior college. Two nurses are checking pulses and temperatures. The strain is almost proving too great! Oh, the faces of those nurses are now visible and they are Marilyn Massey, who is head nurse in a private hospital here in New York, and Marion Mitchell, who is Marilyn's dietitian. Louise Johnson, a very efficient business woman, is having a bad case of nerves, since she is the director of this play. Betty McBrayer and Marianne Hall, who 'are famous clothes buyers, are Louise's assistants. Elbert Peters and Bobby Stanfield. photographers for Life Magazine are busy making pictures. Our Home Ec. professors are checking costumes. In the group are: Margaret Barlowe, teaching at Lenoir High, Betsy Ware and Vera Vaughn, teaching at Reidsville High, Becky Paschall, teaching at Bethany, and Dorothy Perkins, teaching at Greensboro. All of these young ladies have made quite a name for themselves. Geraldine Byrd. who is a model for Powers, has modeled all the costumes for this production. Frances Stephenson, who is a Red Cross Social Worker, and has made many trips overseas to entertain servicemen, is hastily reviewing her lines. In the offices backstage, typewriters are going at a furious speed, attending to the last minute business of the play. Hazel Johnson, Betty Craddock, Nancy McCall, Beatrice Roberts, Doris Norman, Mildred Trent, Hazel Dockery, and Doris Johnson are the very capable typists. Hazel Ross, Evelyn Gammons. and Helen Pegramf who are stenographers for the American Tobacco Company, have left their duties long enough to take short-hand from their many different bosses on this occasion. Caroline Allen, who is a private secretary to one of the great senators, is I.ouise's secretary for the present. Nadine Chilton, who is teaching shorthand in Reidsville Hi. is Nancy Montgomery's secretary now, Nancy, who is coach of dramatics at Queen's College, is trying to check everything at once. The engineers are working like Trojans on the lights and sound-effects. ln this group are Bob Montgomery, who is chief engineer for one of the greatest construction companies, Winslow Womack, who is starting his own business with Weldon Price and Ernest Paschall as his associates. and Gene Hardy, who is chief engineer in one of the larger manufacturing concerns. James Allison, a notable technician. is testing the sound equipment. Cecil Barber and Reid Montgomery, famous for their research' Work, are now working on a more clever sound effect machine. Bill Perry. head coach in Reidsville Hi, with his assistant, Arlon Brande. is showing Pete Apple and Richard Davis how to block that kick. Even though it is just a' play, boys. it's got to look like the real thing, states Coach Perry. John Hall and Robert Talley are trying to get some rhythm in the cheers that they are going to do. These four boys are now successful business men. Walter Moore. a surgeon of renown, is on hand to patch up whenever accidents occur. Another famous doctor is also backstage, and he happens to be Jimmy Thompson. Amid all the confusion, Jimmy alone is calm, observing the nature of others, since he is a doctor of psychiatry. ' Robert Walker, Morris Hill, Billy Robertson, and Elmo Shumate, all representing large warehouses. are donning overalls to portray a scene pertaining to their EFA Club. Bob Johnson is now in business with his father. He is the business manager for the play and Jane Womack is his secretary. Carolyn Dixon. teacher of social studies in Greensboro, and Professor Emory Ware, are checking last minute details to be sure that they have the correct dates and places. Elizabeth Wray. a concert pianist. is warming up her fingers, and Jackie Kelley, conductor of the orchestra is tapping, her baton for their attention. There is a fanfare of drums, a flash of on the stage, the curtain rises and the play begins.
