Sm !z'5lz'c.f If an artist were to paint a portrait or a photographer were to make a picture of the combined personnel of the class of '45, he would have this distorted picture. ' The class, combined, has a height of 3,150 inches, or 26224 feet: weighs 6,200 pounds or 3 tons, 200 pounds, and has a waist measure of 1,026 inches. The class also has 356,725 in War Bonds. The class of '45 has walked 7,200 miles changing classes during all its four years in high school. During after-school hours, they Went to a gather- ing spot called the Sweet Shop. Time spent in the Sweet Shop was spent eating, their favorite pastime, and listening to records from a juke box. Another place in which they spent quite a bit of time during after-school hours was the movies. They probably saw a movie starring Ingrid Bergmen, their favorite actress, or Van Johnson, their favorite actor, who appeals especially to the girls. They were always ready to settle for a movie starring their second choice of actresses, Betty Grable. At night, the class studied with the radio going full blast. The chances are they were really listening to Bing Crosby, their favorite crooner. Frank Sinatra was always at his job keeping the girls swooning, too. The members of the class spent an astounding amount of time studying! Their favorite subjects were biology, and for the girls, home economics. Physics and chemistry ranked next in order of favorite subjects. It seems that the class is scientifically inclined, studying all this biology, physics, and chemistry. Together, the girls of the class of '45 used 7812 tubes of lipstick a year, or 314 tubes during all their high school career. Using this amount -of lip- stick they could write Graduating Class of '45 so many times that, written end to end, they would reach around the World. Together, the boys of the class of '45 wear l62 ties a yearf Now that we have seen the actions, abilities, likes, and dislikes of the class of '45, we must leave them. The photographer, or artist, wants to add that he thinks the seniors in the graduating class of '45 are a fine example of Young Americans and that they will be very capable as the citizens and leaders in the World of tomorrow. -MARY LOU WILLIAMS, Statz'st1'c1'an. Ten short years ago we were just seniors in high school, and here we are all together again. It seems as if it were only yesterday that we sat in English class and kept Miss Ratledge on a far-fetched subject. because none of us particularly cared to study English that day. It may be very interesting to move around in the auditorium and see who is here and Hnd out how they have prospered since '45. There is a large crowd around the piano: someone is playing beautifully. Why, its Charles Somers, the great concert pianist. He has really made a name for himself in the musical world. Dorothy Anne Dudley and Lina Lee Hart are walking down the aisle arm in arm as they used to. Dorothy Anne is a very prominent Certified Public Accountant. and Lina Lee was a Court Accountant, but now is a good housewife for that certain one. Cadet Nurses! There are three from our class. and they are very outstanding. Katheryn Massey, Ethel Parks, and Anadel Jones are the three. Virginia Griffin is a Red Cross Nurse. It's a wonderful work. girls! No! I don't have any chewing gum. Elette. It seems as if Elette Massey is still craving gum as he used to ten years ago. He is very successful in his own business. Two good teachers are Henrietta Jones and Emily Giles. Henrietta is teaching a commercial course, while Emily is a wonderful handler of the third graders. They just came in the front door discussing their work. Well, you might have known that Mildred Lester would be standing in front of her favorite locker. 327. recalling those very pleasant conversations with??? Mildred has made quite a name for herself as a doctor. Proud of her: aren't we? After their limited career in the armed services. which was required, Jack Dixon, Ray Strader, Malcolm Talley, and Spencer Cross are all Hsitting on top of the business world. Robinette Meador who is a Home Demonstration Agent, is talking to those four who were to stay together all the time. By those four we mean of course. Mildred Clapp, Evelyn Kernodle, Annie Grey Breeze, and Wilma Howerton. These girls are happily married and in homes of their own. D. H. Huflines. Jr.. our press correspondent. has been looking for Jule Gwyn, our politi- cian. They are both widely known: so naturally they have a lot to talk over. Bill Richardson. our mechanical engineer. has just come in with Marilyn McCollum and Nancy Wray. We haven't seen Marilyn in ages because she has been busy as an X-ray technician at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Nancy Wray has been successful at Woman's College with her job as a Physical Education instructor. Annette Rice. Dorothy Chilton, Vivian Griffin, and Virginia Cantrell, some very prom- inent secretaries of Reidsville. are gathered around conversing with Vernell Brande, the best salesman that this high school has turned out in years. Marie Moore. the nation's top hit singer. is going down to the piano to prove to us now why she is so successful. Marie is one of our prize stars. Lena Wilson has a grand job designing clothes for the stars of the day. and Lorene Wilson happens to be one of the greatest. Back in '45 when there was anything to be drawn. every- one went straight to Lena, because she did it almost perfectly. lt's ever so often we go in to see our old friends. Jack Burton and Tommy Schaeffer. They run the largest and best grocery store in the city. Haywood Ferguson, an agriculture teacher and four super farmers, Cecil Apple. Donald Gilliam. Layton Gentry. and M. P. Robertson sprung up from our class. We wish Madeline Smith and Virginia Dixon would hurry up. Those good times that were had in the Hrst period Home Ecoonmics class will never be forgotten. And by the way. they use the knowledge they gained because they are two more of our housewives. Here comes Mary Lou Williams, late again. Mary Lou has been traveling all over the world with her companion, Virginia Saunders, and it will be very interesting to talk with them again. It seems as if everyone has come: so the program is about to begin. I'm so sorry you have to leave now: we wish you could stay to see our show. However, come to our next reunion ten years from today. So long! By CAROLYN MooRE. Page Fifty-seven HISTGRY OF THE CLASS GF A45 Twelve years ago our class entered the Reidsville public schools, and set out on the long job of learning the world and of letting the world learn of us. We were divided into two schools, one on Franklin Street, and the other on Lawsonville Avenue. We worked hard in the first grade, and, in due time, we were promoted to the second grade. During our second school year we went only part of a day. That was because the second fioor of the Franklin Street building was condemned, and there was not enough room for all of us to go a full day. So part of us went early in the morning, and stayed until twelve o'clock. Then that part went home, and the rest of us went in the afternoon. In the third grade we were still divided: this time into four groups: one in each of the new buildings at Franklin Street, North End, and South End, and the Lawsonville Avenue School which was remodeled during the summer between the second and third grades. School became more and more interesting and varied as we proceeded through the grades. It was the sixth grade before we were all in the same school. Eleanor Huske was valedictorian, and Tom Fetzer salutatorian when we finished the grammar grades. When we finished the seventh grades, we thought we were headed for high school. We were put off another year when it became apparent that the high school building was too crowded to allow another class to enter there. So we stayed in the Franklin Street building for the eighth grade, and finally in the fall of '41 we entered high school as freshmen. We were mystified by the system of classes used here at first. but it did not take us long to learn our way around the building, and to adjust ourselves to the routine. During our first year the Latin Club was organized, and Tom Sasser was elected president. Tom Fetzer was our class president for that year. The next year we advanced to the grade of sophomores. We were proud of ourselves and of the things we had accomplished the year before, and did not hesitate to let the fresh- men of that year know it. Jule Gwyn was president of our class that year, and he represented us well in the student council. We began to branch out. Many of our members joined the num- erous clubs, such as the dramatic clubs. debate club, library club, glee club, and the band. Our Junior year was marked by the noticeable absence of several of our members who had always been leaders of our class. Tom Sasser, Tom Fetzer, and Grove Cummings went to summer school in the summer preceding our entrance to school that fall and entered the senior class of that year, so that they could finish school, and prepare themselves better for entrance in the fighting forces of our country. Eleanor Huske and Bob Richardson had both gone off to other schools. Bill Richardson was our president for that year, and under his leadership we filled the gaps left by these students. The biggest event of the year was our Junior-Senior banquet. Robinette Meador was the chief marshal from our class, Her assistants were: Marilyn McCollum, Carolyn Moore, Annette Rice, Evelyn Kernodle. Dorothy Chilton, Nancy Wray, Virginia Ann Saunders, and Dorothy Ann Dudley. We entered school last fall with the determination to finish our high school days in a blaze of glory. We elected Vernelle Brande our president. Jule Gwyn was elected from our class to be president of the student council: Elette Massey was elected treasurer of the same organization. Marilyn McCollum, Robinette Meador, Carolyn Moore, and D. H. Hufiines. Jr. were appointed as chairmen of committees of the student council. The annual staff worked hard on our yearbook, THE RENOCAI-II, and turned out a book of which we are all proud. Marilyn McCollum and Virginia Cantrell shared the honors of co-editors of this book. Our class did not go in for sports in such a big way, but Jack Burton, Dt. H. Hufiines, Jr.. Thomas Schaeffer, and Bill Richardson represented us well on the gridiron. Our school was very fortunate in obtaining Kiker stadium, which was opened in our senior year. The Lions lost a hard fought game for the state championship to Laurinburg on Thanksgiving Day, by the score of seven to eight. Marilyn McCollum, Nancy Wray, and Henrietta Jones were our con- tributions to the girls' basketball team. Two of our classmates who started school when we did, have passed on to a bigger and a better world. They are: Bobby Siddle, who died in August of 1942, and Tom Sasser, who died in May. 1944. Both suffered from diseases which were incurable. Though they realized that they could never lead normal lives, they were cheerful at all times, and were a great inspira- tion to all. They are gone now. but they will never be forgotten. We will soon leave Reidsville High School, but we can never foregt the happy days that we have spent here. We have worked hard for the day when we would finish school, but now that that day is near we feel a tinge of sorrow in our throats, and deep down inside we know that we will miss the teachers and our many friends we are leaving behind. We enter the world realizing that we have a long road to travel, but confident that when we reach the end of the road we can look back on a life rich with success and filled with contentment for a job well done. -JACK DIXON, Historian. Page Fifty-eight LIFE IS A STAGE The time is 1945: The place is Reidsville High: The actors are the boys and girls Who've come to say Goodbye, Goodbye to the memories that bless and burn: Goodbye to the days that are gone: Goodbye to the teachers kind or stern. Goodbye, for We must go on. The stage is decorated right: The lights are glowing pale: The drama is the laughing fate Of those who greet life, Haill Hail to the future which holds the unknown.
