' :• iH Prexies 7 ) ' ' 1 ' Even though the odds seem against a pleasant and prosperous future for the seniors of the class of ' 44 — from the history you are about to read you will readily see that they will rough and tough the stormy path ahead with little danger of being dragged under by the ever sweeping undertow. The majority of our class occupied seats in the old Franklin Street Graded School for our first three years of learn- ing. There, under the guidance of un- derstanding teachers, we learned the fundamentals of the three R ' s, read- ing, ' riting and rithmetic. It was in our fourth year that a grade separa- tion took place. Two new schools were added to the cities property, plus the remodeling of Franklin. As separations from friends are usually unpleasant, this one was not different. But through football games, parties and the like, we went through the next three years in high spirits. Life really began for us in the seventh grade: for it was then that the whole flock was placed to- gether again in Franklin Street School. Graduation day was probably the most exciting; for we received our certificates. Mary Anne Young was valedictorian, and Wilburn Thorton, salutatorian. The Three Little Fishes, then top on the hit parade, was tops with us too. When September rolled around, we were all at last grown. We were in high school! We didn ' t need to wear any little green caps to show that we were new-comers; for our actions showed that quite plainly. However, it wasn ' t long before we caught on to the curriculum. Because of the progress our eighth grade president, Wilburn Thorton, made during his term of office, fresh- man executive Hugh P. Griffin had little trouble fulfilling his duties. The end of this year really called for cele- brating; for a large number of us had completed two full years of Latin — and passed. As usual, there were al- Page Sixty History of the WHEN WE WER] 0 lass of ' 44 ' OUNG AND GAY ways a few who were such ardent ad- mirers of dear old Caesar that they had to linger over a couple of years longer. Chestina Evans was one. James Jones won the fall election for sophomore president. It was dur- ing this year that Peggy Adams was crowned Miss Reidsville High. Hugh Griffin held the coveted position of treasurer of the student organization. Not only were we sophomores active in the student government, but the school ' s clubs too. Juniors now. and only two rounds to go until that diploma would be ours. Lois Roberts was high official that year. From the three presidential candidates from the sticks who ran in the spring primary for student coun- cil president. James Jones won. Many of us were on the staff of the school paper, Th e Renocahi. Our Junior- Senior picnic and square dance, and the daisy chain were the two out- standing events of the year. Nineteen hundred and forty-four! Just another year you say? Well, not to us, for we were at last seniors. We elected Wilburn Thorton. president; Carolyn Barber, vice-president: Treva Rascoe, secretary; and Robert Grogan, treasurer. Judy Ratcliff and David Small were our class mascots. Sarah Clark was editor-in-chief of our an- nual, RENOCAHI. Sara Anne Burton. Doris Royster, Lois Tucker and Susan Anne Womack were senior cheerlead- ers. Our basketball teams were good cagers; as Pearl Garrison and Johnny McAdams were their captains. We were proud of our football boys with Charles Nichols and Mustard Walker as co-captains. We tied for the Class B State Championship, and Charles Nichols and Tom Fetzer made the All-State Team. Many were members of the council and assembly. Thus, twelve years of glorious, ex- citing times have ended. Happy? Yes, because we have earned our diplomas, and sad because we ' ll probably never be in one group again. But, with heads high, we ' ll walk out of Reidsville High School with one aim in mind — that of helping win this fight for freedom of all mankind. Lois Roberts Page Sixty-one PROPHECY We are now in Reidsville. North Carolina, and it is the middle of May in the year 1954. The class of 1944 is gathered around, and, for once, this class reunion is not held in a football stadium. Although football still ranks tops in the Reidsville sports, we find the alumni of R. H. S. all inside the rrew Hugh P. Paladium, a huge hardwood building with space for square dancing. The prominent tobacco farmer James Jones is calling the set to the rhythm of an old-time hoe down by Elwood Coleman and his String Strainers. A few of the outstanding couples on the floor are ice-cream magnate Bobby Daniels and nurse Gladys Gammon, and chemist Grove Cummings and the new dietitian for Memorial Hospital, Kathleen Meador. There, beyond the music is that drygoods dealer, Mustard Walker, swinging the district superintendent of the Red Cross, Suzan Ann Womack. Playboy Wesley Burton, who arrived late as usual, has singled out the home economics instructor of W. C Sarah Clark, and they ease out on the terrace with cat-like quickness. Over in the far corner of the floor the lady lawyer, Peggy Adams, and her friend Dorothy Handy, the female postman, are arguing as to which of them gets to dance with the postmaster, Harry Cardwell. Not so far from them the public typist Bobby Lou Hundley is teasing warehouseman Johnny MacAdams for watching the floor show too closely and flirting with the chorus of ' 44 — Dorothy Bullock. Chestina Evans, Patricia Perkins, Grey Stanfield, Doris Royster, Nellie Ruth Walker, and Beulah Lester. After the floor show, the crowd dances to the beautiful Stardust arrangement by the famous pianists Lois Roberts and Lois Tucker. Bill Blaylock, manage-owner of the new motion-picture house of Reidsville, is discussing social affairs with Carolyn Barber, the art director of the million dollar picture, Came Back With The Wind. starring Leon McWhorter, Grey Tuck, Fred Gregory, and Irene Wall. The string band starts playing again, and Doctors Hugh Griffin and Harvey Chaney inter- rupt their discussion on the recent influenza preventive they discovered, and get two of the ladies, Winnie Apple and Benny Justice, out on the floor for a dance. A few of the housewives who made their way to the Paladium tonight are: Margaret Craddock, Doris Gammon, Virginia Brown, Louise Talley, and Mary Frances Stanfield. The mayor of the town, Wilburn Thornton, is just coming in. He is escorted by the news- paper edition. Robert Grogan and his staff typist, Marjorie Carter. Also with Mayor Thornton are the former WAC members from Reidsville: Katie Martin. Iris Shreve, Virginia Simmons, and Treva Rascoe. Mayor Thornton stops the dancing for a brief moment to present honorary awards to truck farmers Henry Brannock, Lucile Burton, Rhodalia Chapmon, Mable Gann, and Cletis Cook for producing in their gardens the biggest vegetables of the year. Farmer Brannock states, The suc- cess of my potato crop this year was due entirely to the new sun shades which I used to keep the hot sun out of the eyes of the potatoes. Joey Arthur, the swoon crooner of the season, has just moaned a few words of that old love song. Pistol Packin ' Mama, and the romantical socialites of the town. Lucile Mc- Michael, Ann Small, Irma Lee Chrismon, and Clara Mae Childrey have begun to swoon and fall out almost as efficiently as they could when they were younger. That couple clearing the dance floor with their athletic type of dancing is none other than the Olympic winners. Tom Fetzer and Sarah Ann Burton. They are still in fine shape. Albert Chandler, the local wholesale grocer, provided the food for this gala occasion, and it was pre- pared by his assistants, Yvonne Wilkes, Cleo Roberts, Georgia Hooper, and Eunice Inman. Interior decorators Marie Butler and Erna Nell Carter are to be recognized for their beautiful job of making the Paladium look and feel like old R. H. S. Make way for a crowd, don ' t shove, stand back, and let in that rough and ready, rootin ' , shootin ' . he-man from ' way back, Ezekiel Hull. After 20 years of being a runt. Zeke had a gland operation, and he is now a big physicist in size and quality. Behind Zeke, with his heels already clicking to the rhythm of the String Strainers ' version of that moving melody. I Ain ' t Gonna Work on the Railroads. comes Jack Scott, head of the wrecker service of the Lucky City, with a whole string of women such as Louise Faircloth. Pearl Garrison. Virginia McKinney. and Grey Parks. Business manager of the Reidsville paper, Mae Paschal, and publisher. Ruth Evans, take notes of this occasion with a write-up for the Sunday edition in mind. Raymond Ragsdale and Allen Seay are in charge of the television broadcasts from Greensboro, and they are catching the high spots of the night for their broadcast. Edith Talley sings a torch song for the tele- vision camera and Clifton Turner, with the aid of comic Wendell Owen, puts on a little skit advertising the electricity business. The slogan of the Turner-Owen Power Company is. Turner Owen your lights while you ' re Owen us dough, and we ' ll Turner you over to the police. As Charles Nichols, the Big Shot of the A. T. company lures contractor Neal Pegram to the punch bowl, we leave this merry crowd to their celebrating and enter into the dark, uncertain clouds of the future, not to return until another twenty years has passed by and the remaining few of the class of ' 44 shall meet again. P.S. — Anyone wishing information about the future see Prophet Hugh P. Winnie Apple Valedictorian Mae Paschal Salutatorian A GUIDING STAR No longer are we sheltered by The good old halls of Reidsville High. They ' ve been our refuge year by year, Our memory of them will always be dear. Out into the wide, unfriendly world, Our fate before us lies unfurled. Success and sorrow, joy and tears, They lie in store among the years. But we ' ll not falter with a sigh, We ' ll meet them all with heads held high! We ' ll put out knowledge to the test And give to the world our very best. Our paths will lead us all afar, But always, as a guiding star, The knowledge gained in high school days Will lead us to success and praise. Winnie Apple, Class Poet.
