ATHLETICS IN SUR SCHCDOL Development of the physical part of the body is of equal importance with the development of the mind. It is easy for us, in America, to overlook this fact, as we rush in our cars and aeroplanes from one place to another. Con- sequently, we Americans are becoming soft physically. Our physical educat1on program is planned to overeome this tendency to some extent Our play program from the first grade and up to the high school is planned with the definite aim to help the student to dexelop physlcally and socially We like to feel that our varsity teams in the high school head up this program The main purpose in plaving games is not to win but to help boys and girls dex elop into strong and healthy citizens with proper ideas in getting on with their fellowman CAPTAINS ALL r' t ! A crowd of about 2,000 is expected to nll this well-known theatre which is owned by our former class comedian, Roy Truitt, and the expected group of most importance will be our senior class members of I9-ll, who are celebrating their graduation which took place nfteen years ago. The crowds are arriving early and among these first to arrive is Leonard Thornton who tells me he's ready to show the film any time. He's now one of the best electricians and inventors in the state, Not far behind him I see Wilbur Mitchell, our former class president, who is now a G-Man. I wonder what brown-eyed beauty he has a case on tonight. Lee Richardson, Jimmie Cobb, Otis Sacrinty, and Lindsey Burton have put aside their aviation suits for tonight and are dyked out in tuxedos. It's almost unbelievable that they did away with their ground work and took to the air. Vifith them are their capable stewardesses, Jane Coleman and Jerry White, who are just as Ilirtatious in the air as on the ground. Ruby Wright is now descending from her car. She can't miss a minute of it because, after all, she is the editor of the New York Times. Who is that getting out with her? Now, I see. It's Ruth Clapp, Ruby's private secretary. Well, it looks as if the staff of Duke hospital has walked out tonight. I see Dr. William Franklin Rawley, dieticians Sarah Emma Hutcherson and Louise Stanheld, and technicians Edna Earle Williams and Doris Berry. Dr. Rawley may prescribe the proper diet for others, but we hear that he believes more in the Hutcherson diet for himself. Miss Berry is an assitant to a chiropractor as well as being assisted by one, Two of the state's best lawyers are now approaching the scene, Allen Gwyn, Jr., and Robert Markus. Yes, you guessed it. Allen is arguing Robert's questions. Allen may be a good lawyer, but he's an extra good chicken raiser too. He has one of the largest chicken farms in the South. Let's peep around these two and see who is following. It's our classmate, Raoul'd Price. Guess what he is trying to make Allen do-draw up a law in favor of bigamy! There comes a group of nve nurses with their most entertaining doctor, Henry Petuske, who now stutters only when he talks to the ladies. Marjorie Williamson, Elsie Elliott. Ada Lee Mitchell, Juanita McWhorter, and Margaret Saunders are healing hearts, I hear, but it is not ascertained whether they are curing the ill. Let's see who is driving up in this jalopy. Well, I'll declare. It's the never to be forgotten 3 Wise Guys, Julian Kelly, Frank Abbott, and Fields Scott. Fields has become very much attached to his work in the Aircraft Mechanic Shop located near Julian's automobile plant, which is the second largest one in the United States. Frank. our well-to-do civil engineer. has joined them for this premiere. With this trio is Dorothy Griffith, who maintains quite an influence ove' them. Louise Robertson, the journalist on a Philadelphia paper, has just arrived at the scene. With her is her stenographer, Rachel Hearn. They tell me that Louise really speels off the dictation to Rachel. Speaking of someone really talking fast, there's Mable Gwynn. She's the head secretary for Bernard Jones' high class clothing shop in uptown New York. Mable is chatting with Inez Strader, Dorothy Talley. and Catherine Price. her assistants. I often wonder which of the three comes out on top when they start arguing who will pin on the Boss' flower. Whitt Garrison and Elwood Smith have doffed their work-afday clothes in which they do electrical welding work and appear to be quite dressed up. Along with these hard working men is Maurice Gilliam who looks equally lost without his tools. The picture has been so widely advertised that even the preachers are putting on their top hats and attending the premiere. Among them I see Raeford Norman and James Harrison. who Page Fifty-six I l are preacher and assistant preacher of The Little Church Around The Corner in New York City. NVith them I see their consecrated Christian workers. Edna Rivers and Dorothy Watkins. I see those three skilled beauticians arriving, Virginia Hill, Elizabeth McCollum, and Annie Belle Brande. I guess they will closely inspect the hair coiflures which they originated for the picture. My classmate. Evelyn XVorsham. has just been chauflieured to the premiere. Since she is one of the up-to-date music critics, I know she will listen closely to each musical number tonight. Next are Mardene Price and Ruth Overby, who are starred in this premiere. There's no doubt about it-they are tops with their talented voices along with the graceful dancing which Deanie performs. Speaking of music. Anne Fitts is here with several of her most distinguished piano students. Here's Helen Frances Colley, who is still striving to be the private secretary of the movie actor, Errol Flynn. Three more classmates may be added to otir list who are present. Mary Elizabeth Slate and Frances Cross, who are Home Economics teachers in Kentucky, and Dorothy Cardwell, who is a Physical Education instructor at XVoman's College, James Snow, a construction engineer in South Carolina, is stepping out with his staff of secretaries: Marie Johnson, who is still talking about nothing: Rebekah Stanley, who is very proficient: Meredith NVebster ancl Gladys Van Hook. who are still quiet but daurttless. I hear someone whispering. Who is that 'tall, dark, and handsome' in the uniform? I'll gladly tell her that he is Rufus Mitchell who is now an alert forest ranger of the Blue Ridge Mountains. David McCollum has left his farm, which he has been successfully tending, to witness this picture tonight and join the classmates of Reiclsville High once again. I see Elwood King, the President of H, O. L. S. , Home of Lucky Strikes, the broad- casting station in Reidsville. NVith him are his secretaries Ada Fargis and Winifred Warf who are zealous radio workers. Pearlie Mae Capps has an office job with the local Nu Shine Company of which Carl Roach is the Advertising Manager. Here come those energetic housewives: Frances Scott, who is dressed in white and is with a White: Hilda Robertson, whose husband is an excellent farmer: Eloise Haizlip, who has proved to be a good housewife: Alice Martin. who has married and is living in Florida: Adelaide Pegram and Annie Pearl Scott, who live with their husbands on a big ranch out West. I suppose we can thank this next person coming up for giving us such grand weather tonight. It's Henry McCollum. who forecasts weather conditions for Washington and its vicinity. And here just behind him comes a girl who is as sweet as her delicatessen. Evelyn Carter. Somebody strike up the band! Just look at the uniformsf Long live the army and navy! John Pettigrew is walking very proudly in his sailor suit which gets him a sweetheart in every port. Although the Greyhound Bus driver's uniform which Thomas McCollum is wearing does not belong to the United States, I'm sure it must attract the girls in every town. Deane Collins appears very happy with her husband who is dressed in an army officials uniform. YVho is this smiling proudly at his wife and twin daughters as he strolls with them up the walkway? It's our good-natured Oliver Morris, and just behind him is Billy McCollum who believes in crossing his bridges after he builds them because his reputation of being one of the best engineers assures him that his bridges are sturdy. Another car is driving up and its passenger is almost late. I wonder who it can be? Just as I thought, it's Dorothy Pettigrew, the senior who had as her life ambition to be excused when late somewhere. At least she doesn't have to get tardy excuses from Mr. Lipscomb now. Did someone say that the curtain will go up in one minute? Oh mel I'd better go in quickly because I don't want to miss any of the music. I now return you to the studios of HH. O. L. S. , Home of Lucky Strikes. IDA BETH IVICCOLLUM, Prophet. Page Sixty-Hue I-IISTCDRY OF CLASS '41 Many historians have preceded me. doubtless many will follow, but none will have such a wealth of material to record. I hesitate to set my pen in motion to portray the activities of this notable group. Even now, I fear that no pen is really capable of justly presenting the fine achievements of this remark- able class. I can well remember that beautiful day in the fall of '28, when we clutched our mothers' hands and faced the wonder of our First day at school. First, we felt important, but how small we felt as we started up the walk to the building. which seemed to raise up so tall in front of us. However, we soon settled down to our A.B.C.'s and started making friends with our new playmates. We were on the first step of our ladder! We were merely children then, but we knew what it meant to be promoted. There are many, many things I would like to say but as not all the students who make up the class of '41 were in the same grammar grades, I know that the things that I can recall would only affect a few: therefore I will hasten on to the sixth step of our ladder. We looked forward to this year under the teaching of Mr. Jerome Douglas as we were the oldest or rather the seniors of grammar grades. Besides all the pleasures and joys we received this year, we also received a sad blow: we lost one of our dearest classmates, Katherine Grogan. I feel, and I know that the rest of the class does too, that we will always hold her in our hearts and minds as a beautiful dream never to fade. Our seventh year brought us new ideals, new teachers and last but not least, a new building. We all hated to see the old Franklin Street School building torn down, but we all joyed in seeing this new brick building. We were once again dominant characters of the grammar grades and it was during this year that we mastered our first exams! We were frightened at the name, but after it was all over we didn't think that they were so bad. We were honored this year by being the first to be taught by Mr. George Wingfield. Although he poured the history to us, he made a big hit with both girls and boys. Julian Kelly joined our group in our seventh year and was with us at graduation when we proudly received our Diplomas. Raeford Norman was honored with the title of Valedictorian while the title of Salutatorian was bestowed upon Evelyn Worsham. Thus ended the first phase of our school life. In the early fall of 1936 a large and curious group entered Reidsville High School. This, our freshman yea1', was one of mystery. Changing classes. schedules, looking for lockers in a crowded hall, Miss Wootton's English. Miss Cralle's math and Miss Yount's Latin class-all seemed to be mountains in our path. Somehow the path was cleared and we passed on. Dorothy Griffith was our first class president: Bernard Jones, vice-president: R. G. Newnam, secretary: and Raeford Norman, treasurer. Ida Beth McCollum and Mardene Price were the First to enter the Dramatic Club. In our sophomore years, which include the ninth and tenth grades, more of our group broke from their bashfulness to shine. Otis Sacrinty and Oliver Morris went out for football. Here I think I can pause to say that A'Bo and Bulldog proved themselves to be the best football material. John Grod and Otis Sacrinty joined the boys' basketball team with B. B. Throckmorton as manager while Sarah Emma Hutcherson and Dorothy Cardwell joined the girls' team with Doris Berry as manager. Raeford Normariv was circulation manager of the Renocahi and Allen Gwyn was the first of our group to enter the Hi- . Most of us succeeded in finishing Latin in the ninth grade. but some of our group were so attached to Miss Yount that they remained with her another year. Each member of the class, who struggled with Latin would show a twinkle in his eyes if Latin Grammar Speaks were to be mentioned. We, the Latin students, were proud to present this play at the city auditorium. Our junior year made us very proud, when we looked into the annual to pick out our own individual picture and say, That's me! At the first of this year we began to settle down to realize what vast fields of knowledge lay before us. It was during this year that we did most of our studying. Nevertheless, we, as juniors. succeeded in entertaining the seniors of '40 with a memorable banquet held at the Belvedere Hotel. During the dinner we were entertained by a quartet of girls and the band of King Arthur and His Musical Knights with Raoul'd Price as soloist. The marshals this year included six girls and one boy. These were Evelyn Worsham, chief marshal, Doris Berry, Ruby Wright, Ruth Clapp. Dorothy Griffith, Ida Beth McCollum, and Bernard Jones. As our junior year came to a close we proudly carried the Commencement Rose Chain down the aisle with the feeling that we were on our own senior threshold. Without the slightest intention of boasting I should like to mention some of the honors which have been bestowed upon the members of this Senior Class. The great honor of being the president of the student organization was given to Bernard Jones. Evelyn Worsham had the title of valedictorian and Doris Berry, salutatorian. Ruby Wright was selected editor-in-chief of the Renocahi in her junior year. and then again as editor-in-chief of the senior edition of the school paper. Dorothy Griffith was editor-in-chief of the annual. Three silver cups were won by three outstanding girls of our class. Ida Beth McCollum was awarded a beautiful silver cup in 1939 for having written the best essay in a contest sponsored by the 20th Century Club. The second cup was given to Dorothy Griffith for being Miss Reidsville Hi of 1940. The third cup was awarded to Sarah Emma Hutcherson, Miss Reidsville Hi of l941. David McCollum won the State Farmers Degree of North Carolina and also a trip to Kansas City. He was chosen as one of the best Future Farmers in North Carolina. The Seniors of 121 enjoyed an ice cream party for winning a magazine contest, and Sarah E. Hutcher- son, as the room leader also received a prize. This same class also won the magazine contest in their junior year with Alice Martin as room leader. The senior class as a whole felt that it had accomplished great things because it made more money on the senior play than any former class. The play which this class presented was a mystery-comedy, Nuts and Bolts. The football team in our senior year came through with Hying colors, aided by Rufus Mitchell's left-hand passes, and brought back the title of Class B. State Championship. I The numerous blue and gold letters won by members of our group show that ours is a well-rounded c ass. In behalf of the senior class I would like to pay a farewell tribute to those who have patiently guided our footsteps along the pathway of knowledge, who have encouraged us when we failed and rejoiced when we succeeded. The success of their labor in our behalf may show very faintly at the present, but thc future will reveal that their labor was not in vain. I close the Final page of our history with a feeling that is hard to explain-a mingled feeling of joy and regret, humbleness and pride: with love and respect for something-someone-that seems to be a kind of combination of our school and friends.
