At the close of the year the juniors took a very important part in the commencement exercises The marshals were, Elizabeth Mit- chell, C, L. Saunders, Margaret Jones, Betsy Lee Mayberry, Lucy Kiker, Genie McDonald and Frances Lee Eaucette. Like the fall of Rome, dramatic Betty Throckmorton slipped from the stage steps with a garland of ivy and roses trailing over her shoulder. The European civilization was far greater and more powerful than any preceding it. Dur- ing this empire people began a specialization They branched off into many different fields, unknown before. ln the eleventh grade the students in your class began to specialize in certain subjects preparing for fu- ture necessity Many new fields were opened. Manual training was introduced, and your school had a new work shop. Many of the stu- dents thought that they had reach- ed their Waterloo when there were various and freauent explosions in the Chemistry lab. Genie McDon- ald and Mary Jane Robinson like Beethoven and Bach strove onward with their music courses. You had your Leonardo de Vinci's in the persons of Jett Osbourne, Lois Simon and l-lelen Small Student organization was introduced into your school this year. Many members of your class took active parts in its careful planning and carry- ing out, The student organization sponsored issuing of your high school paper The RENOCAHI, Of course you are most interested in the American civilization. This is the highest civilization ever reached and it has greatly overshadowed that of the European. ln the twelfth grade we made the final preparations f S for our future, The turmoil that goes with present day elections could be compared to our selection of officers, superlatives, and an- nual and newspaper staffs, Many of the stu- dents who hold high offices in the school are from our classi President of Student Organiza- tion, C. L, Saunders, President of Senior Class, Elizabeth Mitchell, Publication Chief of School Paper, Claude George, Editor in Chief of School Paper, John McGehee, President of Debator's Club, Margaret Jones, President of Dramatic Club, Betsy Lee Mayberry, President of Hi- Y, Tom Fitz, President of Young Tar l-leel Farmers Chapter, Curtis Eitts, President of Band, Charles Scoggins, Captain of football team, G, W. Burgess, Captains of basketball teams, Marie McAdams and Buck Groff, Co-Captain of baseball team, Burnelle Cook Everyone enjoyed the Junior-Senior banguet this year very much, An- other important event was the bas- ketball tournament in which our . boys won first place, and the girls second place, ' M a n y personalities developed during the years spent in High School. You have your own Martha Raye, Miss Billie Betts, who gives lessons on Love at Demand. Next on your list is Benny Goodman Lewis and his swingaroos clarinet. Margaret Byrd as Jen- nette McDonald and Claude George as Gene Autry show great talent. CLASS HISTUBY We the l-listorians of l939, face a very difficult task in recalling the history of the past five years of this Senior Class, We wish that someone would help us. I will aid you in recalling your past, re- plied the Spirit of l-listory. The story of your past five years in l-ligh School can easily be compared to the five Great Empires of the World. l raise my scepter, You now are in the Land of l-listory. The Egyptian Empire was the first of the five. When your class entered the eighth grade, you started into an unex- plored world. You started out with a comparatively simple procedure. During the whole grade, you made one great contribution to progress This consisted of a firm foundation. You took the regular courses and mastered them. Teaching l-lelen McCollum enough Latin to pass the course could be classed along with the Pyramids as a Wonder of the World. The Egyptians liked ath- letic sports and so did you. Buck Graff seemed to lead the boys in football and base- ball. Betsy Lee Mayberry and Lucy Kiker took the honors for the girls, You were thrilled when Syble Ellington, the Cleopatra of your class, won the l-ligh School Beauty Contest. The Grecian Empire followed the Egyptian. The Greeks favored compulsory athletics. For two years both boys and girls had compulsory gym periods. lt was during this year that your class took a great interest in romance. Tom Fitz was your Paris and Frances Lee Eaucette your l-lelen of Troy. Like Alexander the Great you conquered your foreign problems, in your case, Latin and ancient history. The ninth graders, like the ancient Greeks, enjoyed drama and the producing of plays. Your origi- nal contribution was the presentation of the mock faculty. You should remember Betty Throckmorton's portrayal of M i s s Moffit, Margaret Jones as Miss Mecum, and Jimmy Waynick as Mr, Leggette. ln concluding this great Grecian Empire we might say that our algebraic knowledge could be compared to that of Euclid, the Greek discoverer of quad- ratic eauation. The Roman Empire reached a high peak, lt profited by the learn- ings and mistakes of the Egyptians and Greeks. ln the tenth grade the class built on the foundation laid in the previous years. They learned to abide by the rules of the school, and to profit by errors made be- forehand. At the end of this year , you Romans believed in athletics but L' seemed to favor professionals, Like- wise in the tenth grade after the passing of compulsory gym periods, the boys and girls began to work mainly upon one par- ticular sport, some basketball, some football. Our modern Mark Anthonys, Claude George and Margaret Jones, made the debating team this year, The Romans liked feasting, and music Your first Junior-Senior banquet was the social high- light of this year.
