Education Department Automotive Mechanics Carpentry The Auto Mechanics courses are intended to develop favorable attitudes, learn technical knowledge, and perform mechanical skills according to each stu- dent ' s abilities. Students get to understand the basic engine and other automobile systems in the sophomore year and then progress to advanced classroom and lab work and repairing cars in the junior and senior grades. Students get to develop desirable attitudes towards work and the quality of performance; to develop respect for fellow workers, supervisors, and customers; and to develop safe w ork habits. At the completion of this program a student is qualified to enter the automotive world of work as an entry level mechanic. The carpentry course is designed to teach students the fundamen- tals concerning woodwork, to include small projects and house framing and finishing work of houses. The course requires students to have a good basic knowledge of mathematics: reading the fractional parts of a rule, being able to calculate square measurments, and cubic measur- ments. The course is designed to be helpful to students toward building simple or complex projects for themselves, parents, etc., or for the student who is concerned enough, the course vnll prepare him for a job after graduation with a construction company. The course includes lessons of house foundations, house floor framing, wall framing, roof shingling, and roof framing. It also includes lessons of floor, wall, ceiling, and exterior finishing of houses. Organizations 59
