Reicher, D. D. , first bishop of the newly formed diocese of Austin, Texas, showed his interest in and concern for the Catholic youth of Waco by encouraging Monsignor J. J. Kearns to build a high school for them. As a very real proof of his interest Bishop Reicher gave 13 acres of ground, the site of the former St. Basi1's College in the northern part of the city, to the Cath olics of Waco for a junior and senior high school to be conducted by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Caron- delet. The name Reicher was this year placed be- fore the original name Catholic High at the request of parents mindful of a debt of gratitude to their bishop. BISHOP LOUIS J. REICHER OF AUSTIN, TEXAS OUR BISHOP AND OUR PASTOR Right Reverend P. A., V. A. , pastor of St. Mary's Church of the Assumption and director of Reicher High, opens the first faculty meeting of the year in his usual warm, friendly man- ner. Monsignorl. J. Kearns, OUR PRINCIPAL AND OUR COUNSELOR The duties of a principal are many and varied, but Sister Magdala remains composed through them all. Chief among her interests is the welfare - spiritual, educational, and phys- ical - of each faculty member and student at Reicher High. SISTER MARY MAGDALA, C.S.J. REVEREND MARK DEERING Father Deering is Reicher High's counselor-at- large, junior and senior religion instructor, and chief rooter at all athletic events. Ds-.., Father Deering, in the name of Monsignor Kearns, presents Sister Magdala with a portrait in color of His Holiness Pope John XXIII. The picture now hangs in the foyer of the school opposite a matching portrait of Bishop Reicher. , WW, 'Presided over by Monsignor I. I. RHS STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council of Reicher High provides by delegated author- ity an opportunity for students to preserve democracy by experienc- ing self-government. Each home- room sends its representative to the weekly meetings where with the Council officers they serve as a planning board to coordinate student activities. They promote leader- ship, school spirit, and social af- fairs on the all -school level as do the individual groups of officers for their respective classes or home- rooms. During the past year the Student Council sponsored the annual home- coming activities, arranged several assemblies - the first of which ac- quainted the student body with each of the school organizations and their purposes - gave a picnic for the faculty, and raised funds for the purchase of a beautiful cibo- rium for the new convent chapel. PARENT NIGHT A chance to see for themselves what their sons and daughters do five or six hours a day, five days a week was given to parents during National Catholic Education Week. Parent Night was attended by nearly 200 adults eager to inspect the work exhibited in each of the class rooms and to meet the faculty. What better career man to be among God's chosen ones! A student directs the attention of two guests to a vocation display depicting the activities of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Student guides conducted guests to the various displays and exhibits while the Home Ec class provided a delight- ful pause that refreshes in the cafeteria. Creative thinking is essential to progress. Aerospace Education as visualized by the Air Force would emphasize the need for more and more ideas. AIR FORCE DAY The U. S. Air Force last November afforded Reicher High students the opportunity of seeing an actual Bomarc missile, of learning how it is operated, and of realizing that the more ideas the better means that man's intellect is still one of his most precious possessions. Sister Magdala, principal, accepts a minia- ture Bomarc missile for the school's trophy case. Students listen attentively as an Air Force officer explains the basic principles involved in the atomic- powered rocket exhibited on the campus. On this occasion Monsignor disclosed to the seniors that Catholic High was to be called Reicher Catholic High in honor of Bishop Louis J. Reicher of Austin.
