Our weekly meetings were held on Wednesday morn- ings, a talk being delivered at each meeting. We have completed a year highly successful in fostering religious zeal among the members, and in hon- oring the Blessed Virgin through prayer and good works. J., our Moderator, had one of the freshmen give a short talk on the relation of the Blessed Mother to us in our capacity as students. This is a group, which, under the guidance of Mr. Edward Berbusse, SJ., voluntarily attends the Holy Sacrifice in the Regis Chapel one morning a week. At the Mass Holy Communion is distributed, and after it prayers are said in addition to a short talk given by the Moderator. The Guard is definitely succeeding in its purpose, to foster a special devotion to Our Lord in the Eucharist. Hence it is that in the close imitation and love of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacra- ment the ideal of the Guard of Honor at Regis is achieved. Address to the members OFFICERS Prefects Francis B. Cline James Greer Joseph Connors SANCTUARY SOCIETY ARLY in September, the Saint John Berchman's Sanctuary Society was organized with seventy-four members, the largest number in its history. ln order to better regulate the society, Mr. Francis X. Curran, S.J., our Mod- erator, divided us into three sections, each with its own prefect. Each divi- sion took its turn in serving on Friday mornings, in rotating order. Two members assisted the priest while the remainder followed the Holy Sacrifice in the sanctuary. ln addition to the Friday Mass, the society assisted at the First Friday devotions, and all the other ecclesiastical functions at Regis. James O'Malley placed second in the finals of the Journal-American Oratorical Contest. Bernard Lavin was one of the best speakers in the Ford- ham Oratorical Contest. These poems have been studied and loved by men of all ages, and it has been the primary purpose of the Homeric Academy to instill in its members some appreciation of the pure serene ot the Blind Bard. Meeting twice weekly, the six members of the Academy, with their Mod- erator, Mr. Walsh, S.J., would translate outstanding passages in the lliad of Homer, and then would discuss the beauties and structure of the Homeric poems, and of epic poetry in general, These meetings were conducted with an eye towards the Public Symposium of l94l , held in May. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate before representatives of the faculties and stu- dents of universities, colleges and high schools in and about the Metropolitan area, the ability of the high school student to appreciate and understand to some degree the greatest work of Greek Literature. The Bard composed The Comedy of Errors in his youth and it is full of the vigor, vivacity and naivete ofthe poet's age, This year, two pairs ot twins, ever-present and ever delightful, have graced the Regis stage and trolicked to the tripping wit and humor with which The Comedy of Errors is saturated. Bernard Lavin again found a mighty role awaiting him, and with many past successes under his belt, once more triumphed in the role of Antipholus Shca as Antipholus of Ephc Aewcon tveloie the Duke ,Q ,J Av W Ts. David Shea, unknown on the Regis Stage until this year, made Ephesus his oyster, and emoted with all the mobility of a twin who was done wrong. To complicate matters, Shakespeare, in a frivolous and slap-happy mood, proceeded to place another pair of silly similarities in his fond creation and let more errors gush from his immortal pen. The second pair, as you re- call, consisted of servants to the two Antipholi, both named Dromio. Steo and Braham, both sophomores, played these two parts, and with their prank- playing they may be said not merely to have inspired applause and commenda- tion, but in fact to have stolen the show, The pompous Duke, dispenser of justice, was a part played by Eric Compton with all the feeling and lack of feeling required. Luciana 'Flanncrw and to Joseph Landy for his excellent portrayal of a seven-line character who ap- pears in but one scene, the erratic and self-elevating Dr, Pinch. And we must mention the splendid enactment of Aegeon by James O'MalIey, played with the restraint and ease of a polished actor, Joseph Flannery did a splendid job in the performance of Luciana, Adriana, the shrewish wife of Ephesus, was well played by a freshman find in the person of Richard Walsh. The two performances were, as usual, given on Friday and Saturday nights. The auditorium was well-filled and the play was we-ll-received by, we can modestly say, an amused and delighted audience. As in previous 'A is , A I A' ' 'M V -sf L' !', ' Antipholus 'Levin Colwell, Lavin, Shea Lynqhy Lawn' g,,-nmons years, two preliminary enactments were presented in the week preceding the main performance, one to the nuns from the parochial schools of our city, and another for the parochial school students. After three years of fruitful direction by Mr. Costello, SJ., the task was taken over this year by the former business manager of our Society, Mr. Walter, S.J. The spring brought forth, as Regis tradition has it, a modern play. After much study and deliberation, Mr. Walter, S.J., finally chose Nothing But The Truth as the selection. This play is a farce, steeped with situation comedy from curtain to curtain. Perhaps you recall the Italian in Brother Orchid, a character well- hidden behind a hairy, mangy beard. This year, the same John Colwell un- veiled his handsome countenance to feminine eyes as he appeared in the role of Bob Bennett, a hero born and bred. Bernard Lavin, impressible as ever, at last trod upon the boards as a knave, a villanous and wretched rascal. l-le was none the less effective minus his benign smile, as was proven by the melo- drama-like hisses he received in the children's performance. David Shea also descended and partook of the bitter role of knavery, playing the part of the pragmatic broker in a professional manner. The last of the three vil- lains is the only one who has in all his Regis performances played the bitter role of the unrelenting scoundrel, Charles Simmons. The body itself is composed of the presidents of the Senior and Junior classes who act as the agents of the whole student body in drawing up resolu- tions for the approval of the principal. We have been very fortunate in ob- taining the cooperation of Father Edmund Cerrute, SJ., our Moderator, who lends kindly advice while presiding over the organization. Three times he broke the record for individual scoring per game. First in the Georgetown scuffle scoring 27 points to break Pat McCarthy's record of 26. Second, with St. Michael's, he notched up 28 markers and last he established the new record of 33 points in the lona contest. Barnard also felt his might when he tallied 32. l-lis total scoring for the season amounted to 280 points. Frank McDermott is one of the cleanest and hardest players we've seen on the courts this year. Proficiency and efficiency in his guard position seem- ed to be his motto, On more than one occasion, he displayed his valuable ability as a passer, This fact has been acclaimed both by his opponents and his teammates, l-lis best exhibition was in the game with Barnard where, while dribbling down the court, he hurled a lateral pass behind his back to Joes Frank can truly be proud of his athletic standing at Regis. Tom Kelly, the last of this departing trio, showed his athletic qualities by stepping into the fray when the heat was on. Both in the Fordham and Georgetown games, his work in recovering the ball under the basket seemed to be the spot for which he was best fitted. This style of play is an art in itself. Nick Treanor, proved himself to be a great court general. To him we say 'good luck' next year. Dead-eye Duff comes in for a word of praise as evidenced by his play in the St. Peter's games. Pat McGahan, John Tarpey, Steve Buckley and our rookie, Bill McLorn comprised our second team and were instrumental in warding off some of our opponents' attacks. Finally, we end with a good word for Al Mazzia and Bob Morris for their able assistance and efficient cooperation in the capacity as Managers, to Father Cerrute, S.J. for his valuable aid to the team, and last to Coach Ken- nedy who rightly deserves the honor bestowed on him by Regis students when they boast of him as the best high school basketball coach in the City. JUNIOR VARSITY HIS year, the able Mr. Purcell turned put another splendid, fighting Jayvee which now looks back, with pleasure, to a generally satisfactory year. Confronted with an unusually heavy and extensive schedule, THE OWLS, after dropping their opener to Benjamin Franklin 37-20 on our home court, also fell victims to a hard-fighting quintet from Rice, I7-IO. However after suffering another loss before that onslaught of La Salle Academy, 37-25, they retaliated and seemed to return to form by trouncing the traditional rivals, St. Peters. Against Fordham, at the huge Fordham gym, the OWLS Outplayed their rivals winning a tight battle I8fll. They followed this up with their third straight victory, downing Rice 26'l6, thereby running up their highest score of the season, This decisive victory completely avenged the defeat suffered earlier in the season at the hands of the same Rice Team, Against La Salle, our Jayvee hoopsters were decidedly off, and they went down by a count of 22-I4 The next week they travelled to Iona only to meet defeat in a closely-fought, exciting battle by a one point margin I6-l5. However, THE OWLS came back in grand style and closed their season in a blaze of glory by defeating Georgetown Prep 23-6, on the home court. The next game with Xavier was a thriller with the cadets gaining the winning points in the last seconds of an overtime period 27-25. Having obtained the necessary experi- ence in these two games, a fast-moving freshman team conquered their next three opponents, Fordham Prep, Columbia and Brooklyn Prep. The next game saw the Wrens go down defeated to St. Bernard's. In a return game with St. Ann's, the freshmen were again set back, 24-27. After this came another victory over Brooklyn Prep 29-l4 in one of their best games played all season. ln the last game of the year, the Wrens completely vanquished Columbia 45-5. The high scoring of big Jake O'Connell together with the smooth and clever ball-handling of Holland, Featherstone, Murtagh and the rest of the squad gave the freshmen a fairly successful season with six defeats and five victories. H436 The team is rounded out by a promising but inexperienced outfield. Red Fryer, a newcomer, patrols right field. Keeping him company in center is a promising junior, O'Connor. Ed McCoy, the only veteran of the three, plays a neat left field. ln several pre-season games, this second edition of the Regis baseball team showed plenty ot power and diamond savvy, Mike l-lanrahan, a very dependable moundsman last year, showed speed and poise that seemed to predict a successful season for the Regis stalwarts. As there is a guiding influence in every organization, so there is behind the Regis team a man to whom all credit ot forming a good team is due. Coach Purcell has done a splendid job in the management of a club that came into existence only two years ago. Before the swimming sea- son started, the outlook appeared none too bright. But the team performed admirably considering that bad health kept many of the keymen out of the meets. The big guns in the Regis attack were co-captains Morrissey and Savage, who managed to score most of the points. The most consoling thought de- rived from this mediocre season is the fact that only one keyman, Joe Fallon, will be lost to next year's squad through graduation. Great things are expected from next year's squad from the team which undoubtedly has gained much valuable experience from the meets of the past season.
