Memorles DON KAUFFMAN 39 LD Pat School sat on the hard oak bench and stared at the bare whlte xx all 1n front of h1m It was the month of May and 1n June lt would be all over It was too bad It had to end but there were many boys and g1rls who were glad to see the last of hlm As Pat sat there he thought over the many thlngs he had accompllshed slnce old age had be un to creep upon h1m Old Pat s basketball team had done very well durlng the year They had returned from St lNorberts wlth thlrd place honors I add1t1on two of h1s boys W916 placed on the All Tournament Team Rafferty and Caton who won forward and center posl tlons respectnely A feellng of lonellness came oxer h1m at the thought of partmg xx 1th the g1rl he had adopted durlng the year He had accepted by all He loved her as d1d every body that knew her and to show h1 ap prec1at1on he had bought her the finest green and whlte dress money could buy The wall ahead of hlm took on a s'f1ll more radlant glow as he thought of the debate team whlch belonged to hlm They had fought hard for hlm all year but lt wasnt unt1l the Northeastern VVISCOIISIII Cathollc Debate Tournament that they had taken number one honors He had been proud that day and he could thlnk back XVltl'1OLlt sorrow now although there were only a few weeks left before the end He would d1e IH June l1ke thousands of h1S klnsfolk but he loved those memorles They made h1m feel warm 1ns1de and the wh1te walls of the Month of May whlch had been named the Death Block of Mr School d1d not seem as dreary as before He could stlll laugh when he thought of the plays whlch the SCHIOFS had presented They had been a blg success and every one had enjoyed them There was one event he knew he would enjoy before the fatal hour The clas play was to be the grand final 1n the entertalnments g1ven at h1s humble dYV8ll1I1g The senlors were golng to present Blg Hearted Herbert ln June Herbert Kalness a self made buslness man who lnslsted that hlS famlly be brought up accordlng to tradltlons would be played by John Ba t Hls daughter Patr1c1a Smlth would become engaged to a Harv ard man James Klernan and when Herb erts YVlf9 Geraldine Eldrldge entertalned the Harvard men she could see Herbert golng nearly out of h1s mlnd w1th rage Old Pat felt sure that thls exent would relieve h1s burdened mlnd for a few hours The annual Jun1orSen1or Prom was another event Pat would attend before June It had been rumored that Davld McSorley the prom klng would be accom would be James Caton accompanled by Elaine Kunz Thls prom was always the outstandlng ex ent on h1s soclal calendar The cell seemed to grow smaller and more suiocatlng wlth the passlng of every mlnute It was a shame that every June the lxfe of every school had to come to an end He wlshed that h1S declamatory wln ners could be wlth h1m to cheer hlm up There was smllmg Pat Smlth who had tak en the first place award ln the humorous d1v1s1on It would haxe encouraged hlm to hear John Basts thrllllng Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde for wh1ch he had been so very much applauded ln the dramatlc readmgs He was thankful that h1S l1fe was not the dlsgraceful story that Hyde s was He knew that Gerry Eldudge who had won the Flemlng Trophy could agam pull at h1s heart strmgs wlth Mothers of Men There was nothlng to do now but Walt In June It would be all over and he would be forgotten by all except perhaps the Senlors who would never agaln enter the fCont1nued on Page 331 9 9 Q ' . s Y . . - ' ' ' , . . . . i - gg ' I!
