HE t1me 9 30 the day Saturday the place Tom s Grocery James and I usually spend the day at the store Tom a good natured soul tolerates us At ten o clock the second load of grocerles departs from the store to be conveyed to the respectlve customers humble domlclles About fifteen mlnutes to ten Tom says Why don t you guys make yourselves useful as well as ornamental? Put up some orders Thxs ranks hlgh ln our catagory of plea sures It s great sport welghmg out a pound of sugar and ten cents worth of cookles W congratulate ourselx es on the fourth of a cent profit we make for our dear fr1end Tom But our trlumph IS short llved the reason be1ng that a mlddle aged gentleman has come through the front portals of Tom s D1spen sary of Eatables ThlS gentleman comes to a halt before the C0Ok16 case opens the cover and plucks up a luscxous chocolate covered morsel He contlnues walkmg around the store mast1cat1ng th1s t1db1t Agam he comes to a halt before that place and another of the same proportlon 1S conveyed lnto the yawn ln cavnty Thls contlnues mdeflnltely untxl finally fully a dozen of those temptmg cook1es are devoured In the end he says Tom bet ter glve me a dlme s worth of cracker After th1s moocher has departed Tonf looks at the hole made 1n h1S thlrty cent a pound cookles and sadly shakes h1s head But he IS hardly through mutterxng lmprecatlons at and about such humans when IH walks a customer He talks about the Weather and then orders a bottle of mllk and a blt OL cheese and ends by saylng Tom put a nlckel s worth of ICB cream ln three cone for my klds w1ll you? After thls speclmen has left Tom looks pale and drawn and 1n no mood to b trlfled wlth James and I then get busy and try to make up the losses We throw caut1on to the wlnds and lgnore the clouded look on our b9H9f3CfO1 s face and proceed to rouse h1m by pok1ng fun at hmm 7 Patience, Tom John Bast, 38 Everythlng goes well for awhlle untll he says John how much do you owe me? I tell hlm How long have you owed lt? he contlnues mercllessly By thls tlme We are sl1d1ng to the rear door and freedom And as we drlft out of slght and hearmg he mutters some thlng about the varled llfe of a storekeeper One, Two, Three, Shift Kathleen Roach 38 To anyone who has never rldden to Shaw town on a bus between four and four thlrty ln the afternoon this may seem exaggerated and untrue but I feel qulte sure that all the Shawtowners W1ll agree with me Upon entermg the bus flf one succeeds 1n dolng so for lt 1S already packed to the ut- most capacltyj It IS dangerous to even try to get your bus fare out for It IS hard to tell lnto a person objects to havlng a stranger feel around ln h1S pockets After dropp1ng yours for someone else sl fare lnto the box the usual procedure IS to find a seat and s1t down but not on a Shaw town bus In fact one may conslder hlm self qulte lucky lf he has standlng room the reason befng that the students from the Senlor Hlgh School the Junlor Hlgh School and St Patrlck s all occupy the same bus It is not an unusual slght to see as many as four persons s1tt1ng1n one seat not because It IS thelr deslre to Slt three deep but because they were pushed there by the mob whlch has en tered Why only tonlght I was pushed on the lap of a man whom I had never seen be fore The worst part of It IS that It IS 1m posslble to stand up agaln once you have been seated In thxs unbecomlng manner for there are probably txo or three people standmg where you once were CContznued on Page 481 N !
