ON ST666 A Dl.6Tf0l2m Un the Stage and Platform Elalne Chrlstlanson, 37 St Patrzck s debate team was the wmner of the Western Cath olzc Debate Conference Debate and Debating F you th1nk thls was just an ordlnary club you are wrong In the first place lt was composed of just twelve members mcludmg Father Deeny our teacher We met every day at 2 35 or elpfhth perlod and oh the fun we had The hardest taslf Father Deeny had confrontlng hlm was that of gettmg the orlglnal eley en Cas they mlght be calledl down to brass tacks or IH other words SSFIOUS tlllllklllg' Debate class was not conducted wlth the usual formahty found 1n other regular classes Seems to me that everyday each person chose a new seat IH cludlng Father Deeny who rarely sat at his desk up at the front of the classroom Before class would ever begln we would usually talk of the events of the day or com cusslons would come the wx 1se crackmg All were good sports though and w1ll1ng to take a llttle rlbblng as well as glve lt all of Whlch was meant of course IH the best of fun Father Deeny had started out wlth a defin lte ldea as to how he would teach debatmg for the year He had purchased a number of textbooks on the subject of good debatmg and had counted on g1v1ng us a number of lectures on the subject Howexe l1tt'e was accomphshed along elther lme The first few days the textbooks were all rlght but they were rather dry and mterest soon lagged However we read from them durmg class tlme Th1s contmued for about the first slx weeks of school Then came report cards and much to our astomshment we had re celved marl s ln debate but they weren t any thln to Wflte home about I th1nk the e ma ks brought one good result dlllgellt study on the part of the debate students for the next week But It was too good to lwst 19 their m1sch1ev1ous characers got the best of them and debate class soon resumed lts for mer attltude much to Father Deenys d1s appomtment or was 1t'7 I m lncllned to be lleve he enjoyed It as much as we d1d One day Father Deeny calmly announced we would have to start wrxtmg a few speeches on the subject because we of St Patrlcks were go ng to sponsor a practlce debatlng tournament for about thlrteen schools and St Patmck s must part1c1pate The next week was an exceptlonal week mdeeel especlally about e1ghth perxod ln the debate class room If one had looked 1n one would have actually seen the orlglnal elex en buslly ponderlng over books and Father Deeny calmly slttmg at hxs de k read mg h1s brevlary wlth a contented look on h1s face The reason for all the study was that the tournament was only one week aw y and ln that tlme speeches had to be wrltten and learned The day of the tournament arrlved Schools from the mam towns around our c1ty came to partlclpate and among them were the orlg 1nal elex en ready to put up as much fight as anyone else The tournament went off we Next week everybody came to school Wlth ldcas for new cases some good some not so good From tournament tlme on untll about the second week ln December the debaters were unusually busy for speeches were bemg wr1t ten and rewrxtten for the commg debates One week we made a trlp to Stevens Pomt We debated Wlth a glrls academy and the hlgh school of that clty They were dec1s1on debates We won one and lost one Here I mwht mentxon one tlung for YVIIICII our debate team was known lt was thexr .
