Rolling in and carrying away all that they reach— all the cherished moments, treasured memories, fond scenes, dear friends. Nothing is safe; nothing stems the tide of the ceaseless roll and wash of time. To form a breakwater which will hold the events, moments, happenings of the school year; to hold them as if in the frozen stillness of a great glitter- ing white tower, is the aim of the 1956 RANGER. These are the moments one longs to remember; these are the events which forever close the door on the last of the boy; these are the times which open the door on the newly molded man. These are great days. These are the recordings of the 1956 RANGER. 7 fc REGIS COLLEGE on the crest of the west Denver, Colorado 1956 EDITOR Frank Sferra ASSOCIATE EDITORS James O ' Connor Jack Treloar SPORTS EDITORS Henry Close John Kirchner PHOTOGRAPHY Roman Borgerding Assistant Jim Creamer ADVERTISING Frank Sferra Tim Malone LAY-OUT EDITOR James O ' Connor ' ■ ' -■ ■■■ [ ' ' ■■ ' - ■ ■••■ ■•.- , ij iiiiifillfriltu. - .■■■•■. r!i. A x: , ,„ — L«k - SAINT IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA DEDICATION NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY-SIX HAS SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE FOR THE MEMBERS OF REGIS COLLEGE AND OF ALL JESUIT SCHOOLS. FOUR HUNDRED YEARS AGO ONE OF THE GREATEST MEN OF THE CHURCH DIED, AND IT IS MOST FITTING THAT IN SOME SMALL WAY WE COMMEMORATE THIS ANNIVERSARY. THROUGH THIS YEARBOOK REGIS SHOWS ITS ESTEEM AND RESPECT FOR THIS ILLUSTRIOUS SAINT. IN YEARS PAST THE BOOK HAS BEEN DEDICATED TO A MEMBER OF THE FAC- ULTY, BUT O UR STAFF FEELS THE NECESSITY FOR BREAKING THIS TRADITION IN REMEMBRANCE OF THE FOUNDER OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS, SAINT IGNATIUS LOYOLA. THIS SAINT CAN BE AN INSPIRATION TO ALL THOSE WHO ARE TEMPTED TO LOSE HOPE IN THE INFINITE MERCY OF GOD AND RESORT TO DESPAIR. IF WE REACH THIS STATE, ONE PRAYER OF SAINT IGNATIUS CAN BE OUR AID. Teach us Good Lord to serve Thee as Thou deservest; To give and not to count the cost; To fight and not to heed the wounds; To toil and not to seek for rest; To labor and not ask for any rewards; Save that of knowing that we do Thy will. Prayer of Gratitude There is a world-wide struggle to capture the mind of youth. Through youth movements foreign dictatorships aim to perpetuate their pernicious doctrines. In our own country youth is exposed to these poisons which can de- stroy our hard-won liberties. Protection should, therefore, come from the leading universities and colleges of America. Regis College refuses to subscribe to the doctrine that academic freedom may be used as a pretext to teach systems which destroy all freedom. We proudly boast that we have always taught and will continue to teach the following creed. We believe in God. We believe in the personal dignity of men. We believe that man has natural rights that come from God and not from the State. We are therefore opposed to all forms of dictatorship which are based on the totalitarian philosophy that the total man belongs to the state. We believe in the sanctity of marriage and of the home — the basic unit of Civilization. We believe in the natural right of private property, but likewise that private property has its social obligations. We believe that Labor has not only rights but obligations. We believe that Capital has not only rights but obligations. We are vigorously opposed to all forms of racialism — persecution or intolerance because of race. We believe tliat liberty is a sacred thing, but that law, which regulates liberty, is a sacred obligation. We believe in inculcating all the essential liberties of American De- mocracy, and take open and frank issue with all brands of spuri- ous democracy. We believe, briefly, in the teachings of Christ, and we, therefore, hold that morality must regulate the personal, family, economic, political, and international life of men if civilization is to endure. nshop of Denver MOST REVEREND URBAN J. PRESIDENT, REGIS COLLEGE PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE St. Ignatius Loyola founded the Society of Jesus at a time when the Church was reeling under the onslaughts of its enemies; twenty years later, as the Saint breathed his last, the tide of heresy had been checked, and the banner of Christ the King was being borne from victory to victory. The great idealist, the practical educator had well deserved the encomium of Christ: Well done! Four hundred years later, we see the close of another year at Regis, another year of serious student endeavor inspired by the ideals and methods of Ignatius. Another graduating class assembles on the heights won by our Saint and his followers, heights which yield a clear view of the never-ending battle that goes on for the loyalties and the very souls of men. The objective before the graduates is that of the Soldier Saint: to accomplish God ' s Greater Glory, and to widen the sphere of Christian influence in a cynical and despairing world. Our graduates must feel, as did the youth of Ignatius ' day, that theirs is a very high and very bright ideal, one that inspires a passion and a determination to push through all obstacles and break through all barriers when Christ gives the signal to advance. Victory is as- sured; has not Our Captain promised? But hardships must be borne, and dangers braved, and wounds sustained. It is only thus that we, too, shall merit those blessed words: Well done, good and faithful servant; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. fcL (UsJ ADMINISTRATION REV. LOUIS G. MATTIONE, S.J. Besides these regular Masses the Society has men serving the Stations of the Cross, Benediction, and the special Masses whenever they are needed. Officers and moderator, Marty Hart, Fr. Singleton, Chuck Carter, and Gene Sweeney. The members of the Society listen intently to an address by Bishop Sullivan. More intent listening by the St. John Berchman ' s Society. The Society ' s objective is that no Mass be said on the campus without having an acolyte present to assist the priest. It gives the student members a chance to better assist at all religious exercises. The integrity of the Society is shown by its large membership. There were many times in the course of the year when there was more than a little doubt as to whether it would ever become a reality. At one time during the year we were seven months behind in a shipment of copy. There are many things in this year ' s book that are not as they should be, since we realize this fact there is no need for you to remind us of it. Special thanks go to the wise and understanding counsel that could come only from Rev. John J. Quirk, S.J., our faculty moderator. This one man, more than anyone else, is the reason that the Ranger of ' 56 is a reality. We also thank all those people who volunteered their assistance and then disappeared. The staff of this year ' s book is the smallest (in number) that we have ever had. This year ' s book was the latest book that we ever had, and will be considered by many the worst book we ever had. Without the constant help of the few members of the staff that we did have we would never have been able to publish this year ' s Ranger. To Jim O ' Connor and Jack Treloar go our heartiest thanks. Roman Borgerding ' s pho- tography is probably the best of any that we have ever had. There are many more people who deserve our thanks, but we are confined by lack of time and space and cannot mention them individually. All we can do is to give a Thank you to all who helped us. In conclusion we ask that you overlook all of our mistakes and give us a chance to improve in the future. Editor Newsfoto Publishing Company is grateful for your patronage and recognizes the role you have played in the development of its plant. In return it shall continue to serve you with full sensibility of your confidence in its ability to print your yearbook; and its continuing aim is to justify that confidence. NEWSFOTO PUBLISHING CO.
