’Dedication riving up Wellesley St. on September 1, 1980, we spotted the stately, black Regis College sign and felt our hearts drop; feelings of anxiety, apprehen- sion and excitement mingled as we tried to compose our- selves for this first day. Freshmen-even the name spelled fear. Then, a hand reached over from the driver’s seat and gave our own a comforting pat. Breathing a sigh of relief, we remembered that we were not alone-our “parents”, be they mothers, fathers, family members or friends, were with us. While we were meeting new roommates and making friends. Mom and Dad joked and laughed, helping to smooth over awkward silences. After assisting and preparing us to settle into the foreign world of college, our parents did us the big- gest favor-they said “goodbye”, giving a group of nervous, teenage girls the space and time to become confident, well-educated women. This development began in our freshman year when those of us living on campus suffered bouts of homesickness while learning to adjust to dormitory living and cafeteria food. Those of us who com- muted from home took our first step into maturity and began assuming the academic and social re- sponsibilities of college. Parent’s Weekend arrived and we welcomed our parents, not with fears but with eagerness to intro- duce them to friends and invite them to share in our college experiences. Exclaiming with wonder over our sparsely decorated rooms. Mom and Dad marveled at how independent and determined their daughter had become and we hid our smiles of pleasure. During freshman year we needed our parents in a special way but they remained faithful throughout the next three as well. We cherished the hours of “girl talk” with Mom at the Mother-Daughter Dinners and “gigged” on the dance floor with Dad at the annual Father-Daughter extravaganzas. Our parents both pleased and embarrased us with their public exclamations about their “Regis daughter” and their insistence on racing up the Chapel aisle to snap our pictures at the Junior Ring and Cap and Gown ceremonies. They have lent their support through the Regis College Guild and the Fa- ther’s Association and in so many other ways we have taken for granted and could never express in words. Now, our four years are over. Finally, we are seniors and nearer to being the “confident and well educated” women we have been preparing to be. However, we could never have reached this point in our lives without the continued and unfailing emotional, financial and spiritual support of those who have “parented” us. It is for their innumerable votes of confidence and nev- er ending faith in us that we dedicate our 1984 Yearbook to our par- ents.
