4 Or)(j Co As 5 , ' 9 es ocior, ' On 5 0 , yours ‘ ' ror Of Ad ' SSu 005 Bk‘ ‘’ i V; WIM‘: n ’Dedication riving up Wellesley St. on September 1, 1980, we spotted the stately, black Regis College sign and felt our hearts drop; feelings of anxiety, apprehen- sion and excitement mingled as we tried to compose our- selves for this first day. Freshmen-even the name spelled fear. Then, a hand reached over from the driver’s seat and gave our own a comforting pat. Breathing a sigh of relief, we remembered that we were not alone-our “parents”, be they mothers, fathers, family members or friends, were with us. While we were meeting new roommates and making friends. Mom and Dad joked and laughed, helping to smooth over awkward silences. After assisting and preparing us to settle into the foreign world of college, our parents did us the big- gest favor-they said “goodbye”, giving a group of nervous, teenage girls the space and time to become confident, well-educated women. This development began in our freshman year when those of us living on campus suffered bouts of homesickness while learning to adjust to dormitory living and cafeteria food. Those of us who com- muted from home took our first step into maturity and began assuming the academic and social re- sponsibilities of college. Parent’s Weekend arrived and we welcomed our parents, not with fears but with eagerness to intro- duce them to friends and invite them to share in our college experiences. Exclaiming with wonder over our sparsely decorated rooms. Mom and Dad marveled at how independent and determined their daughter had become and we hid our smiles of pleasure. During freshman year we needed our parents in a special way but they remained faithful throughout the next three as well. We cherished the hours of “girl talk” with Mom at the Mother-Daughter Dinners and “gigged” on the dance floor with Dad at the annual Father-Daughter extravaganzas. Our parents both pleased and embarrased us with their public exclamations about their “Regis daughter” and their insistence on racing up the Chapel aisle to snap our pictures at the Junior Ring and Cap and Gown ceremonies. They have lent their support through the Regis College Guild and the Fa- ther’s Association and in so many other ways we have taken for granted and could never express in words. Now, our four years are over. Finally, we are seniors and nearer to being the “confident and well educated” women we have been preparing to be. However, we could never have reached this point in our lives without the continued and unfailing emotional, financial and spiritual support of those who have “parented” us. It is for their innumerable votes of confidence and nev- er ending faith in us that we dedicate our 1984 Yearbook to our par- ents. Our triumphs. Zhese pages are testimony to the best of times. Zhe iaughter and love that we have shared through our four years at Kegis find new life in every photo, poem and prayer in this book. We will never forget the friendships we have cultivated here though times and miles may come between us. yet, we have also shared disappointments and frustrations at Kegis and these too are recorded in this book. We have found that it can hurt to grow, to learn, to change. At times we have cried and struggled, but ultimately we have endured, becoming stronger and gentler. Jt is now time for us to share with the world what we have shared with each other. We will ocperience new joys and new triumphs, as we continue to grow, to learn, to change. We will also efcperience fresh disappointments and frustrations which will test our gentleness and strength. And if we ever need to be reminded that we are loved or that we are capable of loving, all we need do is look through this book and remember what we have learned and shared our triumphs, our joys. The number of women involved in the program is limited, which may be some indication of the intensity of the program. Outside of the normal academic exp ectations of the college and the majority of concentrations, it is essentia] that Social Work majors do an intensive internship consisting of 400 hours of ‘‘on the job training ” This dual role of student and intern requires a great degree of devotion Still eleven women chose this field less than two years ago and eleven women will graduate in May 1984 with a degree in Social Work. In and of itself this seems to substantiate the effectiveness and credibility of the Social Work program at Regis College Dr. Louise Lopman Chairperson 48 Rhoda Greenspan S. Therezon Sheerin Chairperson The Psychology Department at Regis offers a wide range of fields of study to coincide with the diverse backgrounds of its department members. This natural science department is developed through the minds of S. Therezon Sheerin (Chairperson), Dr. Walsh, Dr. Foley, S. Viterbo McCarthy and Dr. Gribbons. Through course studies these educators provide lectures, laboratories, seminars, and independent studies, to prepare Regis women for a wide range of career options. It is at this time we would like to say “good bye” to Dr. Warren Gribbons and thank him for his wisdom and dedication to the Regis Community. We would, also like to send warm wishes to his wife who accompanies him on his long walks and his swims in the pool. The Gribbons family will be missed by all. Dr. Mary Foley Dr. Warren Gribbons S. Viterbo McCarthy 49 The French Department believes that it is the rendez-vous of an universal elite. Conversation in la belle langue francaise unites us in scholarship, literature, history, the fine arts, and life. In life that is sane and in life that is absurd. Nothing lies exterior to our area of interest, and no one. Our work is our joy and our joy is our work. “Italy is notoriously distinguished. Her past is glorious, her achievements are dazzling, her traditions noble, her fame awe- inspiring, and her charm irresistible. I have known her and admired her for a long time. I love her dearly.” The Italians, Luigi Barzini S. Rosenda Gill Chairperson Dr. Althes C. Ana Aloma Velilla Mary Hamilton Wolfkopf S. Patricia McDonough S. Perpetuus Lang S. Juan Mahan i- Josephine DeSimone Camille C. Malamud 50 “The price of pig, Is something big; Because its corn, You’ll understand. Is high-priced too; Because it grew Upon the high-priced farming land. If you’d know why That land is high. Consider this; its price is big Because it pays Thereon to raise The costly corn, the high-priced pig-” -H.J. Davenport- S. Mary Oates Chairperson George Michelis S. Helen Fenton 51 The Political Science Department: educating students to be responsible citizens of the world and effective participants in political life at the local, national and global levels. S. Leila Hogan Chairperson Dr. Leo Chang Eleni Mahaira Odoni S. Jeanne d’Arc O’Hayre J 52 In a time of increased specialization there is need for the broader view provided by liberal learning, because they touch so many of the aspects of human experience — language, religion, art, literature, philosophy, history, archaeology, — Classical Studies provides this broad view. In addition to providing the depth and breadth of understanding to be knowledgable in the fast-paced society of the 80 ’s, the study of History teaches very important skills which are the requisites of efficient performance in the work world; e.g. research and analysis, critical thinking and reasoning, and oral and written communication of ideas. S. Betty Cawley Chairperson 53 The department aims to give each student the opportunity to participate in a well-balanced program in physical education and to develop recreational skills for use in leisure time activities during and after college. Olive Nolan I Edwina A. Hughes Chairperson Raymond Harrington Judith Burling Athletic Director 54 Sheryl Popkin I Courses in English language, and literature prepare the Regis student for life in a variety of fields. The values of writers in our culture from the author of Beowulf to T.S. Eliot furnish a background to carry into family and professional careers. Study in writing makes the Regis graduate articulate and persuasive as well. Mrs Mary Molony chairperson S. Marilyn MacGregor 55 The Biology curriculum ensures a broad background with an opportunity to pursue interests in such areas as genetics, development, biochemistry, etc. Courses are not designed simply to convey information, rather through lectures, laboratories, seminars, and independent study, one is able to experience the process by which scientific knowledge is acquired. Not only does the curriculum contribute to one’s liberal education, but also provides training which serves as a basic preparation for a broad range of career options. S. Cecilia Agnes Mulrennan Chairperson 56 Mary Lombard Mary Arnold Jane A. Roman Chairperson 57 The Regis College Mathematics Department offers students the opportunity to further their knowledge in the field of mathematics. This natural science department is inspired by the leadership of Dr. S. Williamson. Dr. Williamson along with with her colleagues Dr. J. Criscenti, Mr. J. Hennen, and S. Joan Duffy shed light on such topics as Algebra, Calculus, Topology, Intermediate Analysis, Statistics, Number Theory, Geometry and the History of Mathematics. An area that is interwoven with this department is the Computer Science Division of Regis College. Here Dr. L. Kovijanic instructs the students in various computer languages which are becoming popular in today’s computerized society. After diligently studying these fields for four years the Regis graduate goes forth with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics to confidently begin a career or to vigorously continue her education. S. Dorothy McKenzie Chairperson S. Maryann Doyle 58 r ' - To Make a Difference “We may imagine perhaps that creation was finished long ago. This is not true. It continues more graciously than ever .... and we serve to complete it, even with the humblest work of our hands ... In each of our works we labor, in a very minute but real way to build the Pleroma. ... In action I adhere to the creative power of God. I coincide with it; I become not only its instrument but its living extension.” - Teilhard de Chardin The Divine Milieu S. Mary Rita Grady S. Ann Marie Grady Dr. Edward Stevens Chairperson S. Catherine E. Murphy 59 S. Louisella Walters The Art Department provides students with the basic theory and practice necessary to become creative teachers, art historians, museum and gallery curators, painters, print-makers, and photographers. To assure its majors of future success in such careers, an experienced and talented faculty carefully advise students into those areas in which they demonstrate the greatest potential. The department is equally attentive to a broad spectrum of non-majors who learn how to draw meaningful relationships between art and the natural and social sciences. S. Marie deSales Dineen The Music Department promotes the discovery and understanding of Music as (1) a significant area of knowledge, (2) a fine art and (3) a component of all types of human activity. It provides courses in Music and contributes Music for all types of campus occasions, such as Concerts Liturgies, and Special College Days (i.e. Cap and Gown Service, Admissions Day). Sheila Vogt S. Margaret Williams McCarthy Chairperson 60 i The Drama Department is introduced by S. Gretchen Bogan. Sister provides a woman with open option to develop her theatrical talents for use in in business and theatre. S. Gretchen Bogan Chairperson The Communications Department led by S.
