EVENTS Iranian students seize the U.S. Embassy along with 60 American hostages on No- vember 4, 1979. Iran pro- poses a trade of the hostages for the Shah. One year later, 52 Americans are still being held by the Iranians. John Wayne, also known as “the Duke,” dies June 1 1, 1979 of complications from can- cer. Eleven rock fans are trampled to death at a Who concert at the Riverfront Coliseum, Cincinnati, Ohio on December 3, 1979.
