' l THE MOUNT REGIS 1975 REGIS COLLEGE WESTON, MASSACHUSETTS fiEGlS COLLEGE ARCHIVES Some of us sat down and discussed how we viewed Regis in 1975 and concluded there was something different, you could even say special about Regis. It is a women ' s institution founded by women, run by women, for women. I ' ve seen some women ' s institutions, for financial reasons, sacrificing one of their most unique claims in the halls of academia, go co-ed. We hope that Regis does not take that route, and believe that there is a need for an all-women ' s institution in these times. More recently we have seen women being given more responsibility: some accepting, some declining, some not even caring. What better place is there to assert ourselves as women than in an academic setting dedicated to the education of female minds. We ' ve had good days and bad, met with both cooperation and indifference. But we ' ve tried to put together a book of what Regis is: a collection of our thoughts, a collection of colors, many filtered, many varying shades. Some of you will just breeze through this book, others will take time . . . But, we all leave a mark here — even if it only be our initials scratched on a desk top. We have extended ourselves to others that they may know and understand what we have been and what we hope to be and have gradually recognized we represent a history of our own a time of our own. We have committed ourselves to those willing and capable minds who, if nothing else, have profferred wisdom and intelligence molded and refined by age and experience. Like tentacles and leaves, we have stood out from the core of community we have created to carry forth the natural extensions of this institution and interact with others. We have sought to articulate as women in written form, in song, in conversation, that which we emote as complete people, that music of the silent spheres. We have created an environment that has attempted to merge many varying styles of living, and as a result, has brought us to basketball courts in Framingham to hair salons in Boston to Triple A in Weston to Monet and Miro at the Museum to responsible decision making back to Regis with bursting rooms full of people, smoke and beer back to our homes back to our familes and finally back to ourselves to integrate. And if our stay here has only meant that for one instant in time we stood still — and looking around — breathed in deeply that boundless joy of being of being a woman of feeling that intense communion with the people who surround us of feeling that which cannot be said I say it is worthwhile and we have begun. . those willing and capable minds . Mary Oates Edmund Rice Cindy Cajka My thanks to the students; I think they know by now they are the reason I came to Regis ... It is both awesome and exciting to know that Regis must now combine vision and achievement in new ways if we are to be true to our own tradition of offering women the experiences that will bring her to a new sense of herself, of society, and of service, and if we are to challenge her to the competencies, the discipline and the knowledge that will make her a truly free woman. It is too soon for me to predict the way we will have to meet this challenge. I have only one clear conviction — we must do it together — each segment of the whole that makes up Regis, contributing his or her gift and insight, each segment listening to one another, learning from one another, respecting one another, and encouraging one another to the creative possibilities that can only flow from a dynamic, intense sense of the interdependencies of all creation. S.T.H. 10 3 74 “There is a special style at Regis, one perhaps com- pounded of fire and earth, of the private training of the spirit and the public sense of practicality, both lit with compassion and good humor . . . Places like Regis College, which has determined to concentrate its excellent resources on developing the gifts of women, can help us all escape from that ancient dissonance between women ' s talents and the low expectations held for us in public and private life. I regard Regis as a bastion against such erosion in our power of thinking and judging, and a quiet center of imagination and power in understanding the value of a liberal arts education, which, after all, comes to us clothed in language. That power will not be lost here. Dr. Emily Vermeule 10 3 74 . . to carry forth the natural extensions of this institution an earthlike star. S. Wonder We have come together to share with each other that part of us that has stood the test of time. Each and everyone of us sees a small part of herself reflected within the community. We have become the fibers that have woven together the tapestry of Regis. We start out as a novice, unsure of ourselves, thrust into the hectic world of dorm living. Gradually, we smooth out the rough edges and sink into the routine of Regis. The day to day classes melt into a semester and then lanuary . . . Man his Peril or Potential, internship in Boston, the stock market, movies, theatre, opera ... the sky is the limit. With no classes to attend, it is perhaps the best time to discover whether or not you can launch a rocket to the moon, whether your future is in eggs or congress or expressing your creativity with a needle and thread. Changing attitudes are reflected by changes we have initiated. Parietals, like geese, a very seasonal issue, has prompted us to make decisions about our life style. Can I live with my decision? Can I live with your decision? I We can only hope that our education here at Regis has been the summation of not only what we have learned in the classrooms, but what we have learned from each other and above all ourselves. And that we as women have and will continue to embrace all experiences. L •Vv This year the class of 75 has the largest graduating class of black women in the history of Regis. On these two pages, the A.B.W. celebrates this event. So we are all different and inevitably see things differently. But none of us is necessarily wrong. It has been written on nearly all Occasions and spoken in various Ways that we as black people at This point in time should be Almost non-existent and stark Raving mad! We are aware the beginning, Middle and end lies Within us. Like that of a flower garden is The description, different shapes. Sizes, colors and smells but Together as one! This time, they have pressed you down and sewn your mouth to smother Cassandra. Dagger to silk. A finger travels the air, reddened. 1 am suddenly limp, blank as an envelope. This time they have stolen my mother. You would not leave me to suffer, to slay the dragon for an empty suit of armor. That would be no prize. The duty is now play. You must give me a sign.. Today, they ' ll adorn your grave with gold and Egyptian formality. They ' ll dress you in virgin blue, call you genius and never whisper mad. Hush. This is no mad witch. She has risen and quieted. She is not for Halloween, so hush. Hush away in grief appropriate to a master. But 1 will creep by the moon; Grecian, in my sister ' s soiled robes, i will mourn you. I will carry you to a glorious hill and there you will die; proper to a deity, befitting each porcelain memory and each typed page which prepared us. You have sprung cool in me. 1 thought I was dying, lips fixed in stillness. But it was preparation. It was rest and respect. Throughout these four years, our lives have progressed in the same basic environment; we live and create from that which we have found . . . four walls, two beds, two bureaus; yet all are different . . . one continuity, many diverse schemes. We may have chosen to live away from campus, but we are all still enmeshed in the same academic atmosphere. Our involvement in cam- pus life, and in each others lives, has enabled us to develop an awareness of community. ■ ■ ' • s “. • ' • 11 • • We journey to Triple A, Buttrick ' s, Friendly ' s, McDonald ' s, Dunkin ' Donuts, the Villa, clubs in Boston, Great Beginnings, the Reservoir, the Na- tick Mall, Wellesley Center, FHarvard Square, Ar- rowhead Gardens, Store 24, the Paradise, and Waltham Supermarket; each and every place add- ing a new dimension to our lives, or inches to our waistlines. Socially, we travel to area colleges, and in a more academic vein, to the Brandeis Li- brary or the BPL, gathering knowledge, books and interesting stories to relate when we return home. But no matter where we go, we always come back. We have, in four years ' time, been exposed to the same government, culture and heritage; yet each of us has chosen to interpret it in our own way . . . each different, each unique, a clear and precise expression of ourselves. Some of us have created an intellectual and social environment which becomes us; experience moving around us, surrounding us, adding meaning to our lives. I And if we have not conceived of, given birth to and evolved into our own selves, if we have chosen to believe ideas without question, to ac- cept fact without flinching, to never debate the mysteries of our existence, then our communal sharing has been for naught. Our joint possessions must unfold into shared liabilities, or our relation- ship with Regis has not been completed. I A unique social atmosphere created out of an ordinary day . . . the evolution of a party ... a coming together to eat, drink, laugh, and in doing so, share thoughts and ideas. Learning from each other . . . having a good time just being together. Dressing up and stepping out ... a meal means so much more. We partake in one of Marvin ' s meals . . . din- ner suddenly becomes Steak and Brew Night or Pizza and Beer Night , with echoes of You must have your meal ticket! ringing in our ears. We wondered at the sudden abundance of food and kegs of beer ... in our cafeteria?? The end- less multitude of banquets to celebrate every oc- casion . . . cookouts on the A-field . . . the Soul Food Dinner , an unprecedented taste of Afro-American culture. Each feast a rare oppor- tunity. Each heartfelt Thank-you, Marvin, ex- ploding into a standing ovation at the Christmas Banquet. All these fond memories helped to erase the sheer boredom of veal parmagian, baked fish or cheese omelets. 1 4 y Special social activities . . . those Freshman- Sophomore Spring Weekends: which was worse, catching pneumonia on the boat, or indigestion from Mama Leone ' s chicken parmagian? So much to remember . . . James Montgomery . . . the endless array of cultural speakers . . . John Kenneth Gailbraith, Shirley Chisholm, John Kerry, Margaret Mead and Robert Drinan, to name only a few . . . and the many cultural events . . . concerts, dance ensembles, poetry readings, the unique praising of Anne Sexton, Sister Gretchen ' s plays, candle lighting in the Foyer . . . the list goes on and on. The Prom, the Champagne Party, the FHarvard Jazz Band . . . good times in Juan Valdez . . . late morning coffee in the Commuter cafe. s ' • r • • ' m. • • • • : -it- ...T • 0 • % The Mother-Daughter Banquet . . . dressed in our finery, manners superb. Watch your language, leave your cigarettes in your room. Show mom you ' ve become a mature woman; enjoy a meal with her away from home. Let her meet your friends . . . your new meal-companions. Live . . . Learn . . .
