A . f S TT1EiDAI5LHN1fIlEK3I9 1974 REGIS COLLEGE Weston, Massachusetts It began with one golden word - acceptance So off you trudged with suitcases, boxes, and barrels full to that glamorous, free-spirited world of college, awaiting your presence at the school on the hill. And here you settled for four years, two years, one year, a month. And here you ate, slept, attended classes and studied. And here you laughed, cried, hid, became frustrated and bored, but you grew. En.. 'I 4 -'if kgx - -.o uv ' v I Qi'- Id. els' A, 1 'f IH Some you adopted and looked at . . . often remembering and eherishing the moments as you grew to know and love these Worn but comfortable memoirsg Some were valuable for a While, or so you thought, but soon they lost their uniqueness - their reality -- and so you put these back into their envelopesg Cthers you avoided and so you hid these in their sealed packets in the depths of your drawersg But most you took for granted never bothering to stop and see, or touch, or listen, or photograph Blandly, naively, feeling, finding no emotion. You just never really thought about - What? l I The utility of your education? The strength that has buoyed your existence so far? The book you were required to read last semester? Your favorite chair in the library? The shower stall, second from the left which jolts you into reality each morning? And what's so important about sitting at the same table in the cafeteria - breakfast, lunch and dinner? About using the same toilet stall when necessary? About never feeling exactly right if youlre not dressed in your favorite pair of jeans? Maybe nothing. Don't feel guilty! You,re not the only one. But if there was something there, would you ever be aware of it? Mechanization, avoidance, disinterest, profiteering - your environment, your nourishment. You see it everywhere. -- in politics, in the economy, in inter- national affairs, in society, in that last cigarette you just smoked. And you have accommodated yourself, whether consciously or unconsciously, to this role as every grind of the wheel burrows you deeper and deeper into passivity - How? How did you get here? When did it happen? Stop the film - stop the action and go back. Retrieve those old rejected photographs and look again It will only take a few minutes - a few years 4-' - Ll' -- wifi x - , .4 -Q-Cl 0 'sa 4, GQ: 53 Y F sw,- f xx .ov X if fx ,,g ,W?1,Q 'tongs' fi-f, jffi. The hopes and dreams of teachers still reach out to their pupils, guiding them through a process which at its least is irritating. An administration still feels the weight of policy-making and must bear the brunt of its impact upon the educational experiments - the students. X Are we all so far removed from members of the medieval university? Not really, though the emphasis may shift from time to time. The educational process - those words have a mechanized ring, suggesting images of classrooms with uniform students, thirty copies of a textbook caps, gowns and diplomas. Yet the goal of this concrete and abstract process is to initiate a search, to choose a path, to act wisely. It is a precarious balance we seek, poised between decision and hesitation, stressing neither logic nor emotion. And in striving to maintain that equilibrium our lives will be filled with a series of instant replays. The immediate situation may change and will change, but the facts, the bare essentials, remain the same. J: ff , i ff!-I a E- . min- 3? . - Z - in .ia-'ff' yi A choice must be made. In most instances it need not be earth-shattering, but in the normal course of events what remains is not so much what we choose, but that We chose. The tool was handed to usg what we make with that tool is left up to the individual imagination. Whatever we do We must continue to question. In the course of this question- ing, assumed to be an inkling of our fu- ture success or failure, We begin to reflect upon just what we have gained from our stay here. One important question is that of individual initiative. Have We used it? Have we explored or do we procrastinate and wait until the doors have been shut and opportunity disappears? Have we ac- cepted and recognized that demon, per- sonal responsibility? Have we used all the tools at our disposal, or have we refused to employ them? ,.,, - . ,L-ff ,- -:g 4, 4, Q, . - -P ,1 V -: gy--fl' ' V'-' , f ww.: f 5,071 , -M A ,I .I V Q ig . 'igkt ' Q' 'gh 11' .4 I Good morning fellow Americans! This is WSHI-TV Broadcasting live from high atop the water tower in beautiful downtown Weston. This is Leo Tard, reporting the 8 o'clock news. Now, on the national scene - Tensions run high today as Saga Food Service, 1 Saga Lane, Cali- fornia announced that there will be chicken and French Fries for dinner. Later this evening students will be anxiously awaiting an address from our President, President Nixon, on the current energy crisis. The general hope here is that the President will make some comment as to how to solve the impending toilet paper shortage on campus. I know I speak for the entire campus when I sin- cerely say that I hope he will Wipe things out. On the ecology scene - A report submitted to Miles Laboratories yes- terday by Throckmorton P. Nurd in- dicates that Mr. Nurd has found a way of recycling chocolate pudding into gas. Researchers there say the only real problem they've encoun- tered so far is that the new process creates - dirty snow? .1 . In .viii -WMI And now for some local news - yes, news right here from our cam- pus!! This morning at 5:45AM a re- port was phoned into Campus Security concerning a strange light in front of College Hall. As the Campus Security guard drove behind College Hall, sure enough, he encountered the sun, rising. This was noted in the log. And now, in the way of a follow- up, hereis a news bulletin on the Philatelic Museum robbery which occurred not long ago and shocked the sensibilities of us all. Reports to- day indicated that several of the miss- ing stamps, missing after the robbery at the museum, were found in the hubcaps of the Regis College station wagon. That's a sticky one!! Local po- lice report that it was Campus Securi- ty's stick-to-itivenessl' that broke this case. A report from Mr. DeCamp's office, our director of Administrative Affairs, today revealed a new pro- gram of improvements here on cam- pus for the coming semester. Included in this new program are the painting of curbstones, the placing of reflective tape on trash barrels, and the washing of STOP signs. When questioned about the constant prob- lem of parking on campus, Mr. De- Camp refused comment. For all those seniors in our audi- ence, let's commence fhee, heej with some job opportunities that have been phoned into us. - There are reported opportunities at New Eng- land Tractor Trailer Training School which is an Equal Opportunity Em- ployer. Hey! Here's a note for all you teachers. There is one teaching posi- tion available in Swasiland. Appli- cant need only speak Irdu and be able to travel. Well folks, that's the news. And now itls time for TV-Talk, our on- the-air television guide. Today, tear- drops trickle tremulously as the TV traumas transpire. As the Channel Turns? - one last moment to live - soapsuds Sanskrit. Easy now, theylre only make believe. Well, Regina had her baby, and Frank decided to sue her while Harry tiled for divorce. And Bettyls mother was hit by a car on the way home from Jane's father's. And Dorothy practically hemorrhaged while the doctor took a leak - eeep!!! Wasn,t that thrilling? Be sure to tune in at 3:00 PM this afternoon for As the Channel Turns? The time is now 8:15 and it,s time for our campus talk-show, Call on the Coeds. To- day we would like to question stu- dents concerning the Watergate Affair and how it has affected them. Excuse me, Miss. What do you think of the Watergate Affair?,' Well, I think it's disgusting that Americans can,t get decent plumbers when they really need them. Do you know what I mean?,' Yes, yes that's fine. But what about the great Ameri- cans involved? Yes, I think there were some great Americans in- volved. Thank you very much. Now let's interview someone else. Miss, what are your thoughts on the Watergate Affair? Well, I have to hurry, I have yoga at nine o'clock. But I think Mr. Wa- tergate should have been more care- ful, after all he must have known there,d be a big convention in town that weekend. Thank you very much. That was just a random sampling of how our campus coeds feel about a very im- portant national aifairf' 3gs2f., 3 ,.i ' P' i X ' In our Campus Briefs this morn- ing we find that the student govern- ment is about to propose a new system of parking tickets whereby tickets would be issued to cars with even-numbered license plates on even-numbered days and to odd- numbered plates on odd days. The rationale behind this being that cars on an off-day would not be able to get gas to move. Reports from the library today in- dicate that the new policy will be to check out books for a four week in- stead of a two week period. This will mean that tracking down that book you need this week will be more of a challenge!! On our social weekend calendar, we are proud to announce that tickets are still going fast for our upcoming Gene Pitney Concert. And yes, folks, he will sing his new song, Mecca Tea and sympathy will be served. That concludes our morning re- port. Please stay tuned for more fine programming - and of course, Jim Shorts with the news at noon. And remember - let's make it a good day!!! Life is a circus and we are all in the freak show!! :j'. ,KE f X. .I H A. sl. , 4' .4 - - -f ' '... . w f.?'. - nf H. ' - ' .- ' ,,,4,e?..a-than- ,f--f fr- -S'.Q,-r-1.1,-u,,,.f 9' '--',tE4-1 4, 9 . It seems to indicate much more than one particular unit of students. Class seems more a measure of something extra, something sought after and hard to define. Almost charis- matic in nature, it is not limited by rank or means. ll We each seek class in our own way. Here, We agonize through classes, physical units of learning and seek to Hnd ourselves as mem- bers of a particular class - graduated steps which lead us from a fresh exuberance to a more careful and studied approach to life. I , l I 'll 1 I 1 4 in 5 I li il A l f il il Il El m , 5 2 xl 2 it 1 l Our ultimate hope is to acquire some small amount of class - a little polish to blunt the rough edges and bring out the shine that we knew was there all the time. Each member of the campus community has found or is finding a different way to do just that, for class involves style, something deliciously personal, no matter what the social, eco- nomic, political or intellectual class each is associated with. Class, whether a tangible unit or an abstract quality, implies the forma- tion of bonds and a pledge of commit- ment - to the friends who have withstood the trials and joys that friendship always knows, to the teachers who have pledged a commit- ment to help us along our road, no matter what the pace, to the parents who stuck with our growing pains gambling for success against tremen- dous odds, and most of all, class en- tails a commitment to being a woman, to the body and mind that we live in each day despite the test of endurance and self-respect that class means. ' pus--4 -, i N . . a .Qgbf '5' ' No matter how we view class, it is an important part of the Regis community and is a concept we must all learn to be comfortable with. Consider it carefully. Each may find herself closer to an evaluation of what it means to be here. And so each venture Is a new beginning, a raid on the inarticulate VWth shabby equipment always deteriorating In the general mess of imprecision of feeling, Undisczplined squads of emotion. And what there is to conquer By strength and submission, has already been discovered Once or twice, or several times, by men whom one cannot hope To emulate - but there is no competition - There is only the fight to recover what has been lost And found and lost again and again,' and now, under conditions That seem unpropitious. But perhaps neither gain nor loss. For us, there is only the trying. The rest is not our business. Home is where one starts from. As we grow older The world becomes stranger, the pattern more complicated Of dead and living. Not the intense moment Isolated, with no before and aj7e1g But a lq'etime burning in every moment And not the lq'etime of one man only But of old stones that cannot be deczphereaf There is a time for the evening under starlight, A time for the evening under lamplight K T he evening with the photograph albumj. Love is most nearly itsehf When here and now cease to matter. Old men ought to be explorers Here and there does not matter We must be still and still moving Into another intensity For a further union, a deeper communion Through the dark cold and the empty desolation, The wave cry, the wind cry, the vast waters Of the petrel and the porpoise. In my end is my beginning. TS Eliot CLASS OF 1974 Alonso, Maribel Orguidea 1906 Sta Maria Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico AGNEW, SPIRO cfo Federal District Court Baltimore, Md. ANNESSE, CHERYL 6 Lovell Rd. Stevens Studios P. S. Hey, you guys! Now that this book is all jinished, we just want to let you know that we laughed until we cried doing this thing. But, the important thing is that we did it for you, not just for us. It was nothing but a pile of pictures and funny typed words until now anyway. We tried very hard to get all of you represented here someway or another and now we sup- pose you won 't even read it or connect things until someday when you have nothing better to do than read the yearbook. But that's all right. What matters is that you do read it, not just look at it. This isn't just a yearbook or an annual. It's a living, breathing experience that happened to jind everybody in the same place at about the same time. It's not as easy as throwing pictures on a page, because that's not what we're out to do here. Wait a minute, you try it. Go over the book page by page, and make your own mental aajustments and additions . . . it wasn't as easy as you thought - right? O.K. Thanks. Thanks a lot. We just wanted to get that across to you and heh? you to appreciate it because, aj?erall, it's a gm from us to you. ,Lv 'l' fvv V - I 1 ,, V , - 1 1 1 1 , I I 1 . 1 l k - I , I-.
