PUGLIESE, M.B.A. 4 In a microcosmic aspect Regis reflects the aura of change that has settled on our generation. Involvement and commit- ment have returned, for we have grown away from a self-im- posed introspection into the awareness of a fuller world. The Peace Corps established by the late President John F. Kennedy and foreshadowed by the Regis Lay Apostolate, is witness of the dedicated spirit of the new generation. Concern with the actualization of the American credo of individual rights, with civil rights in particular, reaffirms the individual’s desire to involve himself with his fellowman. This participation brings us to an awareness of a world made more accessible through a greater communication among men. Communication, whether it be with outer planets, political parties, or college seminars, has become the Gibraltar of almost all our modern thought. Moreover, the increasing ecumenism, exemplified by dialogues between faiths and the greater involve- ment of the laity in the work of the Church underscores this communication. At Regis College we have felt deeply the impact of com- munion in all spheres. Specifically, a greater communication has emerged between faculty and students. But of primary im- portance is a more intense fusion of students and administra- tion. Foremost in the materialization of this strengthened bond is our President, Sister Mary Jeanne d’Arc, who possesses a dis- cerning sense of tradition with the vision to welcome fruitful change. It is a joy, then, to dedicate the 1965 Mount Regis to our President, Sister Mary Jeanne d’Arc. It follows that the growth of the whole Regis community spiritual- ly, socially, and physically can result only from the development of each of these parts. One obvious manifestation of the growth this year at Regis is a physical one. Soon Regis will have an enrollment of 1,000 students. This will necessitate more dormitories, a chapel building, and audito- rium, a wing on the science building, and an athletic building. The spirit ol the physical expansion has already been dem- onstrated during our four years here by the construction of Alumnae Hall, the campus student union building; the new dor- mitory, called Domitilla Hall, in honor of the founder of our college; and the Cardinal Spellman Philatelic Museum. Nor has this current progress failed to include existing buildings. College Hall has been considerably renovated and up- dated. There are several new classrooms, administrative and faculty offices, and a spacious new locker room and mail room on the first floor. A professionally staffed and fully modern equipped health center has been built in Maria Hall, and Regis Hall, the former Peak Hall, has undergone a face-lifting, while the former com- merce building has been completely remodeled for a campus art center. A final transformation has been the installation of mod- ern outdoor lighting across the campus. But in this spirit of continuous transition it is always the individual student who stands out against the back drop of these externals. No matter how great the exterior changes may be, it is the people, not the buildings, who will lead Regis College — our college — to a more complete fulfillment of itself. ■■ i Regis Hall Maria Hall, predominantly a senior dorm, accommodates over one hundred students. Cardinal Spellman Philatelic Museum, unique on a college campus, houses the Vatican C-itv collection, exhibited at the 1964 World’s Fair. Providing rooms for one hundred and seventy girls, Domitilla Hall is the most recent campus building. The former commerce building now an art center, contains painting, sculpture, ceramic studios, and an exhibition gallery. Overlooking katsura drive. Cardinal O’Connell Hall is equipped with scientific laboratories, lecture halls, and reading rooms. 19 . . the spring , the summer ; The childing autumn, angry winter, change Their wonted liveries A Midsummer Night ' s Dream, 11,1 Who is the new woman ? What is it that distinguishes her from her counterpart of the forties and the fifties ? Is this new woman definable, or is she, in essence, the same woman whose spirit now responds in a fuller manner ? We see the new woman as one who is increasingly perceptive to demands placed upon her power of creativity and her ability to transcend the bounds of her family and immediate friends. In her striving to become an integral part of her college community, the Regis student freely imbibes knowledge, ideas and attitudes on a two-fold level. Each academic discipline con- tributes in a unique manner to the emerging of the new woman and to the development of the power ofeach individual to mature and to share. Each of the four college years contributes in a unique way to the continual maturing process of the self, giving depth of thought and breadth of imagination to the high school graduate. The Regis woman is also accorded manifold opportunities for development on another level through lectures, intercollegiate discussions, catechetical, hospital and social work services, gov- ernment mathematics projects, and through departmental clubs, student publications, drama, and music. Each one’s participa- tion in various areas springs from her desire for an expression of creativity initiated within her through contact with her teachers, her associates, and books. Expanded into the spirit of commitment to others, it is this personal creativity, defined as a new selflessness, that is yet as old as mankind. It is this truly Christian spirit of selflessness of which St. Paul speaks when he admonishes one to “put on the new man.” College Life world. Sister M. And now we find ourselves older and wiser, liberally educated and ready to as- sume adult status in an ever-progressing world of political unrest and scientific mechanization. We are fuller women, we women of the sixties, possessed, not with the formless phantoms of unreal objec- tives, but with the imagination, foresight, and dedication to carry out our ideals. We realize that it is only through the establishment of a balance between our inner spiritual world and the outer world of reality that our will to mastery can be achieved. We are visionary women with a task set before us hopefully to emcompass a part of humanity with the knowledge we have attained so that we may arrive at an exegis of life not only for ourselves, but for our brothers also. Although we may have changed through the years, though our tastes may be more refined, our characters more cultured, a charm more developed, yet there remains always within us the child-like spontaneity and naivete of our more delicate years. It is this intuitively ingenuous quality which will prevail through the ages, ever influencing mankind with womanly warmth and joy. With the love which we possess, we can create, give, govern, and find our entire existence. The total fulfillment of our existence is molded now, and ever will be, through our transcending power to give and receive love. We envision these ideals and will strive to translate them into an even fuller reality. Ann Carmen Blando, ’65 The twentieth century has seen a tremendous change in attitude regarding recognition of the intellectual and creative attributes of the woman. Who has abetter understanding of the processes of propagation and sympathetic understanding if not the woman ? This is her intellectual as well as physical voca- tion; this is her happiness. Margaret Hoyle, ’65 r 77 i ' 4 h In 1927 Regis College consisted of three buildings and fifty students. In 1965, Regis College has eleven buildings and almost eight hundred students. A member of the Class of 1931 would scarcely recog- nize the Regis of today as her Regis, and yet she knows it is the same college. What is the note of identity ? Faculty, administration, the physical make-up, the staff . . .all these have changed, but Regis College is still Regis College. What remains is a Regis student body, more, differ- ent, but still students. For Regis is her students. The student is still the only raison d’etre for her exist ence. Take away the Regis stu- dents and there is no further reason or purpose for a con- vent or community set on a hill in Weston. There can be a college without many things — certainly a college without buildings — some sort of a “Mark Hop- kins on one end of a log and a student on the other.” But without students ? Therefore, Regis, like all colleges, has its primary com- mitment to her students; they are the sole purpose for which all buildings are constructed, all programs developed, and the total effort of faculty, administration and staff are directed. There is, then, above the loyalty so often mentioned — that of the student to Alma Mater — a further loyalty, the devotion of that loving mother to all her children, for they are the continuing Regis — the Regis College of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Reverend Denis J. Burns, Chaplain It was but yesterday we met in a dream. . . But now our sleep has fled and our dream is over, and it is no longer dawn. The noontide is upon us and our half waking has turned to fuller day, and we m ust part. If in the twilight of memory we should meet once more, we shall speak again together. . . And if our hands should meet in another dream we shall build another tower in the sky. The Prophet, Gibran Cap and Gown ceremony, Inaugural Ball, Christmas cere- mony are a sampling of special events which are highpoints in the fullness of college life, adding a further dimension to the molding of the total Regis woman. They crown the activities of classes and daily community living with a special aura of en- chantment and expectation. As her class ring symbolized a one- ness in spirit of previous Regis women, so, too, do traditional events reaffirm this union through their grace and charm. Yet there are other activities which call forth further aspects of the Regis woman - her foresight, effort and perseverance. Because of the actualization of these qualities, our own junior bridge and senior show were unprecedented successes. Thus the Regis graduate is not merely a profile of abstract feminine hyperbolies, but a woman of insight who contributes and perceives what she alone can, and stamps it with the mark of her own individuality. SPECIAL ACTIVITIES Margaret Wilson’s tassel is given the final touch by Dr. Mary Bryan. ... let none presume v To wear an undeserved dignity. An ever-changing student body in a college is a constant source of its regeneration and growth. Initially, Regis College provided us with a setting steeped in line traditions, awaiting the thrust forward that union with a new class would affect. We entered as so many individuals with a wealth of spirit and an openness of mind, eager for further de- velopment. While melding into the Class of 1965, and with the college, in a spirit of continuous growth, the individual student continued as the focal point of all activity and enlargement. A gradual maturing followed — a maturing that became more visible as each member of the Class of 1965 strove in her individual way to live out the current student government theme: the commit- ment of the individual to the community. It is this spirit that has motivated our lives during college. It is such a spirit that must continue to motivate each of us through life beyond the limits of the Regis College campus. Andrius, without whose patience and co-operation this book would have been impos- sible. We extend our gratitude also to the patient Ted Thomte and his staff at Burdette Printers and the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Hookailo of Hook- ailo Studios. Most especially it is the Regis people and the bard of Avon to whom we owe the inspiration for a book of the New Generation built on the traditions of the old. Sheila Tierney Business Manager 196 PRINTED BY burdette company, inc. BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS SENIOR WEEK - 1965 In a passage from his book The Prophet, Gibran speaks metaphorically of human love saying: “For even as love crowns you so shall he crucily you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning. Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun, so shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth. All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets ol your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life’s heart.” This passage from The Prophet is very mean- ingful to us the members ot the Class of 1965, for certainly during our four years at Regis, we have been crowned by love. A warm, surging love. A love engendered in us by our parents and nurtured here with you. It is the love of the teacher who, in his wisdom, has led us to the threshold of our minds, so that in knowing ourselves we are now able to give. It is the love of the friend who, in sharing his thoughts, desires, joys, and sorrows has given of himself. It is only now at this hour of separation that we begin to know the depth of this love. As it is crowning us, so is it crucifying us. May this tree which has just now been opened to the world, in some way symbolize us and the love we have shared here together. As this tree continues to grow and to fulfill the end for which it is destined by our Creator, so may we all continue to live, open- ly responding to the demands made upon us, loving one another, and giving of ourselves outright to 1 1 is will. Echoing Christopher Fry, let us “Thank God our times are now, when wrong comes up to face us everywhere. Never to leave us till we take the long- est stride of soul men ever took. Events today are soul size. ‘The pathway is through love.’ The enter- prise is exploration into GOD.” Valerie Valenti First in the Class Tree Oration, May 19, 1965 With accolades from Sister Jeanne d’Arc, President, and the College assembly, Michiko Inukai, former Regis student, re- ceives the sign of the degree of doctor of laws, honoris causa, from Sister M.
