o reginci high school minneapolis.minnesota q dedication... Sister Elinore Davis has left quiet gifts. She has nourished Regina for many years as principal, and her steadying support of'the school has sustained it, especially through times of uncertainty. Her concern for Regina runs deeper than a belief in education and a loyalty to one school in particular- hers is a concern for individuals, an encouragement of contrasts among them. Sister Elinore is completing her eighth and final year at Regina. Her present responsibilities are with the Archdiocesan Office of Education and on the advisory board for funding to private education through Minnesota business corporations. These activities contrast with her original role as assistant administrator of curriculum, class involvement and admissions. Her contributions have increased within the school and so they will multiply beyond it. She has left quiet gifts. We will continue finding and opening them after she has gone from Regina, and perhaps even after we have left Regina behind; for she has left the gift in us. It is in remembrance and anticipation of these gifts that this profile of our love- this yearbook- is dedicated to Sister Elinore. Suzanne Paul 2 3 prof i le contro t This book is a PROFILE of the 1981-82 school year at Regina. Its sole intent is to ensure that these faoesy experiences, and times in our lives will not be forgotten with the passing of years. It's difficult to make one general statement about so many different people. There are definite CONTRASTS among each of the four classes3 and of course CONTRASTS among individuals in these classes. Each and every member of a class makes some sort of contribution that helps to build the unique character of that class. There is no way we can pinpoint exactly the features of each class3 but we can draw a sketchy or PROFILE3 of the studentsy curriculum9 faculty3 and activities— all of which contribute to the personality and the atmosphere of the school as a whole. We would like to make a general statement of the year in review, and capture its individuality as well; thus our theme... PROFILES CONTRASTS Suzanne. VauZ REGINA LIFE IN A NUTSHELL If you were an outsider, studying Regina as one might study a nut, what would you find? First, you'd meet up with a tough-to-crack academic program, which is the supporting structure for all we do here. Looking deeper, you 'd find a protective layer of staff and student warmth, humor, and personality that carries over into enthusiasm for Regina's many extracurricular activities. Finally, you'd reach the meat of our school, the reason for the rigid academics and the enjoyment in participating: a strong belief in the value of a Christian education, deeply embedded Regina's philosophy. And if that's not something to go nuts over, what is? R€GINfl UF€ Marathon Get Your Wheels Rollin’ What is the only LEGAL event that draws Regina girls to the River? When is the only time Regina girls run for fun and not for men? THE MARATHON!!!!! This year’s marathon took place on October 3rd. Though it was gloomy out, Regina’s spirit kept the day bright. The total school goal was $10,126.85. The total amount collected was $8,840.63. Approximately 247 out of 371 girls participated. The seniors were the only class who made their goal (of course). Everyone enjoyed the humorous skits presented by each class. Afterword, the freshmen received delicious cookies from the seniors, and colorful balloons from the sophomores. The juniors, as part of the tradition gave the freshmen their mascot which this year was a cuddley “Smurf’. This “true blue friend” symbolizes the friendship between the freshmen and the juniors. 1. The room is now the scene of a bar, complete with horses and of course pigs! If you don’t believe a word of this, make a visit to this “barn” sometime! “A ring is round it has no end; and thats how long we’ll be friends.” This was the theme of the junior class ring ceremony on Nov. 20th. The afternoon ceremony began with the song “All Good Gifts” sung by Liz Pumper, Joan Johnson, and Kathy Mashek. The three class officers each chose a reading or poem on friendship. Then the distribution of the rings which Ms. Antonich blessed. Slides of freshman and sophomore year were shown. Following the ceremony was a reception with food and songs. It was a memorable afternoon. 6BONV ROS€ Ebony Rose is a group of students who share their thoughts with each other, however Ebony Rose is open to any individual at Regina. Ebony Rose began as a support group for minority students, to help them realize their talents, abilities and capabilities. Minority students of course are not the only students who need support. Ebony Rose’ ambitions for this year are to have fund raisers, dances, and a talent show for all Regina students. Moderator: Craig Graham. President: Gail Robinson. Vice President; Angelena C. T. This year’s theme was “Building America Together.” The speech is judged on originality, delivery, and the interpretation of the theme. First place winner Mary Shapiro, $125, second place winner, Anne Villella, $75, and third place winner Judy Ell, $50 with Mr. Daniel Stab left, and Mr. Philip J. Carney. Rotary Program J8 This program gives students an opportunity to experience life in another country by living with a family as a family member. This year, seniors Shelly Schmidt and Marcia Malecha were chosen. Shelly will be going to Brazil and Marcia will be going to Italy. Bon Voyage! Close-Up Program The Close-Up Program gives students an opportunity to see how the American government works, “close up”. Minnesota students join with many others from across the country for a week of activities, seminars, and meeting with government officials. There is rarely an idle moment. Much is learned and many new friends are made. Close-Up travelers-Ellen Adams, Maureen Downey, Sherri Winkels, Ellen Ryan. Top row, Marlene and Marcia Malecha. Foreign student, Virginia Prado comes from Bilbao, a Basque port in northern Spain, through the Youth for Understanding program. Christina Cotta came from Belo Horizonte, in eastern Brazil, through a Rotary scholarship. Four students have migrated to the U.S. more permanently. These are juniors My Pham, from Viet Nam, and Mohtaram (Motie) Esmaili, from Tehran, Iran, and seniors Fatima and Ayesha Alam, who left their native Bangladesh for Saudi Arabia before coming to the United States. Not pictured is My Pham. Project 120 Project 120 is a week long program at the Minnesota State Capitol. During this program, 24 students from around the state meet with Minnesota’s state government people. This program gives high school juniors and seniors a close-up learning experience about state government and political process. This year Mary Bambery represented Regina at the Capitol. 39 Whoever reads this book is ordered to be very nice to the yearbook staff, because, when the going got tough, the tough got going. More blood, sweat, and tears went into making this book than anything in all of American literature. The yearbook staff will never forget the variety of emotions that they felt throughout the year, the final feeling being that of accomplishment- something that cannot be lost in a pile of copy. Yearbook Touchstone Touchstone is the school newspaper that communicates news and activities to the students and to the faculty. The name Touchstone was chosen because the name states the ideals of our newspaper — to be a visible, tangible source of communication for everyone. Touchstone is a student publication written and published quarterly by Regina students. The paper is distributed free to all students, faculty and administration. 40 Piano I’d rather be skiing,” Jeanine Iverson is thinking as she performs at the recital. Each week, these talented students work diligently at the piano, bravely encountering Beethoven, Mozart, and Liszt; and become one step closer to that perfect sonata. Patiently, Sr. Rosilla counts time and offers her guidance to our new musical geniuses and furthers them on their road to stardom. Therefore, the next time you pass a piano room and hear a dedicated piano student tickling the ivories, know that you are hearing an aspiring pianist on her way to the top! Top row: K. O’Brien. G. They are pickin’ and strum-min’ their way to fame. Learning everything from gospel to pop music, they faithfully struggle under the direction of their instructor, Carolyn Cassola. Carolyn has taught guitar classes for several years and enjoys her work at Regina. NATIONAL HONOR SOCI6TV Yes, they do more than sell milk and donuts. Being a member of the National Honor Society is an honor and a responsibility. The members are expected to demonstrate the character, leadership, and scholarship of Regina. Often they represent the school in service oriented projects. So whenever you see a student raising the flags on a cold winter morning, remember she is one of the few, the proud, the National Honor Society. NHS MEMBERS: A. Villella, M. Malecha, J. Wielinski, N. NOT PICTURED: M. Selim, B. VVeides CHORUS Hush! ... Do I hear angels’ voices in the 400 hall? Not exactly, but the chorus members surely give it their best shot. Serenading us with their lovely voices under the guidance of Ms. Antonich, the chorus is a fine member of the Regina family. EVENTS grandparent' day The profiles of a teenager’s face and that of a grandparent have similar smiles as they share a day of celebrating a liturgy and a continental breakfast. Grandparents’ Day is looked forward to by all and is always an enjoyable success. 1. Nancy and Mary Jo Habermaier have different reactions to their breakfast hut not their Grandparents! 2. Karen Kohler and grandmother enjoy the day together. 3. Margaret Byrne can always lean on her grandfather. 44 It Takes All Of Us Working Together Each year the Regina Parents’ Club adds not only financial assistance to our school but are ever present and supportive of many activities. Back to School Night, Eighth Grade Open House, Grandparents’ Day, Marathon, Dinner Theater and Daddy-Daughter Dinner Dance are some of the “really” special events of Parents Club participation. Mothers staffing our Nurses’ room and various health testing are also assisted as well as tally and money counting for the magazine and marathon drives. For all this and more we say, THANKS A MILLION. daddy daughter dinner dance Dr. Richard Bendel, Jim Krezowski, Paul Kennedy and Tom Lynch Jean Flaherty and date. Excitement filled the air on January 31st, as couples arrived at Regina for the annual Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance: an evening of dining, twirling and twisting to the music of “Sunny”. The band played a variety of music that seemed to suit everyones tastes, and if there were a few favorites that were missed, requests were taken. All in all, a good time was had by everyone. Helpers Jean Shapiro and Maxine Steigauf. Alternative Christmas Alternative Christmas has always been a successful tradition at Regina. This year there was still a special meaning, but the activities were changed. Each homeroom had its own fundraiser for a pro-life project and helped to contribute $500 to the project. During the course of the day, there were games and refreshments arranged by Cathy Engel and the Student Council. After that, the Traditional Regina show was put on, with each class doing skits for entertainment. One can most certainly say that Regina had a lot of holiday spirit. 48 High School Bowl This year Regina lost to Minnetonka in the High School Bowl with flying colors. Buzzer-happy Jeanine buzzed before the questions finished and Suzanne was buzzer-shy. Mary liked to buzz unrecognized and the excitement left Glynis speechless. So, “for 10 points, which High School Bowl team made the most mistakes during a broadcast?” No comment. Mock Trial Encore! Encore for the Social Problems class of 1982! This was Regina’s second victorious year in the annual Mock Trial Competition held at Hamline University. Sr. Joan’s and Kathy Snyder’s (a Hamline law student) help made it all possible. 1. The liturgies, which are somewhat informal, hold a lot of special meaning for the students. Liturgies 1. Father Boh White. 2. Father Patrick Lannon. 3. Father Steve LaCanne. 4. This ceramic chalice was donated to Regina by the Parents’ Club. 5. Musicians and singers for some of Regina’s Masses- Mary Bendel. Molly Delaney, Anne Hergott, Nicki Mashek, and Karen Blomgren. 6. Our Lil Abner and Daisy Mae were Liz Hamel and John Nichols. Something new this year was “the best dressed couple contest” won by Liz Pumper and her date. 1. Marry’n Sam had a busy night. 2. Shannon Dolan and Molly McGowan enjoyed their dates. 3. Bibbs Logelin and her date sit out this dance. 4. This year, there was only a varsity volleyball team at Regina which started fresh with a new coach, Yvette Witucki, and many new players. They were a hardworking team and played many close games. They even won a game. Regina anticipates another great volleyball team to be “served” up next year. Bottom: M. Malecha, 1. McGowan, M. Romaniack, L. Pumper. C. Cotta. Middle: Co-captain C. Dolan, P. A highlight of the season was an overnight trip to St. Cloud where the Raiders scrimmaged the number one team and other top teams in the stale as well. The hotel’s name fitted the team it lodged. Prime Rate! Coach Dave Hovinen’s analogy proved true; when the sticks were on the court, there was no denying the solid unity there. Inspired by strong leadership from captains Michelle Hamel and Margaret Johnson, the team gave everything in every game win or lose.
