REGINA HIGH SCHOOL 1 2 The pioneer cry was “Go West!” but we moved a few blocks east. We left behind an outwardly drab, ancient, two-story brick building surrounded by a wire fence which had stopped many balls from escaping the “field” during soccer games . . . 3 Departing from this old school, we left behind as well, wide halls, creaky staircases and radiators, large sunny windows, a fire escape, a combination lunchroom-study hall through which traipsed all the giggling, panting gym classes, a tiny library, a crackerbox-sized auditorium with a stage that once saw unbelievable mythology skits and Saint Patrick’s Day programs, and, of course, the candy store at the corner. Entering the new building, we quickly adapted to the new environment — to midget lockers, two-block hikes between classes, a public-address system, candy machines, two stages, an office for the custodian, official study halls, electric eraser-cleaners, and a classroom for every teacher. We arc “THE END OF THE BEGINNING” of Regina High School. We are the last of the pioneers to have “lived” at the old school on Wentworth Avenue. Indeed, we were pioneers “roughing it” in a school built to accommodate about half the girls enrolled at Regina. We rather enjoyed the inconveniences — study hall at the crowded collapsible cafeteria tables, chorus practice on the steps, religion class in the typing room, gym uniforms stashed in hall lockers, the principal’s office so near everything, geometry in the biology room amidst frogs, chickens, and mice. Graduating from high school also marks THE END OF THE BEGINNING” of our way on the road to maturity, to womanhood. We now leave this formative, or beginning period of our lives to venture to other frontiers. This is the point at which each girl feels responsible for deciding what she will do with the edu- cation of twelve years. Yes, it is the end of a beginning we are privileged to have been a part of — the building of Regina High School — not as much creators of this physical plant as creators of a spirit that marks Regina as a dynamic gathering of loving persons. We step now from such a vital unity towards the beginning of a new life. For most of us there will be college educations; for others full-time jobs or marriage or religious life. We never like to sec the end come for something that has lasted four long years and, in spite of its length and challenge, has been fun. But we graduates must remember, it’s only the end of a beginning and not the beginning of the end! MARY MARGARET COLLINS JC-CA 2. 3 G.A.A. For weeks after her death, this name was repeated over radio and television and was printed in the newspapers, hut whut was Mary really like? Those of us who knew her remember Mary as a girl who loved to laugh. She possessed an exuberance and optimism for living which only some of the young seem to have. We remember her pretty face with its arched eyebrows and thick eyelashes. A navy-blue skirt and sweater, with loafers, were classic examples of her casual dress. Like us she loved basketball games, dances, parties, and ''Puff the Magic Dragon. Besides her love for what the world offered, Mary also loved her God. The evening of her death she went first to Mass, and then to her babysitting job. Later that evening. when death came to her. she once again turned to Him. crying out. Oh my God. help me . As we graduate we find that Mary Bell, through the Communion of Saints, is with us in spirit, still a member of the class of 1965. May she rest in peace. Juntos, THE END OF THE Dear Graduates of the Class of 1965, Congratulations to each one of you as you leave Regina High School with a hard-earned diploma which marks you as ready to begin a first phase in young adult living. Every year seniors will graduate from this school, but no two classes are just alike because each year, no matter how large our student body may seem to be — at 1,000 or 1,100 or 1,200 — unique individuals take their diplomas, prepared after four years’ training with an appetite for further learning, with the ability to learn, we hope, from their future circumstances in the college and work worlds, and from every experience life may provide for their response as persons. Many of you have already decided what your lifcwork will be and are going on from Regina to higher education, both liberal and specialized, to majors in the humanities, teaching, nursing, and business. Your class is blessed too with girls who are willing to accept God’s gift to them of a religious vocation. All of you are BECOMING during these years, during the four just ending, in which you “pioneered” with the two groups ahead of you as the “End of the Beginning” class, and during the years ahead, in which you can find, every day, ways to be mature, true, deep, womanly, by the kind of response you choose to make in every situation. May you only grow into the persons you have shown the promise of becoming since those first days, on Wentworth, when your limitless cooperation endeared you to a faculty that follows you now with their prayers and lasting interest.
