M......;.-4..-.w . .. huw. Mu... sz 5 964 ANCILE SINCE THE YEAR 01: 1T5 CONCEPTION, 1929, Regimfs Yearbook has been called the Regina ANCILE. Many have questioned why we use this title amt we of the 1964 ANCILE staff feel that we should give the xfmt'elzts a clearer understanding of its Iizeaning. During the reign of Nmmz, an ancient Roman I'u'Izg, there fell 'from heaven a great shield, which all the people thought belonged to Mars, the god of war. The Romans believed that the prosperity of their eity depended on this shield; therefore, they protected it with their lives. In. order to prevent the theft of the shield, eleven facsimiles of the ANe CILE, as it was called, were nmde 30 that a thief could not distinguish the original among 50 many. The twelve shields were placed in the temple of Mars where the priests constantly watched them. just as the mzeienf Romain jealously guarded their ANCILE, we Regimens should treasure all that we have acquired as students at this sehool-the experiences, the friends, the knowledge, and the increased love of our religion. These are the very things we have tried to express in our 1964 ANCILE. We hope that all Regilzians will guard and Cherish them. REGINA HIGH SCHOOL NORWOOD, OHIO CONTENTS Dedication Administration Dawn Mid-morning N 00151 Mid-afternoon Dusk 28 56 92 126 .st , Mx..l.. THROUGH THE HALLOWED HALLS of Regina High School have passed many people, both young and old. Yet none seems so deserving of men- tion or praise right now as our own dear Sister Mary John. Chosen as Regimfs missionary for the 1963-64 school year, Sister has been stationed in Chile for seven years now. Armed With faith and courage, Sister, along with three of her compatriots, arrived in Santiago in 1.957 With the following orders: U to teach in St. Gaspafs, a boys, school directed by the Fathers of the Precious Blood in Chile, and 2y I to begin a convent for native sisters. Sister then set out to conquer the hearts and the souls of the Chilean population. Her weapons included patience, love, understanding, hope, and an ever-present and unwavering faith. The obstacles Which threatened to overcome her were many and varied, but Christ was the Victor. Through the ceaseless and untiring efforts of Sister Mary John and her companions, the Mystical Body of Christ has gained many members. For these reasons, it is With great pride and pleasure that to you, Sister Mary John, we dedicate this edition of the 1964 ANCILE. For you have created a sunrise in the lives of many thousands of people. -, You have filled their hearts and minds With the knowledge of GocPs truths and given them a chance to participate fruitfully in the Mystical Body of Christ, so that when their sunset comes they may return to God, whence they came. , '99 'A'FK 3311 y , ARCHBISHOP KARI, J. ALTER Assisting the Archbishop in many and varied ways, Auxiliary Bishop Lcibold in his role of Vicar-gencral serves as the bulwark 0f the Arch- diocese. He is the Vice Chairman of the School Board and administrator for the Archbishop. The bishop confers minor and major orders of the subdeaconam and deaconate :md consecrates priests to non-Llioccsan orders. His chief contact with the people of the Archdiocese, however, is through the administration of the sacrament of Confirmation-thc work of strengthening Catho- lics for the cvcrwincreasing role of thc laity in the church today. We of Regina wish to thank Bishop Lcibold for his untiring efforts. $ n For almost fourteen YC'JFS our Archdiocese has been lcd by :1 truly great and holy man, :1 shepherd who has watched carefully over the flock of souls cntrustcd to his care. It can honestly and proudly he said that Archbishop Alter is :1 man who has faced up to the challenges presumed by m o d c r n secular thought, and is one who will con- tinue to proclaim the truth in the face of all earthly opposition. May the Archbishop, beloved nd- vacate of social justice, continue in his thrcc-fold role of sanctificr, ruler, and teacher, aided by the prayers of his people and the grace of his God. AUXILIARY BISHOP PAUL F. Lunom Monsignor Rynn has been superintendent of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati since 1932. In this capacity, Monsignor Carries out the policies which are laid down by Lhe school board. Monsignor is well qualified for this job for he holds :1 BA. degree from the University of Dayton and cm M.A. and a Ph.D. from the Catholic University of America. But the diploma he is most proud of is the one which graces the wall behind his desk. It was awarded to him by the Fur, Fin, and Feather College Of Marcclus, Michigan, for his outstanding patience in the pur- suit of his hobby, fishing. In this Capacity she has many responsibilities, among which are organiza- tion and dircctiun of school activities and various other business matters. Since 1961, Sister Ircnuca has been the active head of this busy school. But to the students IO under her, she is more than just a school officinry; she is a religious sister, :1 member of the order of the Sisters of the Precious Blood Her sincere int tcrcst in the welfare of the students is reflected in her words of advice and Counsel to us on how we should conduct ourselves as young Catholic ladies. WC Reginians are fortunate to have suCh :1 dedicated principal. Sisnii MARY CAROL CPRS. SESTIm MARY MARTHA, C.PP.S,, has been Reginays able guidance directress for five years. As guid- nncc'dircctruss, Sister helps the individual stu- dents plan their high school curriculum according to their abilities and goals. Sister Martha is always available to listen to any Reginiaifs problems, whether personal or academic, and she is always ready with understanding and helpful advice. When :1 Regina student is finally ready to make the break from high school, Sister Martha helps her to choose a college appropriate to her needs and means, or she licips to place other graduatcs in jobs around the city, Sister Martha has smoothed out the rough road of high school for many Reginians. Shun MARY MAIH'HA. CiPlKSi SISTER MARY CAROL, C.PP,S., ha: been our vice- principal at Regina since 1961 and a teacher hero for six years. Reginians owc Sister a debt of grati- tude for her help in assisting us in any way she Cfln. Faculty What would a school be without :1 faculty? All the books, equipment, and beautiful school buildings in the world would be of little or no consequence without the guidance and under- standing of :1 teacher. Who but 3. teacher can clarify the complicated jumble of a textbook and inspire students with a genuine hunger for learning? Throughout high school we find many friends and allies among our teachers. However, their primary purpose is to impart some of their knowledge to us. The academic excellence of Re- gina students is living proof of the teaching ability to be found within the walls of our Lady's school. The faculty, an integral part of any institute of learning, holds a special place in the hearts of all Reginians. 5mm MARY ALMA, C.PP.S., Rcligion ll, Sodality Moderator 515nm MAM AIMAKD, C.PP.S., English 11, English 111. Therefore, the task of Regina's English Department has become one of mounting importance; The English teach- ers must help us students to form correct habits with regard to the language. This involves help- ing us to think logically, speak intelligently, and write correctly. In order that we might accom- plish these goals the teachers employ the several 32 different tools of English, which include reading, literature, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, compo- sition, speech, and drama. English is oncls aid to intelligent communica- Eion, and without the efforts of the department to help us in mastering our language we would be greatly handicapped in all other facets of our academic and social life. In their endeavor toward helping these children to under- stand the faith, the girls use visual aids such as pictures, gestures, and magazines. Records and simple songs are used as audio aids. Class every Saturday begins and ends with a prayer and .1 song. A visit to chapel is always included in the schedulel The visit helps the chil- dren acquire the reverent and devout attitude expected of them in Church. The study of languages is an important aspect in the cultural life of every Reginian. Through- out her long history Regina has focused her attention on the Romance hmguages of Latin, French, and Spanish. Four-ycur courses in each of these are offered to those of us who would like to meet the chain lengc of learning a new tongue as well as studying the culture, customs, and the life of the people Who speak it. Whith the aid of tape recorders we can practice our accents and further master pronunciation by listening to ourselves and others speaking the language. The study of the various cultures enables one to travel the intriguing 'Appian Way of Rome, explore a dashing French rendezvous, or ramble through warm, friendly, Spanish lands. CSMC A missionaryis work is never finished. There are always Challenges to meet, obstacles to over- come, and souls to win. To face up to these tasks ceumgcously, a missionary needs our help. With this in mind, the Regina. Apostolorum Unit of the Catholic Studenfs Mission Crusade aims to in- crease interest in thc Churchis role as a mission npostolatc. In previous years each homeroom has had its own missionary to support both spiritually and financially, through prayers, sacrifices, and indi- vidual offerings. This year, hewever7 we have chosen to promote the idea. of unity through one missionary, backed by the entire student body. Mary .Iu Hmecrry Hliru-Pruaidcmi. Sun Griswold UhresideJHD. are the C.S.M.C. officers. We can help our distant brethren Who are searching for the Light. This year's choice is Sister Mary John, C.PP.S. Each homeroom has taken it upon itself to raise money for one item most needed by Sister. Finan- cial support was obtained through the Mission Post Office before Christmas, a system devised whereby each Christmas package and each card distributed at school had to be sent through the post office and stamped with 1iangel sear, before delivery Could be made. No one but you, the Queenf Teens? could de- mand such a worthwhile yearbook. We tried to oblige. It was you, Regina students, who cheered the staff on to success. We attempted to capture your llmoments to remember and put them together so that you will have them to cherish for your lifetime. If you feel that a commendable job has been done, then please congratulate the staff members whOSe signatures appear on this page. They worked so hard to please. I want to take this opportunity to say a sin- cere THANK YOU to the parents of the staff members. You were so patient and considerate in permitting your girls to spend so much time ANCILE tdimr Elaine Becket at Regina in order that we might complete the book on time. Because the ANCILE is entirely exuacurricular, staying after school late was the rule, not the exception. No one could have been more willing and able to lend a helping hand than our moderator, Sister Virgila. Our deepest and most sincere THANK YOU goes to her. At the beginning of the year, I decided that the best way for me to be remembered as the editor of the ANCILE was to have a book that was either round or paperback. Up0n glancing over the pages, Ilve discovered that according to my standards, I will not be remembered. How- ever, I sincerely hope that your memories are re- membered. So, itls all yours.
