T hmugh all the yeameof wair and 0f peace-this Heavenly Queen has given the students a feeling of inner peace and well being. Every true Regtntan, from the fimt graduating class to the present, has dedicated her work, her study, her recreation to this Blessed M othe'r. Each one of the twenty-fiee years has seen a class well-fitted to take its place in the world. Every one of the students was prepared to follow her particular vocation. Some have followed 0m Lordts call to the religious ltfe, others have patterned M wry tn rearing a family, while still others have found happiness in the work only a single life makes possible. M ay the Regina Anette of 1953 serve as a remainder of the years gone by--a reminder of the debt of gratitude we owe our H eavenly Queen for all her blessings and guidance through the years. M ary, Queen of Heaven, help us during these next twenty-five years as you have in the past. H elp us, likewise, always to remember your guid- ance and follow it the rest of our lives. 7796' Qedmtz'on With the termination of this school year Regina High School will have graduated twenty-Jive classes. Over 2000 girls will have taken their places in the world. While it is always a dijicult task to adjust to this adult world, Regina has faithfully equipped her students to meet that challenge. She has edu- cated her girls spiritually, mentally, and physically to rise to the heights of Christian leadership in whatever vocations they may have chosen. It is with that thought in mind that we, the Silver Jubilee Class of 1953, wish to dedicate this special yearbook to the many ttQueenis Teens,5 who have passed through the portals of Regina High School in the past 25 years. These two Mothers, members of Regina's first Graduating Class, enjoy the unique honor of having daughters in Regimfs Silver Jubilee Graduating Class. 39 OUR PA T R ONES -RE GINA C OELI Hgmy OFREGINA 1928-1953 The doors of Regina High School were first opened to students on October 11, 1928. On that day, the nine girls, now called the Regina Nine? coming from various high schoois of the eitye St. Diary, St. George, Notre Dame, and Norwood High-met in our yet incompleted structure to form the first senior and graduating class of this newly organized school. Archbishop McNicholas, of beloved memory, had made known the urgent need for a. girls, new high school, and with the opening of Regina the desire of His Grace was realized. The dedication took place on November 25, 1928, the hlost Reverend Archbishop ofliciating. Another impressive ceremony, the unveiling of the beautiful statue of Our Lady, REGINA COELI, the Patroness of Regina, took place on March 9, 1929. It was on this date that our Heavenly Queen was placed in the niche at the entrance in the corridor, a revered position Which she still occupies today. In that iirst memorable year the Faculty of Regina numbered sixteen: two priests, ten sisters and four lay teachers. The student body consisted of two hundred fifteen girls, the majority of whom were enrolled as freshmen and sophomores. The junior class numbered thirty-two, While the seniors, as mentioned above, numbered nine. Interesting, too, is the study of the curriculum t offered during those iirst years. While it was ade- quate for the time, the subjects were of necessity limited because of the small number of teachers. As the Sisters of the Precious Blood, the alum- nae and friends of Regina look back these twenty- five years, they can readily perceive that our high school has grown in leaps and bounds. This of necessity has entailed much transformation and many changes along the way. There are remem- 41 brances of the graduation exercises taking place first at the thsic Hall, then followed by a transfer to Xavier Fieldhause, and finally, in 1951, in our own beautiful auditorium at Regina. Because of the increased enrollment from two hundred fifteen to approximately six hundred girls, the faculty today numbers thirty as com- pared with sixteen during the first years. Our curriculum, too, has undergone a tremen- dous Change. In recent years the students have been offered a wide choice of studies. They make their selection only after having received guidance and counsel along the way. There is a definite testing program administered in the spring of the year to the prospective freshmen. The results of these tests help to determine the capabilities and talents of the individual student and are a guide in working out the program best fitted for each student. Over the span of these twenty-five years various improvements in the furnishing and the physical makeup of the building have transformed Re- ginais appearance. Some of the outstanding ones will be depicted in the section following. After noting all these various changes, however, we iind that there is one important phase of our Alma Materis educational plan that happily has not changed during these twentyeiive yearSwthe cultivation of a hlial devotion to Diary our Heav- enly Mother. We, the students of the twenty-hfth graduating class, as Well as these 0f Reginfs every graduating class, have dedicated ourselves to Mary. With a deep conviction of the necessity of de- votion to our Blessed Lady, and With hrm conn- dence in Regimis motto, ttFilia hiariae non Peribit, we wish ever to remain the loving chil- dren of our REGINA Comm. n L L D D r: m A J. REVEREND MOTHER MARY NATIIALIA, C .PP.S. Mother General of 1110 Sisfm of tile Precious Blood 46 COMMUNYT Y OF THE 515T ERS OF T HE PRECIOU5 BLOOD Since the opening of Regina, the school has been staffed by the Sisters of the Precious Blood. The origin of this Community dates back to the time of Pope Pius VII, in the year 1832. At this time an elderly and saintly widow, the mother of six children, was inspired to dedicate her life to the honor 0f the Precious Blood. For this purpose she gathered about her in Loewenberg, Switzerland, several devout young girls, who pledged themselves to keep Vigil be- fore the Blessed Sacrament through the day and the night. Soon the number of volunteers increased and a religious community was organized. Be- sides adoring the Precious Blood in the Blessed Sacrament, these Sisters devoted themselves to the education of youth, and to the care of orphans and homeless girls. In 1836, God willed that the work of hlother Brunner be at an end. After much severe but pa- tient suffering, the Pious Mother, as she was called, went to her eternal reward. From far and near people fiocked to view her remains, for all revered her as a saint. As in life she had been a devout adorer of the Blessed Sacrament, so now in death God designed that she be buried in a crypt in the sanctuary of St. Diary at Sagens, Switzer- landea rare privilege. A few years after the death of 310ther Brunner, her priestly son, the Reverend Francis deSales Brunner, a member of the Society of the Priests 0f the Precious Blood, was sent to America to es- tablish his congregation there. Realizing the ur- gent need for Sisters in America, he encouraged the Sisters of Loewenberg to take up their work for the salvation of souls here. Three Sisters ac- cepted the challenge and proceeded to this coun- try to teach the children in a section of northern Ohio. 4'7 The Community grew rapidly, and within a. decade ten convents were established, in each of which perpetual adoration 0f the Blessed Sacra- ment was introduced. As the number increased, it was necessary to transfer the Blotherhouse from New Riegal, the first establishment, to Maria Stein, Ohio. Due to political disturbances at this time, the Sisters of Loewenberg, upon advice of Father Brunner, and With the sanction of Archbishop Purcell of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, came to America to join the other Sisters in northern Ohio. After 1890 a notable expansion of the Com- munity took place. Missions were established out- side of Ohio in the states of Virginia, Indiana, Missouri, Colorado, Arizona and California. These have become scenes of the Sisters5 activi- ties in schools, orphanages, seminaries and other institutions. In 1923 the Motherhouse was removed to Regina Heights in Dayton, Ohio. Here the Community enjoys the supreme privi- lege of perpetual exposition of the Blessed Sacra- ment. In 1934, during the Centenary celebration of the Community, the remains of the Mother Foundress were exhumed in Switzerland and brought to the Motherhouse. Here in 3 Chapel they have been enshrined and are now exposed for veneration. Her folded bands, which were found intact upon exhumation, are now an in- spiration for all who visit the shrine. Many cures have been effected and numerous favors obtained through the intercession of this Pious hlother. It was shortly after its Centenary celebration that the Community of the Sisters of the Precious Blood was recognized by Rome as a Papal Insti- tution. Its membership today is approximately seven hundred, and its missions number seventy- five. The present Mother General is the Reverend Mother Mary Nathalie. SISTER MARY GRACE, G.PPS.
