SENIOR OFFICERS GERTRUDE REARDON HELEN FLAHERTY MARJORIE FARJ-SlNU A NNA MA R l E LAMM ER'I' ottiitozy of tag Cfam o 7940 September 10, l936e0ur first day of high school! The first great event of our Freshman year was the initiation of our classmates; one hundred green Freshies. 0111 that terrible ordeal. XVI: felt quite important when the time came to elect our class officers. In October we had the privilege to see and hear the Papal Secretary of' State, Cardinal Pacclli, our present Holy Fa ther Pius XII as he stand on the balcony of St. rWary Seminary just opposite our campus. November brought the baskethall-wa game that helped us to show our sports- manship. The Thanksgiving entertainment, State Tests, Lady of the Lake, the Christmas party, the Senior Class Play were all memorable events of 1956. In January we had our first retreat under the direction of' Father Lily, SJ. An unexpected two weeks' vacation was granted us because of the Hood Of 1937, the worst Cincinnati ever experienced. HLights Out for a week! Anne Osterday walked away with many Hobby Fair awards during Girls, Week. The local conference of the C. S. Ni. C. held its meeting in our auditorium. ,Twas said that the Freshman Skating Party went over with a hang. The Freshmen were called good kidsnithey gave the Seniors a lovely farewell party. Golden September 01' 1957 saw us back to school again with a new vigor and new ambition. We were Sophomores. XVe defeated the Juniors in the Pam: fu'cnly-lu'o volleyball games that were scheduled for October, Several movies took the girls to our National Parks and to London through the immortalized HChrist- mas Cami. Christmas vacation came, then more studies; semi-annual exams. and retreat by Father Columban Kramer whom we liked very much. A HHard Time Partyt' tor the benefit of the missions was held in Belarch; we entertained the Senims with a prograln in May. 0n Slay Day we took part in the annual procession around the schnol grounds to our Lady's Grotto. and the crowning of our Queen. Then a XX'CH-earned vacation. As t'uil-Hedged Juniors the Class of '40 returned to Regina in September, 1958. We thought we were just a little brighter and more polished than before. The first skating party we sponsored in September at the Norwood Roller Rink. Some of the Iuninrs were chosen as members oti the Beacon Staff. The ctass rings were the topic of conversation for many weeks. In October, Ohio celebrated the 1:30th anniversary of the signing of the Northwest Ordi- nance. Greater Cincinnati had a pageant and parade. Some of us participated in bath XVI: listened in to the funeral services of Pope Pius XI, a broadcast from St. PCtCIJS Cathedral at Rome. Some of our talented classmates pre- sented a play, A Dance Rehearsal, fur the mothers of the Parent-Teacher Association, The highiights of this year were the Tea Dance and the Prom. chat delights these two social events held for mere Iuninrst We did well, both in mission activities and in the field of sports. A Junior was elected captain of our basketball team. Our Christmas party was a huge success. At last our dream of dreams came trueiwe were Seniors! After duly initiating the Freshies, we were swept into a current of activity. The year was one of great conventions in Cincinnati. Blustery October and brooding November saw us hurrying about the City to attend the interesting sessions ottirst the Cathulic Youth Organization and later the Contraternity of Christian Doctrine Conventions. Before we knew it Christmas was in the air, and the Juniors were outdning themselves with their rendition of Kay Kayser's pro- gram. Father Oberhauser conducted the retreat in January, giving us some unhn'gettahly beautiful meditations on our Blessed Dtother. February found bringing duwn the house in acknowledgement of A'L'lUFiCC Evans' brilliant portrayal of Shakespeareis 'tHamletf' at the Taft. A few weeks later we were tmdding the boards ourselves when we presented our class play The American Girl. XVith the able assistance 01' the underclassmen we captured the prize for having the most points in the Hobby Fair. Our Glee Club participated in the singing of the A'tass. celebrated at the CIUSC of Girls' XVeel-E in the old Cathedral. Through the dt'izzling min of April came the postman with two lovely, silver trophies and plaques, which our typists had won in the National Catholic Typistsl Association. XVith merciless swit'tness Blay descended upon us, and with it came the hatt-sorrowful prospect of graduation. The month ended in a haze of crowded events, climaxed hy the Crowning of our Lady by our class president, and our farewell party to the underctassmen. Class Night found us weeping bidders 0t fond farewells to faculty, Classmates, and our beloved Alma htziter. THE STAFF. 1 :va lwvnbx-Hm'r m: A my ggs Beauty of Like a gleaming jewel nestled in the folds of a rich green velvet, our Alma Nlater sits h enthroned 0n Norwood's highest hill and com- h mands a view of the surrounding countryside. Her beauty as she rests, bathed in the liquid gold of the sun-hathed mount, is the cynosure of eyes for miles, in every direction. But if she is impressive in perspective, how much more inspiring is Regina at Close range. About her in the summer stands a silent court of verdant-garbed knights: the mighty oaks, the towering elms, the stately poplars, and the fullnbosomed maples, whose leafy crowns are studded with multiecolored songsters. At her feet the Howers burst in bloom and incense her loveliness with their perfume The winter scene has a charm all its own. h erapped in flowing ermine robes, our Alma e Mater sits in the midst of a fairyland of fan- tastically beautiful ice-wrought nymphs and sparkling evergreens. mates thing:r 0am c74fma Mata To this setting of breathless loveliness come hundreds of young girls annually to find that Reginais exterior is hut the reflection of a greater inner beauty, namely, the spirit of Godliness, which is the soul at the institution. When we saw Helen Jo Schoenberger, she was so worn out after rushing to the docks to catch a last glimpse of her sea-going husband, Captain of the U. S. S. Colorado, that she scarcely recognized us. The last stop on our journey was Hollywood. There we settled down to read the New York Herald. In VVinchele column we read that Gerry Hanson recently startled the elite at the Vy'aldort Astoria with her latest evening creation. If he is a camera enthusiast, he will. doubtless, whip out a small black machine and without further ado proceed to snap a picture of the scene. Here we have a few of the shotsl, that any camera lover would prize. The first Hoar 0f the school is a verit- able goidmine of camera loot. In the left wing of the building is the eiiicient-looking Commercial Department, where alert busi- ild 75515 mess pupils busy themselves over book- keeping or send their fingers flying over the keys of a typewriter. Halfway down the red tile corridor of the first; ttoor and across the quiet thresh- hold is a very different type of picture. Serene. peaceful, refreshing, with the gleam of polished gold and the red flicker of the Sanctuary lamp the chapel is in definite contrast to the industrious bustle 0t the typewriting mom. Past the smiling statue of our Lady and far to the end oi: the hall, there is another interesting series of moms. First tC'nr:limraz' m1 llzutfnflau'r'nlri pngmj ilitNt u . .m.mr aim ' 3 1 ' .J- in order of approach is the Domestic Art room, beautifully decorated, and often- times adorned by the fine handiwork of the pupils. Every Friday, a corner of this sunny room is transformed into a miniature hospital as a special Class of seniors, under the guidance of .Mrs. Van Cleve, a Red Cross Nurse, learns about Home Nursing. Next door in the spotless Domestic Science department, tomorrow's hostesses learn to practice the culinary art with deft skill. Occasionally they, too, display their art as gracious hostesses in the lovely model dining room. Up two flights of stairs, still in the right wing of the building is the Well- gamifia'z ?facai H equipped chemical laboratory, with all the fascination a scientific chamber cam otter. Halfway down the shining length of the third floor corridor is the Art Room, where bright heads incline eagerly and youthful hands put finishing touches on some neat sketch 0r colorful drawing. Leaving the mom of young artists and descending by way at the north stairway to the second floor, one will be drawn to an open doorway, and with- out hesitation will enter the lmoh-lined, quiet room which is Reginals library. As one pauses 0n the landing of the middle stairway, he catches the glimpse of an impressive scene in the courtyard below, where an image of our Lady is sheltered in a vine-Covercd grotto. Turning from the tranquil beauty of the vision, he is drawn by the sound of music through a doorway into the music department, a row of small but very attractive music moms. Indeed, whether he does so with a camera or merely with his mind's eye, the observer whu records the attractive scenes in Regina will find them pleasant and must intriguing. IRENE MASCIOLI. 04ftaz gown 5am The author's essay appeared in the April, 1940 issue of lee xlpwlfc qf .Halzy. a magazine published Ivy the Society Of Nlmy of Dayton, Ohio. XVhen I ascended the steps of my Alma BIater for the first time, I felt that somehow the whole world must he. watching me with admiring eyes. I was no longer an nhscure child; I was a young lady, and wonder of wonders, a high school student. A Sudden thrill of joy flashed through me as I stood before a statue of our Lady holding the Int'ant and smiiing, I was sure. directly at me. If there were any shadows of awed tear hovering in my mind, they were dispersed immediately when I gazed upon the gentle countenance of that loving image, for I knew that she would he as constant as my mother in watching over me. In a retrospective glance I realize that that smile on the Virgilfs lips has been ever before me in the four years that have passed since that first day. I dare not think how void those years would have been wcrc she not- there to smile wGond morning, dear child, to me everyday. When I was in trouble by doubt or worry, I I'Ied to her arms as instinctively as a babe runs to receive his mothesz kiss when he has been hurt. As I knelt under her compassionate gaze, the story of my woe I poured out to her, and with perfect confidence in her kindness I begged her assistance and never departed without it. I have visited non-Catholic schools and have experienced an inexpressible feeling of pity for the thousands of her sons and daughters denied the thrill of their heavenly Motherts presence in their school. But it the image of our Lady was such a comfort, our lovely little chapel was ten times over a joy to me, for here was not simpIy an image, but the real, living presence of God Himself! T0 imagine the past four years without that peaceful haven would be as distasteful as to consider eating salt with- out meat. Before I entered high school, God was to me a divine Being whom I was to serve, obey, and adore Being good consisted in fulfilling these obligations well. Today after four years of careful religious instruction, I realize that God is more than a divine Being to he adored from afar. He is my Father, a most loving and lovable Father, whom I must have with me when I work or when I play, when I sing or when I dance, as well as when I kneel in prayer. Page jorIy-lu'n ..u. uTgr .10 He is an intimate Friend, not an exacting 3Iaster. XVhere I go, He belongs, and if He does not III: into a certain atmosphere, neither do I. Another topic which was a source of much bewilderment to me in grade school aml which has been Clearly defined antl explained to me in high school has to do with the divine command to love my neighbor as myself. I remember especially my contusion when my elementary school teacher taught that I must love my enemy as much as my friend. With childish disbelief I doubted that Goal could he so cruel as to wish that I should love AIary Iane, who pulled my hair, as much as Betty Lou, who always gave me half of her apple. Now since I have studied that most Gotlelike of mysteries, namely, the hlystical Body of Christ, my tormer incretlulity has vanished. What I would not ClO before I will do now. because I realize that even though my neighbor may he unkind to me, I must love him because he is a member of the same AVIystical Body of Christ of which I am a memher antl that together we share a common Head. Christ HilnSellI. An understanding of this heautit'ul mystery is in itself one of the richest fruits of my high school education, for it has exerted the greatest influence upon Iny attitude towards my fellow students, and it will, I believe, exert a similar intluence in my attitude towards my fellow Citizens. DIy neighbor is no longer a separate heinibr who need he of concern to me; who may suffer or he happy without any worry on my part. He is my brother in Christ; he has a Claim to all the natural rights I enjoy; aml when he gutters, I must be con- ceived with the problem of alleviating his pain. AIy most valuable lessons in active participation in the DIystical Body of Christ have been taught me by the Catholic Students' Mission Crusade, an organization which daily spends tireless efforts for members, distant and near, oli Christ's Alystical Body. I am happy to have been ahle to share in the splendid work done by this association of mission-minded youths in return for the unique influence it has been throughout my high school career. Its three- fold exhortatinn to prayer, work, antl Sacrifice have been so ingrained in my heart that they have hecmne a part of me. I am convinced that for actual exemplilication of the work which Christ advocated when He saitl HLove one another, there is no single group which has clone more than the Catholic Stutlents' .Wission Crusade has tlone tor me during the Mist lhur years. .. I i However, I tlU not wish to create the impression that religion was the only suhiect in which I was well instructed, for the secular branches ol' stucly Paws .lin'hlsilln'v were also an important factor in my high school training. The study of Ian- guages, mathematics, science, history oFfered me every opportunity to acquire a well-rounded education. In my history and Civics Classes I have arrived at a fuller understanding and appreciation of the principles of democracy. Im- mortal Latin and English classics have been included in my program. Doors to a score of chambers of learning, in fact, were ever ready to swing open it I but turned the knob. But getting away from the serious side of the story, may I say that I have never had such a quantity of good, clean fun as I have had in high school. The social gatherings of CathoIiC youth Sponsored by the School, the Parent- Teacher Association, 01' one ot the Classes have ever been a delight to me, for they were effervescent with youthful mirth and gaiety. There was an unique feeling of good fellowship permeating the atmosphere, and there was a special type of joy arising from the knowledge that my good times were as pure as morning dew. Under the approving eyes of my elders, I have found an unsur- passed pleasure in every dance, every tea, every game that I have attended. Aware, as I am, that the years of adolescence are the most turhuIent years of a lifetime, I feel that I owe immeasurable thanks to God, my parents, and my teachers who have so wiser and so lovingly guided me through this trying period. To begin the year in the right spirit, a sulemn initiation of its members was held in October. At this event Reverend Arnold lvVitzman, the moderator of the local unit was present and delivered an inspiring address which spurred us on to fulfill the threefold purpose of the mission crusade, viz., prayer, study, and saCrifice. Each day of the month we prayed for the mission intention. W'e made numerous novenas and triduums throughout the year in behalf of the missions. A new method was developed by which our Spiritual Treasury was greatly enlarged. Various study clubs were organized. Some girls made a zealous study of the deeds of the missions and the excellent work that the missionaries are doing; others took lessons in Christian Doctrine 30 that they would be able to prepare small Children for their First Holy Communion. iVlission talks and plays were also given at the monthly meetings. Included in the mission activities were many drives which were sponsored to aid the missions. There were drives for old Clothes, tinfoil, stamps, sales tax stamps, and for the collection and distribution of Catholic literature. Donations were sent to the missionaries all over the country. Our unit also entered the C. S. M. C. Oratorical Contest. At the elimina- tions held at our school Diary Burns was unanimously Chosen by the judges to represent Regina in the semi-final contest held at Roger Bacon High School. Competing with four other schools, Nlary proved successful at the semi-finals and received first honors; in the finals, second honors.
