The Commodore's Pennant was sh1ftedtO nine different ships, both Within the Squadron and in units deployed from EASTPAC and the Atlantic Fleet. The ships' in which COMDESRON NINE was embarked included the Squadr0I1 flagship, USS REEVES QDLG-245, USS WARRINGTON QDD-8435, USS DAHLGREN-KDLG-l2l, Uss DE HAVEN QDD-7271, Uss W. V. PRATT QDLG-13y, Uss KEARSARGE QCVS-331, USS R- E. EDWARDS 1DD-950J, Uss BELKNAP QDLG-265, Uss BLUE QDD-7445, and Uss HULL KDD' 9453. The operational commitments met by COMDESRON NINE were as varied as the ships In which he was embarked. Assignments included Screen Commander for USS ENTERPRISE KCVAN-651, USS KITTY HAWK QCVA-635. USS HANCOCKKCVA-191, and USS CORAL SEA QCVA-435g North and South Search and Rescue Commanderg Commander Naval Gunfire SUP' portg and North and South Sea Dragon Commander. These assignments gave the officers and men of the Staff an opportunity to see and take part in the man as t f N al warfare being y pec s o av employed in and off Vietnam. Movements to other ships required the transfer of office files and equipment in metal boxes at sea by highline or helicopter. At times, due to lack of space on some of the smaller destroyers, it was necessary to Work out of the metal boxes and live out of seabags. However the off'cers a d f th S ' ' ' 1 n men o e taff considered the variety of assignments and challengGS 31111916 compensation for the shifting which was necessary, and thus made the tour a very rewardmg experience.
