Reedsport Union High School took its second straight boys' swimming championship on November 23, 1963 at the University of Oregon pool. By starting and finishing the meet with record-setting performances in two relays, Coach Bob Ka- wachika's swimmers came close to doubling the tally of their nearest rival, huge Woodrow Wilson High of Portland. Even though representing the smallest school in the meet, the Braves set three of five records en- route to scoring 49 points. Wilson scored 26, followed by Medford and South Eugene with 21 each and Parkrose with 20. Among the girls, Wilson High won the honors with 73 112 points, followed by Beaverton with 64. Cathy Stingley, only Reedsport girl swimmer, scored 7 points for an eighth place berth. The Braves jumped off to an early lead when their 200-yard medley relay team, consisting of Larry Riley, Steve Cary, Lynn Wall, and Bob Plov, swam to the finish ahead of the pack with a 1:50. 2 clocking. The time shattered the old mark of 1:51.4 set by another Reedsport team in 1962. In the 200-yard freestyle, John Josephson zipped to a 1:57. 4 to place second, even though his time was equal to that of the winner, Bruce Hess of Medford. In the 400 -yard freestyle, the Reedsport boys went two-three with Hugh Mackenzie picking up the second place medal in 4:16. 4. Close behind was his teammate Bob Plov with a clocking of 4:17. 5, as Ted Leovich of Lincoln won the event in 4:12. 8. fcontinued on page 391

SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR Coach Bob Kawachika Steve Cary, state champion in the 100- yard breaststroke. fcontinued from page 375 - A disqualification in the 100 -yard breaststroke gave Steve Cary a gold medal and a new state record. Steve swam the distance in 1:07. 4, second to West Linn's Skip Labsch who turned in a 1:06. 7 but was disqualified because of an illegal stroke. Cary, who won the event in 1962, broke the old record of 1:09. 0 set in 1959. The final touch to the state championship was applied by the 200-yard free relay team when they covered the distance in the record breaking time of 1:36. 5. The old record, set by South Salem in 1962, was 1:37. 4. The Reedsport quartet was John Josephson, Jerry Marks, Hugh Mackenzie, and Larry Riley. Cathy Stingley gained her 7 points for the girl team by placing third in the 50 -yard free with a 28. 2 and fourth in the 100-yard free with a 1:02. 5 clocking after not making the finals in the state contest in 1962.
