Webb High has put its stu- dents in the best hands possi- ble for shaping and molding lives--to carry on success- fully after their high school years . Day by day we are being guided through the hard and emotional period of our lives by our instructors. Each new class enters Webb with open hands waiting to receive the knowl- edge which is made available through excellent facilities and equipment. When we are no longer greenhorn underclassmen we are forming our beliefs in life and begin aiming for higher goals . Webb hands are busy working, writing homework, emphasizing points, cheering teams to victory, building floats, creating skits. These are the obvious, but the hands of Webb are also molding lives into patterns which will be ready to meet the grip of the world. Year by year in our high school careers we are reaching for the goal of graduation; but having reached the goal, we do not forget the happy times. We are proud to guard our memories and in our Gleaner we are handing to you a year of Webb High happenings . Gradually fitting into the groove of things is not hard at Webb with its friendly atmosphere, which is easily captured from the faculty and students. In our very modern building we can fashion our young lives into any cast we choose. A D M I N I S T R A T I O N A N D F A C U L T Y STANDING: W. Berning, L. C. Olson. SEATED: M. Schmitt, R. Whitty, R. Holtzmiller, R. Stone, Dr. A. Erickson, Dr. J. Tibbitts. Board of Education Few of us realize how many hours our Board of Education spends handing deci- sions to the administration which pertain to the welfare of all students, parents, and teachers. They meet twice a month to formulate school policies, select a quali- fied staff, and plan an adequate building program for our district. Bernice Moyes Secretary 6 Superintendent of Schools Dear Seniors, Your high school years have been filled with changes that stagger the imagination ... a capsule to the moon which relayed pictures back to earth; Mariner IV, which is now on its way to Mars, will reach there after you have graduated from high school; progress in the field of medicine that gives a longer life to mankind; a standard of living beyond anything even dreamed of when you were born; jet transportation which has made it commonplace, in traveling from east to west, to keep up with time. But these changes have not eliminated the grave problems that will soon be your responsi- bilities . . . conflicts between countries and ideals, conflicts within our own govern- ment, greed and selfishness. Neither a prediction of your future nor empty words of wisdom are what I want to write. I would rather urge a rededication to the basic traditions of our heritage-- The Bill of Rights of our Constitution, good practices of citizenship, the Ten Com- mandments, and to the basic ingredients of a good life--good health, a willingness to work and to assume responsibility. This community, the Board of Education, and the faculty have worked hard to give you the tools with which to build the future. Use them to the best of your ability. My very best wishes to each member of the Class of 1965, Webb High, with its numerous clubs, classes and traditions, is headed and directed by our capable assistant super- intendent Mr . Bruss . Assisting him are the guidance directors Mr. Vande Water and Mr . Leonard who are excellent counselors and problem solvers. Since regular attendance is important to a strong student body, Mr. Lee, our attendance director, has developed a new system of keeping a closer check on all absentees. The juniors have thrust their hands in almost everything this year. First there was homecoming for which they really worked hard and for which they were well rewarded this year. The juniors grabbed the most homecoming points. Class rings came and everyone was pleased at the company chosen. Juniors also planned prom and took part in loyalty and had just plain fun. They proved that the youngest class can suc- ceed in achieving high school recognition in outstanding events. Initiation was held September 25th. The Freshmen, showing great sportsmanship, went along with senior demands. When the Homecoming points were read off, the Freshmen took second place--ahead of the sophomores and seniors. Here was a task well done for an inex- perienced class. This Freshman class will be in the news at Webb High for the next three years and they will probably make headlines of high-rated achievements as they approach their graduation. Along with the different activities and parties at Webb, these Freshmen hope to also gain a handful of knowledge which will last them through- out their lives. Freshman initiation proved to be fun. This year the AFS Club spon- sored a dance, a Variety Show, and an AFS Day. Work- ing in close cooperation with the Adult AFS Committee, the high school members raised enough money to ex- tend a welcoming hand to their fourth exchange student, Feyza Vural. Feyza came to Reedsburg from Bursa, Turkey, where she had already completed her high school education. After returning to Turkey, she will continue her educa- tion in pharmacy. Her father is a military surgeon, so Feyza and her family have traveled extensively through the Middle East. Feyza has one brother, 19, and a sister, 7. In 1963, she had an American AFS sister from New York. Feyza's American parents are Superintendent and Mrs. Lawrence Olson. Her American sister is June Meyer. Feyza's year has been filled with typical teenage American activities, studying, parties, games, and public appearances--plus the round of speeches the foreign exchange student must make. 60 Scientiae Medicae ROW Is Mrs. Clauson, C. With these words the 1964-65 marching band was introduced at home football games, to the cadence of drums. The marchers, performing a flag drill during the pre-game ceremony, brought the crowd to silence as lights were dimmed and the audience's at- tention was focused on the American flag. The half-time shows included precision drills, one of which is pictured above. During the summer the 1964 marching band won first place award in the State Lion's Parade. Because of this award, the band was invited to the International Lion's Parade in Toronto, Canada. For two months our slogan was Toronto or BUST! With the help of many individuals and organizations in Reedsburg this particularly successful local group was able to compete with bands from other nations throughout the world. J- Riggert, C. LeRoy Young Dan Holtz Dan Bohen Dan Schmitt Jim Braun Steve Sussek John Harms A single loss and a single tie maned our football team's record this year. The Beavers tied Sparta and lost to Baraboo in games which the players feel could easily have been won if they had played like they did during the season's final game. The Beavers were not of enormous proportions this year; there were no Big Joes left. But what they lacked in size they compensated for in speed and agility. Besides this detriment of size, the squad was not blessed with a great deal of experience; it possessed only seven lettermen compared to last year's sixteen. The team started the season with a great deal of determination, more than it takes to survive several weeks of summer practice, and it ended with a full head of steam. We all know the reason for this, the coaching staff. Coach Holmes, Mr. Pedracine, and Mr. Jax inspired the varsity crew; Mr. Gronley instructed the B-team; and Mr. Koch, and Mr. McNaughton taught the Footbal 9-36 counter waggle pass on three. Guards get out quick and lead. Johnny make a good counter fake. Schmitty we need this one bad. Come on let's go ! Offensive Unit John Montgomery Jim Treptow Allen Stout freshmen. When the Beavers were tied by Sparta, an eighteen-game winning streak was snapped along with a great deal of pride. It is here where one would expect a team to bog down, but our squad bounded back with very decisive victories over Portage and Richland Center. They ended up carrying the coaches off the field in the final game, even though the team had not won the championship but was dead-locked in a three-way tie for second place in the South Central Conference. We all hope that the spirit and initiative of this year's team will carry over and become in- stilled in next year's players. Although a number of seniors will be lost for next season's play, there will be a more experienced team, and we hope a more successful team on the field, fighting for Webb High. The Reedsburg varsity basketball team finished tied with Mauston for second in the South Central Conference behind the highly ranked Baraboo five. Don Johannes' Beavers won 13 and lost 5 of their games. Dan Bohen, who was on the all-conference team, had 406 points, and LeRoy Young, voted honorable mention, was second in Beaver scoring with 228 points. Enthusiastic supporters watched an exciting team this year as ten of Reedsburg's games were decided by less than ten points, two of which were one and two point losses to Dells and Baraboo. Larry Pedracine's junior varsity had a record of three wins and thirteen losses.
