FOREWORD HI GIAN! In reviewing this year of 1961 - 62 with picture and by-line, we present our impression of life in a typical American high school. The student body will particu- larly remember this year as the first one in which we entertained a foreign exchange student, Gian Bellei, of Sassuolo, Italy. We hope that our impressions will always remind the Webb High students, particu- larly Gian, of many pleasant events and associates. Also, we hope that our year- book may serve in a small way as a good - will ambassador between Gian's country and ours. The Gleaner Staff 2 WE’RE GLAD TO KNOW YOU! HOPE YOU’LL LIKE US! Your church, school, and com- munity have attempted to help you envision the opportunities and pit- falls of tomorrow. Look well into the future for happiness and determi- ne now your contribution to the betterment of mankind and the world in which you live. My sincere best wishes to each member of the graduating class of 1962! LAWRENCE OLSON B. A. , M. A. ; Luther College, University of Iowa. Very truly yours, Superintendent of Schools H. Hearn, R. Dells 0 (Helland Memorial) Captain Bill Elder 74 Ricky LeMoine STARTERS Don Meeks Paul Olson It was an exciting season, complete with success, failure, elation and heartbreak. After fifteen consec- utive conference victories and two successive champ- ionships, the Beavers fell before a much improved Mauston team on the first playing date of the season. Stung by the opening game setback, the boys came back with a vengeance, defeating Viroqua, Sparta, Tomah, and Richland Center on successive weekends, before bowing again to Portage 12-7, and to a fine Baraboo team 39-0. The final game of the season brought another win--this time at the expense of Wisconsin Dells 6-0. The team developed slowly during the season and was plagued by more than the normal number of injuries. Letter winners were few and far between, a situation which should not hurt the team during the season ahead. Only one team, Richland Center, kept the Wrestlers from a per- fect duel meet season. In the Conferences and Regional Tournaments the Wrestlers placed sec- ond again because of Richland Center. The State Wrestling Tournament was a fine climax with Co-Captain Syd Daly winning the 112 pound championship and Co-Captain Tom Adelman winning a third losing only to the State Champion and the runner-up. This placed Reedsburg 5th in the State where 176 schools have wrestling teams. The loyalty program was established in 1919 by a faculty member, W. V. Arnold. The idea behind the system was to promote com- petition among the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes. Throughout the school year the classes are rated individually on various performances, such as club part- icipation, school attendance, scholarship, athletics, music participation, school support, forensics, and magazine sales. At the end of the year, climaxed by a formal banquet, the points are totaled for each class to determine the over-all winner. Responsible for the success of the program each year is the Loyalty Council. It consists of three members from each class who meet weekly to discuss student affairs and once a month to elect a good citizen.” 88 COUNCIL Jr. Rep. Secretary, R. Templin; President, B.
